American Zombie Detective

Chapter 8 Old Partners and New Identities

"You are...my father's friend?" Qin Jin's face showed surprise and a hint of astonishment, but he immediately became warm and welcoming. "Please come in and sit down..."

As he spoke, he warmly ushered Logan and his partner into the living room.

Logan strode in, his gaze sweeping over the simple living room as usual, before being immediately drawn to Alessa, who was curled up on the sofa.

"Hey! Who is this cute little angel?" Logan asked curiously, his tone softening.

Qin Jin smiled casually: "This is my sister, Alessa Qin," he said, then went over and patted Alessa on the shoulder.

"Alessa, say hello. This is Uncle Logan, Dad's friend."

Alessa slowly raised her head, her large, unwavering eyes calmly looking at Logan, before lowering her head again to stare at the tablet.

Logan paused for a moment, then burst into laughter, a laugh tinged with mischief and male banter:

"Wow! That old fellow Qin Han! He's really... still got it! Hahaha! How come I didn't see him when I went to Arland a few years ago?"

Qin Jin lowered his voice and whispered, "They... well, they didn't get married, and they weren't together for long. Then, there was a car accident, and Alessa went to live with my dad, and now she lives with me... She has a rather unique personality; she's a little autistic. Please don't mind..."

Logan's teasing smile vanished instantly, replaced by an expression of understanding.

He nodded, even crouching down slightly to align his gaze with Aresa's, and said with a gentle smile:

"Hello, Alessa. I'm Uncle Logan, a good friend of your father's. It's nice to meet you."

Aresa remained unresponsive, as if he were invisible.

Logan didn't take it to heart, stood up, and smiled understandingly at Qin Jin: "It's alright, kids have their own personalities."

The topic returned to Qin Jin.

Logan deliberately moved away from the living room and sat down at the dining table. Looking at Qin Jin's face, which was almost identical to his father's, Logan started to chat:

"Back in Chicago, your dad and I...were practically...wiping out the entire mob! Once, your dad was shot in the stomach, and I carried him out of a pile of corpses, shoved him into a car, and rushed him to the hospital. Five minutes later and he would have been dead...tsk tsk, it was incredibly dangerous!"

Qin Jin's eyes twitched as he listened, inwardly cursing:

Bullshit! That time you were the one who got hit in the leg by a stray bullet. I was the one who carried you, a strong man weighing over 180 pounds, down from the second floor and stuffed you into the trunk! You really dare to brag!

He suppressed the urge to roll his eyes, forcing a mixture of gratitude and admiration onto his face:

"Oh my god... I see! Thank you, Uncle Logan!"

"It's alright, Qin Han and I are family!"

Logan patted Qin Jin's shoulder hard, so hard that even the zombie felt a weight on his shoulder. He winked and smiled.

"Speaking of which, you should thank me... Back then, your dad was madly pursuing our policewoman Merris, but your Aunt Merris insisted on being with me. Oh dear, you know... If it weren't for me, your dad might have succeeded back then, and you wouldn't be here now, right? Hahahaha—"

Have some shame, Logan!

Qin Jin recalled the days when Logan fawned over Merris, and Merris constantly fawned over him. He felt an overwhelming surge of anger welling up inside him, so he desperately tried to change the subject to avoid unleashing a torrent of abuse on Logan.

"Uh, really? Hahaha, that's quite something... By the way, Uncle Logan, I just got here the day before yesterday, what brings you here...?"

"Oh, this? I moved to Los Angeles last year and am now in charge of the detective department. I'm in charge of this police officer evaluation, and I happened to see your name yesterday, so I thought I'd come and check it out... Haha, don't mind me..."

Qin Jin now understood. They were asking how Logan ended up here; it turned out he'd moved from Chicago to Los Angeles – what a surprise…

But that's alright, with Logan around, my own review process shouldn't have any problems!

"By the way, Qin," Logan said, as if remembering something, "where's your dad? Is he still working as his carefree sheriff in Arland? I tried calling him a few days ago, but I couldn't get through. I asked around in Texas, and they said he resigned. What happened?"

"I see!" Qin Jin understood.

It's likely that Logan called Qin Han, couldn't reach him, and then searched for Qin Jin's information online, only to discover that he had applied to the Los Angeles Police Department...

I just don't know what he wanted with Qin Han!

Qin Jin's tone and expression were perfectly controlled, a classic American father-son relationship:

"Yes, Dad quit his job. He said he's going to travel the world and also go back to China, saying he wants to see his roots..."

"Oh, I remember now, the old man has said it many times, he wants to go back and visit. Tsk tsk, I'm so envious!" Logan suddenly realized, his expression shifting to one of regret and a hint of envy.

"He knows how to enjoy life better than I do, really... oh dear..."

Logan rambled on for a while, but didn't get to the bottom of anything. It wouldn't normally be a big deal, but since everyone was hungry, he had no choice but to try and probe.

"Uncle Logan, did you need to see my dad? When he calls me, I'll have him call you, okay?"

"Sure, have your dad call me. I have something... well, something personal I need to talk to him about!"

Logan stood up, took a business card from his pocket, and handed it to Qin Jin: "Don't worry about the practical exams later. As long as you have half the skill of your dad, I guarantee you'll pass easily! If you need anything at the LAPD, just let me know. Your dad's not around, I'll protect you!"

Qin Jin gratefully accepted the business card: "Of course! Thank you, Uncle Logan!"

Logan patted Qin Jin on the shoulder again, then took his leave with his partner.

Qin Jin stood by the window, watching the car slowly start moving. At the same time, Logan had already dialed a number on his phone. After the car reversed, Logan waved to Qin Jin, who smiled and responded.

Just then, Alessa's voice suddenly rang out from the side; she had appeared there without anyone noticing.

"Who is Dolly Miller?"

"Logan's daughter, I suppose..." Qin Jin replied instinctively, then instantly realized:

"What did you hear?"

"He called Merris and said Dolly Miller would be satisfied... What does that mean?"

Qin Jin began to experience a silent headache. Logan's inexplicable visit, coupled with the mention of his daughter's name, gave him a strange feeling—

Is this old man here to help his daughter find a blind date?

Considering Logan's burly and imposing appearance, although Meryl's beauty is undeniable, the combination of the two might just create a perfect pairing!

Logan had to personally intervene, which shows how terrifying Dolly must have looked.

Qin Jin immediately made a decision: he would never, under any circumstances, join the police department. He was determined to completely avoid any contact with Dolly and absolutely not fall into Logan's trap.

He even felt a sharp pain in his tooth roots... What the hell is this?!

The burning sensation deep in their stomachs began to take over again. Qin Jin and Ares exchanged a glance. "Let's go, let's eat first."

He grabbed the car keys:

"Let's go to the nearby Chinese community first and get this meal."

The old Dodge roared out of the Springgrass community, and Qin Jin drove toward the nearest Asian community.

As you drive into this narrow street, the familiar aromas of various spices and ingredients begin to fill the air.

Finally, the car stopped in front of a sign that specialized in selling live poultry. The shop was filled with all kinds of chickens, ducks, pigeons and other poultry, both at the entrance and inside.

The shop owner was a lean, buck-toothed Chinese man who was watching TV in the shop with a cigarette in his mouth. When he saw a customer come in, he immediately greeted him with a smile.

"Boss, how much for a live chicken?" Qin Jin asked directly in Chinese.

The buck-toothed boss blew a smoke ring and answered in heavily accented Mandarin:

"Six dollars and fifty cents each. How many do you want?" He paused, then added, "California has regulations that prohibit the private slaughter and removal of live poultry. Processing costs ten dollars each, including killing, plucking, and gutting."

Qin Jin didn't waste any words; he simply took out a wad of cash from his pocket, counted out four twenty-dollar bills, and stuffed them into the shopkeeper's hand.

"Four of them, I'll take them and pack them myself."

The buck-toothed boss clutched a thick wad of cash, his eyes flickering.

It wasn't that he wouldn't sell, but he was assessing whether the other party would pose a risk. After all, sting operations in the United States were not uncommon. After hesitating for a moment, he finally quickly stuffed the money into his pocket.

"Alright, young man!"

He quickly tied the feet of the four chickens, stuffed them into a thick black plastic bag, handed it to the boy next to him, and then pointed towards the light sign at the end of the street:

"Go and wait there for a moment, someone will bring it over."

After saying that, he lowered his voice again, with an unspoken understanding in his tone:

"But let me make this clear from the start: if anything happens, I won't know anything."

Qin Jin nodded and was about to leave when the boss called out again, "Hey, young man, wait a minute."

Alessa's face tensed up slightly, and the Frankenstein's monster in her hand became somewhat deformed from her grip. Qin Jin gently patted her shoulder, turned his head, and asked, "Hmm?"
