Chapter 51 Mutants at the Word Auction
Chapter 51 Mutants at the Cross Auction
Link Town is not far from Nevada, and around 10 p.m., the group entered Nevada.
Logan drove his car to Victor's apartment building and parked it in the driveway.
"Big cities".
Caliban was practically pressed against the car window, gazing at the skyscrapers of Las Vegas.
Here, skyscrapers stand tall, traffic flows like a river, and the city is bustling and noisy. Even the afternoon breeze seems to carry the scent of money, yet this very scene makes him feel deeply out of place.
"Las Vegas is still the same as I remember it."
Charles's pupils reflected the shadow of the poster, which featured casino logos and slogans that gave the illusion that entering the casino would make you a billionaire.
"I'm going upstairs to find Victor. You guys wait for me in the car, don't go out."
Logan finished speaking and was about to get out of the car.
But Laura, sitting in the passenger seat, patted his arm, her eyes filled with hope, and pointed to a piece of paper.
The paper contained an address: "Eden—North Dakota—48.97033N, 102.155491".
Looking at the address, which was even marked with latitude and longitude, Logan nodded. He understood what Laura meant; the little girl hoped to go to the place where she could meet up with her friends as soon as possible.
"Don't worry, I promised Gabriela that I would take you there, but not now. Give me a few days. I need to see an uncle right now."
Logan ruffled Laura's hair and whispered a reassurance to her.
Laura put away the papers, nodded obediently, and then continued to lean against the window, curiously watching the bustling metropolis.
Having grown up in a laboratory, she was filled with curiosity about everything around her.
Logan got out of the car and jogged to Victor's apartment.
The apartment was still as dilapidated as before. He reached out and knocked on the door, but after waiting for a long time, no one responded. Logan couldn't help but knock harder, making the door frame rattle.
Click.
The door opened, but it wasn't Victor's door; it was the door of a Black neighbor from next door.
The neighbor poked his head out and said impatiently, "What are you knocking for? Nobody's home!"
Logan quickly asked, "Where did he go?"
The neighbor, looking utterly disgusted, said, "God knows, he'd probably already been thrown into the sea to feed the sharks!"
Upon hearing this, Logan's eyes instantly turned cold.
The black man visibly panicked, realizing that Logan seemed like someone not to be trifled with, and his attitude quickly softened. He hurriedly said, "He might have gotten into trouble. He was taken away a few days ago and hasn't come back yet."
Logan was startled and quickly asked again, "Who took it?"
"Dude, you can't expect me to know everyone in Las Vegas."
The black man nodded, paused, and then, as if remembering something, said again, "By the way, I think I saw those people who took your friend away at a casino. They even got into a fight, knocked over a lot of bowls and chopsticks, and made quite a commotion. By the time I went out to check, he had already been taken away. Your friend probably owes the casino gambling debts, but so many days have passed, he's probably already been sold to some shady den. Even if you take the ransom, you probably won't be able to get him back."
After saying that, the black man quickly pulled his head back and slammed the door shut.
Logan glanced at Victor's door and noticed a thin layer of dust on the handle, indicating that it had indeed been untouched for several days.
Recalling the black man's words, Logan frowned, went downstairs to his car, briefly told Charles about the situation, and drove the group to a nearby hotel for temporary accommodation.
He then returned to the car, pondering the possibility of taking Victor's forces with him.
He had to find Victor, after all, Victor was Wolverine's only family in the world. After so many separations, he absolutely did not want his last brother to leave again.
evening.
Logan parked his car outside a casino, turned off the engine and lights, sat in the car smoking, and stared intently at the casino through the smoke.
As night falls, casinos are busiest with customers. People come from all directions, carrying gambling funds and dreaming of getting rich overnight. Stepping into the casino, under the dazzling neon lights, they have the illusion that they have reached the pinnacle of life.
The casino's owner was Nortland, who was also Victor's boss. At that moment, the lights were on in the casino's second-floor office, and shadowy figures could be seen occasionally passing through the curtains.
Logan stared at the office. If there was anyone most likely to take Victor away, even if it wasn't Notland, he was certainly someone who knew the truth.
But Logan didn't intend to go in and confront them directly; that would be too foolish.
After all, the security guards in the casino are not to be underestimated. If they find out that he is pressuring their boss, a conflict is inevitable. That might not save Victor, but instead attract Dr. Rice or S.H.I.E.L.D.
Right now, he shouldn't cause any big commotion.
As cigarettes turned into butts, the night deepened, and the lights on the second floor of the office finally went out.
Logan stubbed out his cigarette, lowered his head, and walked through the crowd, making his way to the back door. He climbed up the water pipe to the second floor and entered the corridor.
While singing filled the air and gamblers shouted wildly downstairs, the second floor remained quiet. The building's soundproofing ensured that no noise could penetrate its walls.
Logan quietly walked to the door of Notland's office, pressed his ear against it, and listened alertly to the sounds inside.
After confirming that there was no sound of anyone breathing inside, Logan pushed the door open and entered.
The room was unusually dark, with thick curtains blocking out any colored lights from outside. If an ordinary person came here, they probably wouldn't even know where to go.
Fortunately, Logan's eyesight was better in the dark than in the daytime.
He went straight to Nordland's desk.
It was clear that Mr. Notland had recently encountered some troubles. The ashtray was full of cigar butts, there were several empty bottles of red wine on the table, and various documents on the table were in disarray, all of them financial reports and tax rates from several casinos.
Logan had no interest in whether he had evaded taxes or not, and carefully opened the drawer, slowly searching for any clues about Victor.
After searching around, Logan found a report at the bottom of the drawer. It was a debt notice that indicated that Notland had a debt of fifty million US dollars. Such a large debt would not be enough to pay even if he sold all the casinos under his name.
Logan carefully examined the documents and understood that the debt stemmed from a loss Nordland suffered in an investment project. If it wasn't repaid within a month, the wealthy businessman could be declared bankrupt.
"Isn't it of any useful value at all?"
He had no interest in whether the wealthy businessman was bankrupt or not; however, another document lying beneath the main document immediately caught his attention.
The document was titled "Cross Auction".
This should just be an official letter from the auction house, but what really caught Logan's attention was the content below, which indicated the auction item: "Mutants".
