Chapter 17 Talent

Flames engulfed the three-story building and spread outwards, eventually plunging the entire neighborhood into chaos.

The fire spread rapidly.

It was already past midnight when the fire was finally extinguished.

Patrol Hall.

A person pushed open the door and sat down opposite Carl, handing him a steaming cup of milk coffee.

"This matter has a great impact; even the city lord was alarmed, so it's inevitable that we'll have to ask about it several times."

The person who came had a gentle voice:

"You don't need to worry. The matter has been investigated and clarified. It has nothing to do with you. You should be able to leave soon."

"Sigh!" Carl sighed.

"Who would have thought that it would be a stronghold of fire-stealers?"

Since returning to the patrol office, he had been questioned separately several times, so he was not surprised this time either.

"yes!"

The newcomer leaned back, half-hidden in the darkness, his face barely visible in the kerosene lamp light, and asked:

"When Miles died, only you and Dinah were there. Did you find anything on him?"

"Or rather, did you find anything? After all, you're expected to regain consciousness before Diana."

Ok?

Karl frowned and looked up at the person who had come.

In the dim light, the other person's features seemed veiled in mist, making them impossible to discern no matter how hard one tried.

After a moment's thought, Karl spoke:

"I passed out after activating the hidden blade. When I woke up again, there was a huge fire nearby. I was in such a hurry to escape that I didn't have time to search for anything."

"Yeah?"

The newcomer rested his chin on his hand and said:

"You said Miles' methods were strange, yet he was killed by your hidden arrow piercing his throat. That seems illogical."

"Heh..." Karl chuckled softly.

I don't think so.

Compared to killing someone with a hidden dart, the method Miles used was truly incomprehensible.

"All right!"

The visitor sighed, straightened up, took out a book, placed it on the table, and gestured to Karl:

"Please take a look at this book and see if there are any problems. If there are no problems, you can leave."

"Book?"

Karl looked surprised, then examined the book carefully.

This is a leather book about two fingers thick, with a brownish-yellow cover, bound with two dark red silk threads.

There is a picture on the front cover, but the image is somewhat blurry.

Upon closer inspection, the image appears to depict a woman holding a wooden staff, her features obscured by a light mist.

Karl didn't open the book; instead, he stared at the woman in the picture, lost in thought, his brow furrowing unconsciously.

"call……"

A gentle breeze seemed to drift into the enclosed room from somewhere.

The kerosene lamp flickered gently, and the woman on the book cover seemed to move as if she had come to life.

"Come!"

"come over!"

A murmured sound rang in my ears.

Karl looked bewildered as the woman on the cover stepped out of the mist.

As they got closer, the woman's features became clearer, and even the tiny pores on her cheeks became clearly visible.

But strangely enough...

The woman's specific features and overall appearance remained unclear; all that could be seen was a pair of eyes getting closer and closer.

"Splash..."

A gentle breeze rustles through the forest and fallen leaves, carrying a strange sound to the ears and the fresh scent of the mountains and fields to the nose.

Mountains and fields?

Am I not in the patrol office's room?

"Um!"

Karl shuddered, his eyes regained their clarity, and he found a layer of cold sweat on his back.

"Clang..."

He shoved the wooden table in front of him over and stumbled backward.

"Get out of here!"

"Get out of here!"

"What is this?"

Karl was breathing rapidly, his heart was pounding, and he instinctively wanted to find a handy weapon.

"Snapped!"

"Slap! Slap!"

The figure opposite stood up and clapped his hands lightly:

"Being able to break free from the mental influence of the Wizard's Book shows you're quite talented; no wonder you're resistant to the Banshee's Wail."

He then said:

"Come with me!"

"Leave?" Karl was still in a daze.

"Where to?"

"Go where you should be." The other person put away the books and emerged from the darkness, revealing himself to be a middle-aged man.

"I forgot to introduce myself, Tim Morton. You can call me Tim, intermediate wizard apprentice."

In the spacious hall, dozens of candlesticks were arranged in order, and the candlelight illuminated the entire hall as if it were daytime.

This is the Jaeger family's estate.

Diana stood in the center of the hall with a gloomy expression. She didn't remember how long she had been standing there, only that her legs had gone numb.

"Clang..."

The sound of porcelain shattering came from the inner hall.

"We shouldn't have let her be the patrol chief in the first place. We wasted so much effort, and look at the mess she's made."

"What's the point of saying all this now?"

"How could it be useless? If you had listened to me back then, you wouldn't be in all this trouble now."

"Okay, okay."

"..."

"unlucky!"

The shrill female voice was full of resentment:

"She's wasting family resources and can't get anything done. She might as well find a man to marry so she won't be an eyesore."

"That's enough." The man's voice turned stern.

"She is, after all, my daughter."

"snort!"

"Crackling and popping..."

Once the chaos subsided, a weary-looking man slowly walked out.

"Father!"

"Why!"

Sassoon Jaeger waved his hand:

"Don't stand, sit down and talk."

"Father." Diana's face tightened.

"I tracked them down there while investigating the mummified corpse case. If we hadn't wiped out that group of fire thieves, they might have caused even bigger trouble."

"What you said makes some sense," Viscount Sassoon said, not denying it. He added:

"But this operation resulted in the deaths of three patrol officers and seven civilians, and also affected more than a dozen houses."

"These are all your responsibilities."

Diana lowered her head, unable to refute.

"Commoners are no problem; they die, so be it. At worst, we'll just pay some compensation." Viscount Sassoon sighed.

"But each of those three inspectors has a powerful background, and their elders have already made a scene at the city lord's mansion, so I can't really say anything."

"Your punishment is unavoidable."

"Father!" Diana exclaimed.

"You are my daughter, I will definitely help you." Viscount Sassoon raised his hand, interrupting her:

"It's precisely because you're my daughter that I don't want you to take any risks. If something happens to you, how can I face your deceased mother?"

Diana's eyes reddened.

"remember."

Viscount Sassoon instructed:

"Don't be so reckless in the future, and don't let your loved ones live in fear."

"Yes."

Diana slowly lowered her head.

"I know you're eager to make a name for yourself because you want a life-saving potion to advance your rank to knighthood," Viscount Sassoon continued.

"But you were too impulsive this time."

This operation will not only fail to earn the praise of superiors, but will also inevitably result in punishment, making it a complete failure.

Diana became the chief inspector of the South City at a young age, which is not only due to her own strength, but also to her family background.

Her incompetence will also implicate her family.

"And that one named Karl," Viscount Sassoon said.

"Although he is not very capable, he is still a nobleman. He accused you of framing a nobleman for the sake of merit. Try to appease him."

?

Diana opened her mouth, but hesitated, knowing she was in the wrong.

"Your cousin Will will be visiting Signoria in a few days. Take a few days off to spend time with him."

Seeing his daughter's displeasure, Viscount Sassoon's voice turned somber:

"That's an order!"

"We have to go!"

"Yes." Diana nodded helplessly.
