Chapter 22 Steve's Old Comrades in His Memories!
Chapter 22 Steve's Old Comrades in His Memories!
"This...how is this possible!"
Steve gently stroked the vibranium shield, and the clear cracks transmitted through his skin made him momentarily unable to believe his eyes.
This isn't just ordinary paint chipping; there are actually three deep claw marks!
He couldn't believe that something in this world could leave a mark on a vibranium shield!
Vibranium is the hardest known metal; even direct fire from a fighter jet's machine gun cannot leave a dent on it.
How did that person manage to do that?!
"Captain, are you alright?"
As Steve was still reeling, he heard a series of hurried footsteps.
Rumlow, who had originally led the pursuit of Samuel and Conrad, finally returned.
Seeing Steve sitting on the ground with a furrowed brow, Rumlow quickly knelt down to check on Steve's injuries.
The other agents rushed to check on their fallen comrades and Black Widow's injuries.
"I'm fine."
Steve slowly stood up. Although Logan's attack was fierce, he was, after all, a super soldier injected with the super serum, so such injuries were not a cause for concern.
"The guy escaped; he's incredibly strong."
Steve spoke in a calm voice, unable to resist recalling the details of the battle just now.
Although the opponent could not quickly defeat him, his fierce offensive and superb combat skills did indeed force him to retreat step by step.
If you fight a prolonged battle on your own without outside help, you will inevitably lose in the end.
Thinking of this, Steve couldn't help but frown.
"I also failed to apprehend his accomplices."
Langlom's angry words interrupted Steve's thoughts. He gritted his teeth and said, "Those guys are like rats. They disappear in the blink of an eye. Plus, there are too many containers here and the terrain is complicated. We can't do anything about them."
Steve nodded, looked at the already opened container, and said in a deep voice, "The important thing isn't the people, go check if the goods are still there."
Upon hearing this, Langlom immediately realized what was happening and quickly led Steve into the container, turning on his flashlight to search through a pile of crates.
"no."
Langlom examined the cargo carefully but did not find the two boxes, BU-26 and BU-27.
"Damn it, which group took them away?"
Langlom, unwilling to give up, rummaged through the cargo box.
"Stop looking."
At that moment, Natasha's voice suddenly came.
Natasha looked terrible. She didn't have Steve's physical prowess. Logan's heavy blow had turned her face pale. With the help of an agent, she slowly walked into the container.
"We've been tricked. The intelligence was flawed; the goods aren't here at all."
Natasha saw Logan enter the container, but ultimately returned empty-handed; she was certain the goods hadn't fallen into the other party's hands.
Steve frowned, thought for a moment, and then immediately ordered, "Report to headquarters, send more men, seal off the entire dock, and search every container."
Roram nodded emphatically, immediately stepped out of the container, and contacted S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters to ask them to send someone over.
Steve turned to the other agents. "Go and pull up all the CCTV footage from the docks, including all the surveillance footage from the nearby streets. We must find traces of the attackers and determine their escape route!"
Several agents quickly turned and took action.
Only Steve and Natasha remained inside the container.
Using the light from Steve's flashlight, Natasha noticed three scratches on the vibranium shield.
"Captain, your shield..."
Natasha stepped forward in disbelief, her fingers lightly brushing against the scratches. Sensing the unevenness from her fingertips, she withdrew her fingers as if she had been electrocuted.
"Was it that person from earlier?"
Natasha looked up abruptly, her eyes wide with disbelief.
Someone actually managed to leave a mark on vibranium!
"Um."
Steve's expression also became very serious. He looked down at the shield on his arm, gently touching the claw marks. Looking at the three claw marks, a person suddenly came to mind.
"Speaking of which, I am now reminded of an old comrade-in-arms whose steel claws still leave a deep impression on me."
Steve murmured, his expression lost in memories.
"An old comrade-in-arms?"
Natasha was taken aback. Steve had been frozen for seventy years, and the person he called an old comrade-in-arms must be at least a hundred years old.
Steve nodded. "An old comrade-in-arms from World War II. But I'm probably overthinking it. It's been over seventy years. He couldn't possibly be alive now. Even if he were, he'd be a centenarian by now."
Natasha nodded noncommittally, "But the identities of this group are definitely not simple."
Logan's superb fighting skills and the excellent weapons in their squad are beyond the reach of ordinary organizations.
After a moment's thought, Natasha suddenly said, "Could it be a Hydra agent?"
She believes that, apart from S.H.I.E.L.D., only Hydra has such capabilities.
"Hydra?"
Steve's expression suddenly turned to utter disgust. "I thought they'd all beheaded during World War II!"
"The heads that Hydra cuts off will grow back."
Natasha sighed helplessly, "Let's report the situation to Nick Fury first. He needs to pay the price for his wrong information."
Steve nodded, turned and walked out of the container. He glanced subconsciously at the place where the fight had taken place, and the image of the glaring steel claws under the moonlight flashed through his mind. His brows furrowed instantly.
Those steel claws looked so real.
Is it really just a coincidence?
Is there also a super soldier with claws in Hydra?
Meanwhile, in a hotel near the port.
The four gathered in the room, all looking rather dejected after the mission's failure, with Conrad bearing the most grim expression.
"Idiot, who gave you permission to kill someone from S.H.I.E.L.D.!"
Logan stood before Conrad, his expression stern as he angrily rebuked, "S.H.I.E.L.D. has countless connections with the Avengers. If we offend them, even the Lawrence family won't dare protect us!"
Conrad sat in the chair, head down, silent, clutching a beer can tightly in his hand.
Logan stared at Conrad, sometimes wanting to kill the idiot.
If S.H.I.E.L.D. really investigates the agent's death thoroughly, it won't matter even if he escapes from the United States!
Samuel shrank back, sensing Logan's anger and too terrified to utter a word.
Josh, on the other hand, remained relatively calm. To ease the team's emotions, he quickly said, "Conrad was just acting on impulse. Besides, getting angry now won't help. The fact that the agent is dead is irreversible. Instead of being angry, we should think about what to do next."
Logan took a deep breath, suppressing his anger, and said coldly, "The intelligence this time was wrong. I'll contact Chris first and see what his plans are."
Logan walked out of the room, and the door had just closed.
Conrad's silent face instantly turned to anger, and the rage in his heart made him crush the beer can in his hand, scattering beer all over the floor.
"Logan, it's good to hear from you. How's it going? Did you get the goods?"
Chris's cheerful voice came through the phone.
"no."
Logan replied in a deep voice, "Your information is wrong. There are no those two boxes in the container at all."
Chris on the other end of the phone froze, his previous cheerful demeanor vanishing instantly. "How could this be?! Are you sure you searched carefully?!"
"I may be a bit old, but I'm not blind!"
Logan's face darkened; Chris's poor intelligence had made everyone's efforts in vain all night.
Moreover, he might also offend S.H.I.E.L.D. and Captain America, which is not a good thing for him.
He demanded, "What exactly was in those two boxes of goods that even S.H.I.E.L.D. was involved? We clashed with them, and Conrad even killed one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents! We're in a very dangerous situation now!"
Damn it.
Upon hearing this news, Chris flew into a rage. "That idiot!"
The person on the other end of the phone took a deep breath and said again, "Listen, Logan, that shipment is really important. We have to get our hands on it. Don't come back yet. I'm going to find out where it is!"
"You're insane!"
Logan growled angrily, "This is New York! They might have already started a city-wide siege. Staying here is tantamount to suicide!"
He paused, then added, "If S.H.I.E.L.D. knew I was Wolverine, things would get even worse!"
"I know it's dangerous!"
Chris replied without hesitation, "Nobody wants to offend S.H.I.E.L.D., but that shipment is more important. If you help me retrieve it, I'll raise your reward to $100,000!"
"Not even one million!"
Logan firmly refused, saying, "No matter how much money you have, if you're not alive to spend it, it's just a pile of blank paper!"
"Logan, 100,000 is no small sum."
Chris's voice suddenly turned incredibly dangerous, "That's enough to buy your elderly father a comfortable retirement home!"
Logan remained silent; this was a blatant threat.
"One hundred thousand, not a penny less!"
In the end, Logan had no choice but to accept it.
Now that he's not by the professor's side, it would be incredibly easy for Chris to hurt him!
Hearing this, Chris smiled again. "A wise choice. I'll go gather intelligence now. Wait for my news."
After saying that, he hung up the phone.
Logan stared at his phone, his expression turning incredibly cold. He clenched his fist and slammed it against the wall.
"Damn it!"
"Chris, you will soon pay the price for your wolf-killing-sheep mentality."
Logan took a deep breath; he hadn't expected Chris to be so ruthless.
But it won't be long before the Lawrence family realizes the consequences of trying to drive away wolves and devour sheep.
Logan composed himself and turned to look at the port not far away outside the window.
This place is no longer safe to stay in; S.H.I.E.L.D. will be coming for it soon.
We need to find a new place!
