Chapter 7 Enrollment
Chapter 7 Enrollment
Three months have passed in the blink of an eye.
Mr. and Mrs. Fang got up very early. After the whole family had breakfast, Mr. Fang took Fang Tian on the road to Nottingham.
Finally, just before noon, we arrived at the gate of Notting College.
"What if we run into a security guard who's asking for favors?" Fang Tian muttered to himself.
"What are you doing here?" There really was a young-looking security guard at the entrance, though it was perfectly normal for a college to have security guards at the entrance.
"Young man, I brought my child to enroll. This is my child's martial spirit certificate." Mr. Fang smiled and handed over Fang Tian's martial spirit certificate.
"Innate level four soul power, and a mutated martial soul at that, proves it can't be fake, right?" The gatekeeper looked at Fang Tian and his son and said.
"Young man, you're joking. This certificate was issued by Master Li Feng of the Spirit Hall; how could it be fake? You must be very tired receiving so many students registering at the gate every day. Here, have a cup of tea."
Fang's father used to study here, so he understood the gatekeeper's intentions perfectly well—he just wanted a bribe. Fang's father readily handed over ten copper soul coins. With the family's finances improving, Fang's father was more willing to spend money.
"Haha, sir, you're right. I've seen so many people that I'm dizzy. This martial spirit certificate is as real as it gets." The gatekeeper laughed as he took the money and quickly put it in his pocket.
"Go straight in and you'll reach the main teaching building. The academic affairs office is on the first floor, and you can see it just by looking up. That's where all the new students register." After receiving the money, the security guard became much more enthusiastic.
Fang's father used to study here, so he didn't need the gatekeeper to give him directions. However, he still thanked him and led Fang Tian directly to the academic affairs office.
"Thank you for your hard work, Teacher Su. I brought my son, Fang Tian, to register. This is his Martial Soul Certificate." Mr. Fang greeted the teacher in charge of registration and handed over the Martial Soul Certificate.
……
Registration was quick. Fang Tian, a work-study student, was assigned to Dormitory 7, which was full of work-study students. Then Fang Tian went to pick up his school uniform.
Seeing that it was lunchtime, Fang's father took Fang Tian to eat first. During the meal, he naturally taught Fang Tian some tricks of the trade at the Notting City Junior Soul Master Academy. After lunch, Fang's father took Fang Tian to buy bedding, left him some money, and then turned back to the village.
Fang Tian wasn't really a child, so he didn't feel lost or helpless when separated from adults. He simply picked up his blanket and went into Dormitory Seven.
"Are you new here today? I'm Li Hu, the head of Dormitory 7. The rule in Dormitory 7 is that the newcomer has to fight the head of the dormitory; whoever wins becomes the new boss of Dormitory 7!"
As soon as Fang Tian entered the dormitory, he was stopped by a boy who was about eleven or twelve years old, 1.5 meters tall, and quite strong.
"Holy crap! Is it a tradition in Dormitory 7 that the newcomers have to fight? And it's been going on for ages!" Fang Tian exclaimed in surprise.
"Dormitory Leader Li, there's no need for fighting. My martial soul is a mutated sweet potato, I can't fight. You can continue being the dormitory leader, I'll just be the little brother and cheer for the boss." Fang Tian said, releasing his martial soul.
Fang Tian is here to learn, not to become the boss. Winning would bring no benefit, and losing would definitely result in a beating, so why bother fighting?
When Li Hu saw that Fang Tian's martial soul was indeed a sweet potato, and that it had sprouted and rotted, he was speechless.
"Alright then." Li Hu scratched his head and walked back to his bed.
"Classmates, these are some I brought from home. Please have a taste." Fang Tian took out some rabbit meat snacks and distributed them to everyone. He didn't bring many; a handful for each person was almost gone.
"What's this?" Looking at the little things, a classmate picked up one and put it in his mouth.
"Is this meat?"
The students in Dormitory 7 were all part-time students from families that weren't well-off and rarely ate meat. Hearing it was meat, they couldn't wait to stuff it into their mouths.
"Delicious, delicious! What kind of meat is this?" Li Hu asked in a muffled voice as he chewed on the meat chunks.
"Rabbit meat. The village caught a few rabbits a few days ago, and when they saw I was coming to the Soul Master Academy, they made some for me to bring," Fang Tian replied with a smile.
"Sharing good stuff with everyone, that's loyal of me. Don't worry, if you get bullied at the academy in the future, just tell me and I'll get revenge for you," Li Hu assured him, patting his chest.
"Yes, yes! We'll help too," the other students from Dormitory 7 assured them.
"Then thank you all in advance." Fang Tian shared things to build good relationships with everyone, and now that he had achieved his goal, he was naturally generous with his words of thanks.
Fang Tian chose a bed that was far from the door and where he wouldn't be disturbed. He took out the quilt, made it up, and settled in.
"Which one is Fang Tian?" A middle-aged man dressed in a teacher's uniform suddenly entered through the entrance of Dormitory 7.
"Teacher, I am Fang Tian," Fang Tian quickly stood up and replied.
"Each work-study student is required to do some work within their ability for the school. I am the teacher who arranges the work-study students. My surname is Wang, and you can call me Teacher Wang."
"Hello, Teacher Wang."
"Hello, from now on you and Zhao Feng will be responsible for the small garden on the south side of the playground. You must clean it carefully every morning. If we receive too many complaints, the school has the right to revoke your work-study student status."
"I understand, Teacher Wang," Fang Tian said.
"Don't worry, Teacher Wang, I will take good care of Fang Tian." At this moment, a rather handsome boy stood up and said to Teacher Wang, and nodded to Fang Tian.
"Okay." Teacher Wang nodded to Zhao Feng, then turned to Fang Tian and said, "The school will pay you ten copper soul coins every day as a reward. Remember to clean up every morning. I'm leaving now."
"We also have to clean every day," Fang Tian complained.
"There's nothing we can do. We're work-study students, so our schooling is free. Besides, the school gives us ten copper soul coins a day as a reward," Zhao Feng comforted him.
"Yes, yes, cleaning isn't hard work, and it can be done quickly without taking up much time," the other roommates chimed in, trying to comfort them.
……
And so Fang Tian was officially enrolled.
However, Fang Tian had already learned to read and write from his parents, so he was naturally not in the same class as some students who still had to start from literacy. The students in his class now were all similar to him, skipping literacy and starting directly with martial spirit knowledge.
After attending a few classes, Fang Tian realized that everything was already familiar to him, with only the Soul Beast Compendium being somewhat useful. Now, he no longer listens to the lectures; he just flips through the Soul Beast Compendium on his own.
Later, I stopped going to class altogether. After cleaning in the morning, I would go to the back hill of the school to practice the Meridian Flow Theory. In the morning, I would practice the Eight Pieces of Brocade and sword techniques. In the afternoon, I would spend all my time in the school library, and in the evening, I would continue practicing the Meridian Flow Theory. My days were packed with activities: dormitory, library, back hill of the school, and cafeteria—a simple routine.
While browsing in the library, Fang Tian finally figured out his current timeline based on some of the latest books and the Spirit Hall's newspaper—Douluo Calendar 2591, Fang Tian enrolled in Notting City's Junior Spirit Master Academy. And this year was still 40 years before the little rascal was born.
