Chapter 18 The Mutant's Number One Hater!
Chapter 18 The Mutant's Number One Hater!
The Lawrence family estate is located in the most luxurious upscale neighborhood of Santa Fe.
Those who can live here are among the wealthiest businessmen in the entire city of Santa Fe; ordinary people simply cannot set foot here.
The Lawrence family's estate is located in the heart of the wealthy neighborhood, and from a distance, it looks like a magnificent castle.
Logan, led by his servants, successfully entered the extravagant manor.
The manor is filled with trees, including several ancient trees that look to be hundreds of years old.
These forests are meticulously pruned by gardeners every day, resulting in lush, orderly groves without any jarring elements. The air here is incredibly fresh; it's hard to imagine that such fresh air could exist in this desolate place.
Logan followed the servant, somewhat awkwardly straightening his wrinkled, cheap suit, trying to make himself look less out of place.
After all, compared to the Lawrence family's estate, the abandoned factory where he lived was practically a junkyard!
Even the attendant leading the way, dressed in a uniform tailcoat, looked more expensive than his cheap suit.
"Mr. James, Master Chris is waiting for you upstairs."
The servants led Logan into the palace-like residence. The magnificent house was so luxurious that even a simple decoration could be worth a year's salary for an ordinary person!
The spiral staircase leading to the second floor has handrails that are even plated with real gold, making it extremely dazzling under natural light.
The servant led Logan upstairs and gently knocked on the door of a room. "Young Master Chris, Mr. James has arrived."
After speaking, without waiting for a response from inside, the servant turned and went downstairs, gesturing for Logan to push the door open and enter before leaving.
Logan opened the door and went into the office.
Although it's called an office, it occupies a larger area than a standard basketball court. The side with good natural light is all fitted with floor-to-ceiling windows, so you can clearly see the blue sky and white clouds outside.
The office is meticulously decorated, with oil paintings hanging on the walls, any one of which could fetch tens of millions of dollars at auction. The youngest items in the collection display cases date back to the First Industrial Revolution!
Chris, who was drinking tea on the leather sofa in the office, greeted Logan with a smile, "Logan, I'm glad you're on time."
Logan nodded, then looked at the other person sitting on the sofa opposite Chris, his face immediately stiffening.
Chris quickly introduced with a smile, "This is my guest today, Mr. Donald Pierce. By the way, he's a die-hard Wolverine fan, so you might have a lot in common."
"When I was a kid, I often heard stories about Wolverine and the X-Men. I have a special fondness for superhero stories."
Donald stood up with a smile and warmly extended his hand to Logan.
Logan stared at Donald, scanned the office to make sure there weren't a group of fully armed men hiding there, and then politely shook his hand.
Compared to Donald's beaming smile, Logan's expression was slightly somber.
He never expected that Donald would directly approach the Lawrence family and even arrange for him to meet with them!
Chris watched the two shake hands, a smile still on his face. "I suddenly remembered I have some things to take care of, Logan. I hope you have a pleasant conversation with Mr. Donald."
After saying that, Chris got up and left the office.
Donald sat back down in his original seat and warmly invited Logan to sit down as well.
"Mr. Chris told me you used to be an Uber driver?" Donald toyed with a teacup in front of him using his prosthetic arm, while squinting at Logan. "I'm actually looking for a Mexican woman with a little girl. I wonder if you've ever driven them?"
Logan knew he was asking about Laura, and immediately shook his head decisively, "Never seen her."
Donald wasn't surprised by Logan's reply and continued, "The Mexican woman's name is Gabriela."
Logan remained calm. "Never heard of it."
Although he had just texted Gabriela last night, Logan knew that admitting it now would definitely cause some unnecessary trouble.
Donald smiled and shook his head, picked up his teacup and took a sip, but his eyes remained fixed on Logan.
Although Logan appeared very calm, Donald did not believe his story.
He understood that the only person Gabriela would contact upon arriving in Santa Fe was Wolverine. After all, Laura carried Wolverine's genes, and the only person capable of helping her was Wolverine.
However, Logan insisted he didn't know her, and Donald couldn't do anything about it. This wasn't the time to have a direct confrontation with Logan, since they still needed him to lure Laura out.
Donald finished his tea in one gulp, then stood up and handed Logan a business card.
"It seems you've had too many clients and can't recall them right now. I hope you can try to remember them later. If you remember any information about the Mexican woman and the child, feel free to call me anytime."
As he spoke, a warm smile appeared on his face. "Don't worry, Mr. Logan won't have worked for nothing. That little girl is very important to us. If you provide information about her, we will offer you a generous reward."
Logan took the business card, glanced at it briefly, nodded, and put it in his pocket.
Donald smiled and turned to leave the office.
Logan watched Donald's retreating figure, then sat down on the sofa with a somber expression.
It seems that the Lawrence family and Donald have at least a superficial cooperative relationship, which is not a good thing for him.
"It seems you two are having a good conversation."
Chris suddenly pushed the door open and entered, smiling as he looked at Logan.
"Why tell him I'm in Santa Fe City? You should know he's a hunter from the mutant lab!"
Logan looked coldly at Chris, his heart filled with rage at the Lawrence family's betrayal.
Although he knew that Donald would definitely ask someone to find out his whereabouts, he did not expect that the Lawrence family would betray him so easily!
"Mr. Donald works for Dr. Rice, who is one of the top biologists in the United States."
Chris didn't directly answer Logan's question, instead saying to himself, "Making a good relationship with him would be very beneficial for the family."
"They're not good people. If anything goes wrong, they'll abandon you at any time."
Logan's warning wasn't well-intentioned; he was worried that the Lawrence family's close cooperation with Donald's group might be detrimental to him.
He also remembered that Dr. Rice had been involved in research on genetically modified foods for mutants.
This guy is the biggest hater of mutants. To be honest, given the chance, Logan would choose to kill Rice.
"You don't need to worry about that. As long as you work for Lawrence, no one will hurt you."
Chris, still smiling, turned and walked to the desk, carefully picking up a porcelain bowl from the table.
"Do you recognize this? Look how beautiful it is! It's an unparalleled work of art in human history. It's hard to imagine how the East could create such a perfect treasure more than a thousand years ago."
Chris stared at the porcelain bowl, his eyes filled with fascination.
"Tang Sancai (Tang tri-colored pottery)".
Logan glanced at the porcelain bowl. He didn't know much about antiques, but the bowl's standard mix of white, green, and yellow colors allowed him to identify its type, since he had also come from China before his transmigration.
"That's right."
Chris carefully set down the porcelain bowl and exclaimed, "The treasures left behind by that Eastern country that called itself Tang are simply captivating to everyone."
"Speak your mind."
Logan didn't want to continue the topic of antiques; he didn't believe Chris was simply showing off his collection.
Chris chuckled softly. "Remember those robbers you and Samuel encountered when you went to Nevada last time? The ones you took down ten of by yourself."
Logan didn't respond, but simply waited quietly for Chris to continue.
Chris suddenly stopped smiling and said in a deep voice, "They are not ordinary gang members, but members of the Juarez family. You may not know, but the Juarez family and our Chris family have always been mortal enemies. At least since my great-grandfather's generation, we have been fighting each other. Back then, it was common to fight with revolvers."
"You want me to wipe out the Juarez family?"
Logan asked with a stern face, "Then you overestimate me."
He doesn't have the strength to confront a large family head-on right now.
"No, no, no."
Chris shook his head repeatedly and continued, "Most of the Juarez family's businesses are in the smuggling industry. I recently received news that they have a batch of antique ceramics that they are going to smuggle into the port of New York. That's a coveted fortune."
"You want me to intercept the goods?"
Logan immediately understood, and also realized Chris's intention in arranging his meeting with Donald today.
He was trying to tell himself that if he didn't agree, they would have Donald take action against him at any time!
"It's always so pleasant to chat with smart people."
Chris smiled and looked at Logan, gazing at the porcelain bowl. "Look how beautiful it is. There are countless treasures just as beautiful in that shipment."
Logan didn't respond, but just looked down at the porcelain bowl and realized that Chris's fondness for the bowl seemed to be just a pretense, and he didn't even realize that it was tilted.
Logan reached out, trying to straighten the porcelain bowl.
However, Chris slapped his hand away in disgust, halfway through his outstretched hand. "Don't touch it! Méprisable!"
Logan's expression darkened, but he quickly regained his composure, withdrew his hand, and said softly, "I'm sorry."
Chris stopped talking nonsense, staring intently at the porcelain bowl, and said sternly, "Go back and pack your things. We're leaving tonight. This is a serious matter, and I don't want to see any accidents!"
Logan nodded, turned and walked out of the office. As the office door closed, his expression instantly turned cold.
Chris may not know that Logan, being Canadian, knows a few words of French.
Logan knew that the word he had just used meant "despicable" in French!
