Chapter 77 Steve's Investigation: Participating in the Capture of Wolverine!
On a small island in a lake in downtown Washington, D.C., stands the magnificent and imposing Tri-Wing Building.
In the director's office on the top floor, Maria Hill walked in with a serious expression. "Director, what brings you here?"
She stood in the middle of the office, looking at the man behind the desk.
"This is a document sent from Canada, take a look."
Nick Fury, with a solemn expression, pressed a button, and a pale blue holographic projection appeared in front of Hill.
Hill looked at the projected content, which was a video file with a photo attached.
In the scene, a figure with steel claws wreaks havoc in the prison. Even though he looks somewhat old, he is still like a ferocious wolf, ruthlessly reaping the lives of the prison guards. Blood soaks his body, making him look like a demon from hell.
The video ended after all the prison guards had fallen. Hill turned off the video and looked at another photo.
The photo was taken on a wide road, where a pool of glaring blood flowed on the ground, and a group of stark white skeletons lay in the blood, looking as if they had been dead for many years, but their clothes were brand new.
"Was that Wolverine in that video just now?"
Hill paused, looking slightly stunned.
Although the figure in the video looked very similar to Wolverine, she didn't believe it was Wolverine and preferred to believe it was a Wolverine clone developed by some laboratory.
After all, the Wolverine in the picture looked much younger and stronger, which was very different from the Wolverine she remembered.
However, Fury responded with a heavy nod, his expression serious, "Based on the intelligence we have so far, it is indeed him."
"How could this be!"
Hilton looked shocked. "As far as I know, he looks at least seventy or eighty years old, but he's actually nearly a hundred. His physical condition has declined drastically. But the guy in the picture is obviously younger and stronger. His suppressed healing factor can't help him turn back the clock."
They are aware that the government is developing genetically modified foods to suppress the X gene, and Wolverine is one of the victims. Now he can unleash the power shown in the video.
"He may have taken Rice's enhancement serum."
Fury shrugged and offered what he considered the most reasonable explanation: "The current situation is that they have now fled to Canada."
"Returning to one's homeland?"
Hill smiled. "I thought he would never go back."
Fury looked helpless. "Who knows what they're thinking? Anyway, even though he's Canadian, he's on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s wanted list, and we have to follow up and investigate this."
He added, "However, we don't need your help until we find him."
Hill looked puzzled. "Then why did you call me here?"
"That photo." Fury's expression turned extremely serious, and he said in a deep voice, "More important than Wolverine is the criminal in the photo. Clearly, another extremely dangerous mutant has appeared. Before he continues to commit evil deeds, you need to confirm his identity."
To Wolverine, the counterattack was nothing more than the final, unwilling roar of an old man on his deathbed, while the guy who melted dozens of scouts into bones was clearly a greater threat.
"Mutants were no longer a threat, but because of the experiments conducted by Rice and his group, those dangerous guys are starting to stir again!" Fury said with a look of disgust.
He disliked these dangerous experiments, but these mutant experiments were unstoppable, as many people wanted to uncover the secrets of the X gene and use them for their own purposes.
The problem is that those guys who are obsessed with experiments can't control the products they create, and unexpected situations keep happening, so in the end, S.H.I.E.L.D. has to solve them.
Fury took a deep breath in exasperation. Compared to the aging Wolverine and Professor X, these unidentified mutants with terrifying abilities were more worthy of their concern.
"Yes, I will investigate this matter myself."
Hill realized the seriousness of the situation and stood up straight with a serious expression, nodding.
boom!
However, just before she left, the door was suddenly opened.
"Investigate what?"
A man exuding an air of nobility, dressed in an expensive casual suit and sporting a small mustache, casually strolled into the office and sat down on the sofa as if no one else was there. "Looks like I missed some big events during my vacation."
Fury looked at the man, his face full of helplessness, and snapped, "Tony, I've told you, you have to knock before entering my office!"
"I've already knocked."
Tony, with a nonchalant air, casually fiddled with the ornaments on the table, saying indifferently, "You were probably too engrossed in your conversation to hear me."
Fury felt a headache coming on and asked with a sullen face, "What do you want from me?"
Tony paused in his fiddling with the ornaments, looked up, abandoning his relaxed demeanor, and asked in a deep voice, "I heard you lost the Mind Scepter?"
Fury's already dark face darkened even more. "This is a matter for S.H.I.E.L.D., and you have no right to interfere."
Hearing this, Tony scoffed, "Ha, I at least withstood a nuclear bomb for it, and also for you and S.H.I.E.L.D.!"
Fury remained silent, his remaining eye fixed intently on Tony.
Since the Battle of New York, this guy has suffered from severe anxiety disorder and is always particularly concerned about the topic of aliens. It is said that he has been working day and night at home building armor to defend against alien attacks, which is a big headache for Fury.
After a long silence, Fury said, "Go home and rest. I will investigate this matter thoroughly and give you an explanation. But this time it was definitely not taken by aliens. It was probably those Hydra bastards. You don't need to worry too much."
Tony didn't say anything, nor did he seem to want to leave.
Seeing the two locked in a standoff, Hill wisely said, "I'll be going now. I'll report back to you if there are any new developments."
After saying that, he opened the door and left, heading straight for the elevator.
But as soon as the elevator doors opened, they found Steve Rogers standing alone inside.
"Captain, if you're also here to see Chief Fury, that's perfect timing. Tony's in his office too."
Hill greeted Steve with a smile, but couldn't help glancing back at Fury's office, muttering again, "And I bet they won't be done talking so soon."
However, Steve made way for Hill in the elevator, his eyes fixed on her. "I came to see you. They said you were with Fury, so I came all the way here."
"Looking for me?"
Hill stepped into the elevator and stood next to Steve, turning his head to look at him with a puzzled expression.
"Yes."
Steve nodded, and as the elevator doors closed and slowly descended, he spoke again: "You're investigating Logan?"
Hill looked at Steve's gaze, his eyes filled with an urgent question.
Hill was momentarily taken aback by the look in his eyes, and instinctively wanted to shake his head and refuse to provide any information.
But Steve spoke first: "Don't try to fool me. I've investigated thoroughly. Logan is currently charged as a major wanted criminal, but it's clear that the evidence against him is insufficient. He can only be considered a suspect for now."
As he spoke, Steve handed over a document, which contained the results of his investigation over the past few days.
He paused, then added, "And what about the last auction? You knew perfectly well that auctioning mutants was illegal, yet S.H.I.E.L.D. turned a blind eye. Why was that?"
"Furthermore, according to the intelligence I've gathered, 80% of those who participated in the auction are involved in large-scale illicit activities, and the remaining 20% are also involved in some form of illicit business. Among them are quite a few officials, yet you still turn a blind eye. Is this how S.H.I.E.L.D. treats criminals? Pursuing a suspect relentlessly while ignoring those with solid evidence against them?"
Steve's expression was grim, clearly angered by S.H.I.E.L.D.'s actions.
Hill looked at the documents Steve handed him, paused for a moment, then laughed and said, "Captain, it seems you're not exactly an honest American soldier either. You can't get this kind of intelligence through ordinary means."
Special cases should be handled in a special way.
Steve responded calmly, then added, "I request to participate in the investigation of Logan!"
"Watch your words, Captain."
Hill shook his head and said, "Our mission with Wolverine isn't investigation, it's capture!"
Even so, I want to be involved!
Steve's eyes were resolute, as if he was determined to participate in everything against Logan.
However, Hill shook her head in the end. "Captain, cases involving mutants are extremely dangerous and complicated. Too many things have happened during the years you were frozen. There are many things that cannot be explained to you, and even if they were explained, you probably wouldn't understand. In short, don't try to get involved in this matter anymore, at least not now."
As soon as she finished speaking, the elevator arrived at the first floor, and the elevator doors slowly opened. Hill walked out without hesitation, giving Steve no chance to object.
Steve looked at Hill's retreating figure and muttered in a low voice, "The Avengers are not affiliated with S.H.I.E.L.D."

...
Mutant Sanctuary Farm.
After dinner, Logan, Victor, and Caliban pushed the professor toward McCain's office.
This is a small building located in the middle of the farm. The office is not big, but it is fully equipped with various facilities, including a coffee machine. However, it mainly contains miscellaneous information.
When they arrived, McCa was sitting in his office looking at documents on his desk. Upon seeing them, he warmly invited them to sit down and poured them some water.
"It's almost time to rest, so we won't have any tea or coffee. We'll just have these few cups of water to serve you."
McCa handed the water glasses to the group and sat down on the sofa.
"Thank you, water is fine."
Logan nodded in response, then asked curiously, "I wonder what you called us here for? As long as it doesn't violate my principles, I'm willing to help."
He could tell that McCa must have asked them for something.
McCa said with a smile, "There are indeed some things that need your help, including Professor. I'm afraid you'll have to work hard later on."
Upon hearing this, Charles was slightly taken aback, then looked troubled and said, "Although I would be happy to help, my body can't take any more strain right now. If I participate in the mission, I'll only be a hindrance."
"No, no, no, you've misunderstood."
McCa shook his head repeatedly and hurriedly explained, "Of course I won't assign you any tasks. Although there is indeed a lot to do on the farm, we don't need to let an old man do these trivial things."
This left the group completely bewildered.
Logan asked, puzzled, "Then what do you need the professor for?"
McCa hesitated for a moment, then smiled bitterly, "I hope the professor can return to his old profession and teach the children in the shelter."
"Teaching?"
Charles was taken aback, then flattered and said, "No, no, no, I haven't taught students for a long time, and I'm afraid I can no longer be a qualified teacher."
He's almost a hundred years old now, and at that age, it's unlikely he can teach any more students.
"Professor, please don't be modest. The knowledge in your mind is absolutely the most precious treasure in the history of human civilization. I really hope that it can be passed down and that these children can master this knowledge. I think this is also what you would like to see."
McCa looked at the professor expectantly. "If I had a choice, I wouldn't have bothered you. But right now, the shelter's resources are limited, and we don't have enough funds to hire good teachers. But I don't want those children to never experience the joy of learning. Luckily you've come. I hope you can fill these gaps."
Charles hesitated for a moment, glanced at Logan and the others, and thought of the young mutants, including Laura. In the end, he could only nod. "Okay, but I need two days to prepare. It's been too many years since I've taught. I need time to get back into the mindset I had when I was a teacher."
McCarthy immediately smiled. "That's wonderful, Professor. I'm sure the children will love your teaching, and your knowledge will surely be passed down among them. Thank you on behalf of the children."
Charles waved his hand with a wry smile and said nothing more.
McCa then looked at Logan and Victor. "Logan, I hope you and Victor can also serve as teachers in the shelter."
These words stunned the two of them again, and Victor bluntly said, "I think you must be crazy. Neither of us has any education, let alone how to raise children."
They are both nearly two hundred years old. In their time, what they learned was very different from what we learn now, and besides, neither of them had any formal education.
"No, I hope you can teach me some self-defense techniques and combat experience."
McCa answered again, then said with a bitter expression, "To be honest, although our shelter has more than a hundred mutants, only about ten are actually capable of fighting. The others are either too old to fight or too young to fully develop their abilities."
"If we are besieged by government forces, the current number of combat personnel is simply not enough. We urgently hope that you two can improve the combat capabilities of some school-aged children to strengthen the defenses of the shelter."
After finishing speaking, McCa looked at the two of them with a sincere expression.
Logan then realized why McCa had come to them. He had thought it was to assign them tasks, but it turned out that it was to make them teachers at the shelter.
After thinking for a moment, Logan nodded and said, "If it's just about imparting combat skills and experience, Victor and I can take on that role."
Both of them have been fighting since World War II, and in terms of combat experience, probably no one has more than them.
"grateful."
McCain breathed a sigh of relief again, and finally looked at Caliban with a smile. "Caliban, although I don't have anything to assign you right now, your abilities are very important to our shelter. When we need to rescue other mutants, we'll probably need your help. I hope you won't refuse then. Of course, don't worry, it's just tracking. We'll try our best to keep you out of danger."
Caliban sensed the importance placed on him in McCain's words, and a smile immediately appeared on his face. "Of course, don't worry, as long as safety is guaranteed, I'll do anything."
McCa smiled and nodded, sincerely thanking the group, "Thank you all for your help to the shelter."
Logan smiled and waved his hand, "Now we're members of the shelter too, so doing what we can is just our duty."
After saying that, he suddenly thought of something and said with some worry, "By the way, do you have any way to get some medicine? The professor has Alzheimer's and needs medication, but we don't have much left."
Without medication to suppress the effects, Logan was worried that the professor, in his delirium, would unleash a catastrophe capable of destroying the entire shelter.
"That's a small matter."
McCa laughed and said, "Our medical clinic is well-stocked with medicines; we have almost all the commonly used drugs on the market. If you need any, you can register and get them."
After establishing the shelters, McCa knew the importance of drug reserves, and many of the shelters were stocked with medicine to prevent various accidents from happening.
Logan and Charles couldn't help but exchange a glance, and immediately relaxed a lot.
Medication has always been their biggest concern; professors these days can't live without it.
"Thank you." Charles and Logan nodded and thanked them quickly.
McCa waved with a smile, and then chatted with the group about some basic information about the shelter. By the time the conversation ended, it was completely dark, the moon was high in the sky, and the sky was full of stars.
Logan and the others said goodbye to McCain and pushed the professor back to rest.
Back at their lodgings, Logan couldn't help but ask, "What do you guys think of McCa?"
Caliban thought for a moment, then nodded and said, "I think he's good; he's very kind to the people in the shelter."
Victor remained silent for a moment, then murmured, "I always had this feeling that guy was a bit cunning, but overall he's not bad."
Hearing their answers, Logan nodded thoughtfully, then turned his gaze to Charles, "Professor, what are your thoughts?"
Charles thought for a moment and nodded, saying, "So far, I haven't sensed any malice in his heart."
He could see into people's hearts and knew whether some people were friendly to him. And his impression of McCa was that he wasn't a bad person.
Logan breathed a sigh of relief. "Professor, I hope your intuition is right."
Caliban couldn't help but roll his eyes at Logan. "Logan, you're getting less and less burdened. After all these years on the run, we've finally found a place where we can sleep, eat, and where it's not hot or noisy, with beautiful scenery, and where we don't have to worry about waking up to find the gates full of scouts. Stop overthinking it and just settle in."
Logan gave a wry smile, realizing that his years on the run had indeed made him overly cautious.
Thinking it over, he patted Caliban on the shoulder. "Alright, you take the professor to take a shower first."
As Caliban pushed the professor into the bathroom, there was a sudden knock on the door.
Logan glanced at the sky, wondering who else would come to visit in the middle of the night.
When Logan opened the door, he saw Lorna standing outside. She smiled and asked, "We need to go out tomorrow to buy some supplies for the shelter. Do you and Victor want to come along?"
Before Logan could even speak, Victor in the living room jumped up, rushed over, and nodded repeatedly, saying, "Yes, we'll definitely go!"
He looked at Lorna with excitement.
Two hundred years later, he thought he would never return, but now that he has returned to his old home, he has to go out and take a look around!
