Chapter 77 Abandoned Morgue
In the cold night wind, Qin Jin and Constanze followed the nauseating stench and the sticky traces left on the ground like hunting dogs.
After escaping the holiday home, the viscous black water composed of wriggling hairs did not disappear into the deep mountains as expected. Instead, it strangely took a large detour and headed straight for the desolate forest town at the foot of the mountain.
"Is it going to town?"
Constantine's voice sounded hurried as he sped along, the Holy Cross knuckle duster in his hand gleaming coldly in the dim moonlight. "What's there left for it to go? Everyone's almost gone!"
You'll see when you get there!
Qin Jin's voice was low and cold. His senses were heightened to the extreme in the darkness, and the trail of the stench was like a clear, poisonous thread in his consciousness.
Soon, the outline of the dilapidated town appeared in the moonlight. It was deathly still, with only a few scattered dim lights flickering in the distance, like the eyes of a dying person.
The pungent, fishy stench led them to a similarly dilapidated but rather large building, with faded blue cross markings still visible on the peeling paint.
This used to be the town's community hospital, but now it's also deserted.
The gate was long since decayed, and it stood crookedly open, revealing a bottomless darkness inside, like a giant maw ready to devour its prey.
Without the slightest hesitation, the two slipped inside.
The hospital was in a mess. Abandoned medical equipment, scattered medical records, thick dust, and rotting leaves covered the floor and corridors. The leaks and decaying ground added to the chaotic atmosphere.
But Qin Jin quickly located the source of the aura. After passing through the filthy and corrupt hall, it rushed into a security door leading underground. The stairs inside had slightly fewer fallen leaves, but...
When Constantine broke the glow stick and shone it on the stairs, fresh footprints appeared, seemingly from only a few days ago.
It seems that the search team that Congressman Michael hired either overlooked this hospital or the entire town, which is why they ignored such obvious signs.
They quickly descended the cement steps covered in slippery moss.
The air underground was even colder and damper, mixed with a strong musty smell and the pungent odor of residual disinfectant. Finally, we arrived at a corridor lined with rooms bearing various nameplates, ending at an iron door.
Morgue!
The last area the stench reached was the morgue.
Without hesitation, Qin Jin walked over, pushed open the door, and the layout of the morgue was clearly visible in the eerie green light of the glow stick.
The space here is small, with two rows of old-fashioned mortuary cabinets that look like huge metal drawers against the wall. Without power, the cabinets are just damp.
Most of the cabinet doors were tightly closed and rusted, while others were ajar, revealing dark, empty spaces inside.
The air was thick with the scent of death and the cold metallic smell of the past. The stench that had been lurking there reached its peak, but then strangely lost its direction, as if it had vanished completely once it entered.
Constantine held up a glow stick and cautiously scanned his surroundings.
Qin Jin then walked to the inner side, where the morgue cabinets seemed somewhat different. Although the cabinet doors were still ajar, Qin Jin sensed something amiss—
Without hesitation, he reached out and grabbed the first cold handle, pulling it outward with all his might!
The heavy metal drawer slid out with a jarring clang, kicking up thick dust that danced in the dim green light.
There was a person lying in the morgue!
It was a young girl, her eyes closed, her face as pale as plaster, her lips bloodless. She lay quietly on the cold metal plate, like a sleeping corpse.
"Sarah!" Constantine immediately recognized one of the missing persons.
Qin Jin didn't stop moving and quickly opened several other morgue cabinets next to him that also showed signs of freshness!
"Amy!"
"Lina!"
All three missing girls have been found!
They were like carefully arranged specimens, sleeping in a cold metal drawer!
And that's not all!
After checking all the morgue cabinets, they found two unfamiliar girls...
There were only five women; Mark and Ethan were missing, and each girl's situation was roughly the same:
Everyone's heads were bald, their scalps exposed to the eerie green light, covered with countless tiny, blood-red pores!
This appearance is exactly the same as the shadowy girl found in the holiday home.
Their chests were rising and falling very faintly, proving that they were still alive, but their breaths were as weak as a candle flickering in the wind, and they were in a deep coma, whether caused by evil magic, drugs or something else was unknown.
"They're all alive, but the situation... isn't good!"
Constantin examined the girl's condition. "She's only slightly better than the first one; extremely weak and could die at any moment!"
"Contact Catherine and have her drive over with the shadowy girl, Alessa, and the first-aid kit!" Qin Jin pulled out his phone.
"I'll contact the chief and ask him to arrange for a medical helicopter to rescue them!"
The two immediately split up and made phone calls. Although it was the middle of the night, Director Edward quickly picked up his phone: "Hello, Qin! Any findings?"
"We've found them," Qin Jin said quickly. "They're in the abandoned councilor's house next to the holiday home. Amy, Sarah, and Lina are there, along with three other unidentified victims, making a total of six, all young women. They're seriously injured and breathing very weakly. I'm preparing to give them adrenaline injections. The rest will have to be coordinated by you, Chief."
"They found him?!"
Chief Edward cried out in surprise, his attention immediately drawn to this crucial order—
As long as we can find the person, we can give an explanation to Congressman Michael, and the matter will be considered closed. As for rescuing the person... yes, yes, we must hurry up with this, after all, rescuing someone alive is completely different from finding a body.
"Yes! But I need manpower to conduct a thorough investigation; the investigation is not over!" Qin Jin acknowledged Chief Edward's surprise and then continued:
"I need a medical helicopter, the kind with a doctor on board, and also manpower to assist!"
"Okay, I'll make the arrangements! You guys guard the site, I'll mobilize the helicopter immediately, as for assistance..." Director Edward paused for a moment:
"I'll contact the nearest city right away and send you county police. If you need our people, I can arrange that too."
"No need, the regular kind is fine."
After all this was done, the morgue fell into an even deeper silence.
The eerie green glow illuminated five pale, strangely bald faces and a cold metal cabinet, now just waiting for Catherine to arrive with the first-aid kit.
"Where did those two men go?" Constantine looked at the unconscious girl in front of him. He had just overheard Qin Jin's conversation with the bureau chief:
"How about I go to the hospital to check? Maybe we can find it?"
Qin Jin did not answer. His lazy smile was tinged with wariness, and the curve of his lips carried a hint of caution.
"They're not important, John! Honestly, what big deal do you think these two could be, since they're not involved in the prize money or any sorcery? They're definitely dead!"
"Oh, so you're looking for something else?" Constantine paused for a moment:
"You want to find that black thing completely and eliminate it?"
"Hmm, we must find it!" Qin Jin said thoughtfully.
"It's not that I'm not going to let it go, it's just that this matter is far from over. I don't know what else it's up to! The hair monster has disappeared, the purpose of the black magic is unclear, and I don't even understand why these girls are alive..."
He chuckled softly twice, his voice carrying a knowing glimpse:
"Most importantly, I feel like this is all too easy, like... it deliberately brought us here!"
"I'm really curious about her true purpose!"
