American Zombie Detective

Chapter 15 Special Recruitment by the Murder and Major Crimes Division

The interviewer asked a few trivial questions, which Qin Jin answered with ease. Logan listened casually, occasionally glancing at the interviewer's comments, which put immense pressure on the three sheriffs.

"Oh, right," Logan said, as if suddenly remembering something, and asked Qin Jin:

"I remember Qin Han used to speak Spanish, Japanese, and Korean, and he even knew sign language. Can you do that?"

Qin Jin, recalling his public persona, said nonchalantly, "I'm a little less capable than my dad, but I can still hold a conversation and chat without any problems..."

"Hmm, not bad, not bad! English, Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, Korean... they're all great, and sign language is even better..."

The interviewer next to him immediately noted down other bonus points:

2. Proficient in Chinese. +10 points.

3. Fluent in Spanish. +10 points.

……

Indeed, language skills can receive preferential treatment and extra points in police assessments, but this requires the presentation of corresponding certificates or proof.

The young interviewer was about to ask this question, and just as he was about to speak, the veteran interviewer next to him nudged him with his elbow. He immediately swallowed his words, glanced to the side, and quickly copied it down on his own form.

Logan seemed to have been given a free hand, asking questions here and there:

"By the way, how are your driving skills? You can drive a big truck, right? You've worked on a farm before, there's no reason you can't, right?"

"No problem, anything is fine." Qin Jin lifted his eyelids.

The three interviewers immediately took notes: Proficient in driving various large vehicles, including police vehicles…

"Can you fix it?" Logan continued.

"No problem with ordinary vehicles, I can handle both big and small cars."

The interviewers continued taking notes: Proficient in vehicle repair, possessing mechanical repair skills…

"You've lived in the countryside for so long, you must be familiar with the outdoors, right?"

Continuing the record: Possesses wilderness survival skills and is adept at conducting investigations and solving cases in rural and suburban areas...

"Your father knows a lot about Eastern customs, and I think you probably do too."

To reiterate: Possesses cross-cultural communication skills, has an exceptional understanding of Eastern folk customs, and is a rare multifaceted talent…

Under Director Logan's kind yet assertive "care," Qin Jin's interview went smoothly and pleasantly. Questions that might have required deeper exploration were glossed over, while various bonus points emerged one after another.

Ultimately, his interview score unsurprisingly reached an astonishingly high level.

After the interview, Qin Jin politely said goodbye to the interviewer.

Logan followed him out, and the two walked to a quiet spot in the corridor.

Logan, with a smug smile on his face, patted Qin Jin's shoulder forcefully:

"Kid, your admission should be no problem, your grades are pretty good too... How about joining the detective department? I'll personally mentor you, a high starting point, fast promotion!"

What I want isn't rapid promotion! What I want is to keep a low profile, you know?

More importantly, Dolly, oh Dolly! You're so eager to get me into the detective agency, there's no doubt Dolly's in there, so I absolutely can't go! Absolutely!

Qin Jin's face showed a relaxed, unassuming humility:

"Uncle Logan, thank you for your kindness, but... my dad specifically told me that he wants me to start from the bottom as a police officer, to thoroughly familiarize myself with every aspect, and to accumulate experience. He said that this is the only way to become a truly good policeman."

He used himself as a shield, doing so skillfully and effortlessly.

Logan frowned, clearly feeling a bit disappointed, and wanted to offer further advice:

"Working at the grassroots level is important, but in the detective department you can get involved in more crucial cases and grow faster! I'll talk to your father..."

"Oh, Uncle Logan, it's so great that you could convince my dad!"

Qin Jin gave a reassuring smile:

"But I can't get in touch with my dad right now... How about this, I'll proceed as usual, and after you and my dad have discussed it, I'll apply for a transfer, okay? You know my dad's temper—"

Mentioning Qin Han's temper, Logan also felt a little intimidated. Thinking of the scene where he single-handedly fought his way out of a gangster's den, Roger felt that this matter—

We really should discuss this first. If we anger the old man, he might come to our house and beat us up. Meris probably won't even help us!

He laughed heartily and patted Qin Jin's back hard again:

"Alright! You're just like your dad, a man of principle! That's settled then, do a good job! I believe in you!"

Watching Logan leave with satisfaction, Qin Jin secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

Police Department? Are you kidding me! The patrol cars of the Western Police Department are his ideal cover and starting point right now!

The sense of relief after the assessment lasted for less than 24 hours.

The next morning, Qin Jin, carrying carefully prepared materials, walked into the brightly painted public primary school next to Qingcao Community.

After submitting the materials, the lady in charge greeted him with a smile and asked him to bring Alessa in three days for a simple aptitude interview, which relieved Qin Jin.

As Qin Jin walked out of the school gate, he pondered the matter of the Tong family.

Three days is just right. I can go to San Francisco to check out the Five Saints Hall. After all, it's a kidnapping and murder case, you have to get to know the place first...

Just then, the phone rang abruptly, and an unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.

Qin Jin then answered the call: "Hello?"

"Qin?" The voice on the other end of the phone was deep and capable, but the tone was very familiar—

It was the same voice I heard in the police car that day—the officer who complained to the chief and demanded a reward; he must have held a high position.

"It's me," Qin Jin said calmly.

"I am Frank Dawson, the head of the Homicide and Major Crimes Unit at the Canyon Precinct. I am now officially informing you that you have been hired by us through a special exception—report to the precinct immediately, to the Homicide and Major Crimes Unit office on the second floor."

The command was so concise and to the point that it didn't even give Qin Jin a chance to ask "what's going on" before the call ended, leaving only a blank busy tone.

"Damn it..." Qin Jin sighed, helplessly turned the car around, and drove towards the Canyon Branch.

The gray building of the Canyon Precinct looked somewhat solemn in the afternoon sunlight.

Qin Jin gave his name and purpose at the door. The guard seemed to have been notified and let him through immediately, pointing out the direction of the Major Crimes Division on the second floor.

After going upstairs, there was a sign for the Homicide and Major Crimes Department on the left. Qin Jin pushed open the door and was greeted by a smell that was a mixture of caffeine, tobacco, sweat and trouble.

The offices on both sides of the corridor had their doors ajar. Inside, the sounds of telephones ringing, keyboards clicking, and hushed conversations rose and fell. Plainclothes detectives hurried about, and the entire space was filled with the tension of a hunt for prey.

Qin Jin walked down the corridor and found the room with the "Supervisor" nameplate on it, then knocked on the door.

A short, forceful voice came from inside: "Go in!"

Commander Frank Dawson pushed open the door and turned around.

He was around fifty years old, with short, gray hair that stood up like steel brushes. His square face was as if it had been carved by a knife and axe, with deep nasolabial folds. His sharp eyes, honed by years of experience, were fixed on Qin Jin without any politeness.

He rolled up his shirt sleeves to his elbows, revealing his muscular forearms, and exuded an aura of steely resolve that seemed to linger from the smoke of battle.

"Officer Frank? This is Qin Jin." Qin Jin seemed somewhat uninterested.

Supervisor Frank's gaze swept over Qin Jin with a scrutinizing look, and he nodded, getting straight to the point:

"It's me. You'll be starting work here tomorrow. There's a case that requires your expertise."

Professional knowledge? What professional knowledge? Experiences as a zombie...?

Qin Jin was a little stunned by this unexpected order. He steadied himself and frowned:

"Supervisor Frank, this... I'm sorry, I don't quite understand. The assessment results haven't been released yet, and according to regulations, I seem to need to undergo 24 weeks of training at the police academy..."

"You're excellent, I've made an exception and admitted you! Besides, all this training is completely unnecessary!"

Dawson waved his hand, his movements crisp and decisive like a soldier's:

"There's a case that requires your knowledge of Eastern customs, so... I've already sent someone to handle the paperwork, you don't need to worry about it."

What the hell!

Qin Jin immediately realized, "Oh no!"

The whole thing is very clear: the murder and major crimes commander, who was already overwhelmed by the paper bride, saw himself as a lifeline and brought him over without thinking twice.

How did this hot potato end up in my hands? What about all that work I did the past few days? Was it all for nothing?

He immediately thought of a reason to refuse, but he had to try it regardless of whether it would work:

"Chief Frank! Thank you so much for your exceptional promotion! But... Deputy Chief Logan Miller specifically instructed me that he hopes I can start as a patrol officer and gradually familiarize myself with the job..."

"Yes, Logan!" Frank interrupted Qin Jin's struggle, his lips twitching.

"How do you think I knew about your situation? Without Deputy Director Logan's recommendation and guarantee, do you think I would dare to make an exception and hire a newcomer like you?"

Qin Jin's heart sank! It was actually... Logan who ruined his low profile!

"Alright, that's settled then!"

Dawson had no intention of giving Qin Jin any further time to defend himself; he stood up and walked towards the door.

"Come on, I'll take you to Group Two. From now on, you'll work with them—start by looking at the cases. I'll have someone handle the rest for you!"

And so, Qin Jin's low profile completely collapsed due to a series of unforeseen events and the machinations of others!
