Chapter 5 Uncle

"uncle!"

Karl pushed open the door and walked out of the room, greeting the stout, squinty-eyed Gergiel.

His gaze then fell on the girl beside the other person, and his voice softened slightly:

"Ivanie, you're here too."

"cousin."

My cousin Evonne was as shy as ever.

Today she was wearing a gorgeous dress, piled with lace, bows, ribbons and flowers. Although it was pretty, it was a bit too flamboyant and not suitable for a girl of ten years old.

The landlady's daughter, Jenny, was also there, greeting the father and daughter. When she saw him come out, she quickly made an excuse to go back to her room.

"Karl".

Gergiel stepped forward, grasped Karl's hands with some emotion, and squeezed out a few tears from his small eyes:

"I heard about your father's situation, it's truly unbelievable... Let bygones be bygones!"

"Did you go to inherit the title today?"

"Hmm." Karl replied expressionlessly.

"My uncle's news came just in time."

My father has been gone for some time now, and this person didn't come earlier or later, but of all times.

Really...

timely!

"Hehe..." Gejir chuckled twice, rubbing his hands together as he said:

"Karl, there's something I don't know if you're aware of. Your father mentioned your marriage to me before."

"He wanted you to marry Evonne, and I agreed."

As he spoke, he nudged Ivani, whose face was flushed and eyes were shy, signaling her to say something.

"Cousin Carl."

Evonne kept her head down, her fingers twirling the fabric of her dress, and raised her voice barely enough to be heard.

"That's just her personality," Gergiel said with a smile.

"Karl, you know that too, but it's okay, things will get better once you're married and get to know each other."

"uncle!"

Karl frowned, then realized why Ivonne was dressed so elaborately—it was about the marriage proposal. He then spoke:

"I went to apply for the title of successor today, but the priest did not approve it."

"Um?"

"what!"

A gasp of surprise rang out.

However, one was worried, and the other was surprised.

"It wasn't approved?" Gergiel instinctively pulled his daughter back, his small eyes darting around.

Why?

Although the baronial titles among the ranks of "Duke, Marquis, Earl, Viscount, Baron" are not legally inherited, they have been passed down from father to son for hundreds of years.

Unless there are special reasons.

If Karl weren't a baron, he couldn't possibly marry off his daughter, whom he had raised for so many years, to him.

"I'm on my way to find my uncle."

Karl took a deep breath, his face showing urgency:

"The priest wants thirty gold coins to prove the Bergman family's piety towards God. I don't have that many. I wonder if my uncle could lend me some?"

"what!"

Upon hearing the mention of borrowing money, Gergiel's expression changed drastically. He pulled his daughter back a step and casually asked:

"How much do you want to borrow?"

"I only have one gold coin on me," Karl said with a wry smile.

"The rest will depend on you, Uncle. But don't worry, Uncle, once I inherit the title of Baron and make money, I will definitely pay you back."

"Twenty-nine gold coins!" Gergiel shouted angrily, pointing at Karl.

"I'd have to be crazy to lend it to you!"

"You won't lend it?" Karl's face darkened.

"Without money, I can't inherit the title, and without the title, I'm afraid I won't be able to organize my wedding with my cousin."

"Hmph!" Gergiel sneered.

"You have neither money nor a title, yet you want to marry my daughter?"

"Well……"

His eyes flickered, then he suddenly said:

"But if you want money, it's not impossible?"

Ok?

Karl raised an eyebrow.

He knew his uncle's character very well; he was as stingy as Grandet. Surprisingly, this time, instead of scaring the man away, he relented, which was quite unexpected.

"Karl".

Gergiel leaned closer and whispered:

"You have no money and no way to obtain the title of baron. Instead of wasting it, you might as well sell it to me."

"uncle!"

Carl was speechless.

"Can titles of nobility be bought and sold?"

"Why not?" Gergiel's voice rose:

"I'll offer fifty...forty gold coins. Take thirty of them to buy the title, and the rest are yours."

"What's left?" Karl asked with a mocking expression.

"Dear Uncle, you're so kind as to still have ten gold coins left for me."

"Of course," Gergiel laughed.

"You will first inherit the title, then marry Yvonne, and after the marriage, transfer the title to my daughter."

"Finally, transfer it to me."

Karl was taken aback.

Don't say it.

This actually makes a certain degree of feasibility.

The Kingdom of Gondor has no shortage of queens and has granted many titles to women, whose daughters, wives, and even parents can inherit them.

"Oh……"

Karl shook his head with a wry smile, a sense of powerlessness rising in his heart.

Dealing with his uncle was even more exhausting for him than dealing with half-dead creatures.

"You may leave. I will not sell the title."

"No!" Gergiel cried out hastily.

"If you feel the price isn't right, we can talk about it again. If forty isn't enough, then fifty will do."

"roll!"

Karl suddenly roared.

A sound like thunder rang in his ears, causing Gaggiel to stagger backward. When he saw Karl's ferocious expression, his heart skipped a beat.

The scars left by the fire, under the influence of anger, resembled a centipede writhing on the face, making one's heart pound wildly.

A robust physique can also create an invisible sense of pressure.

"Fine, I'll leave! Why are you yelling?"

Taking a step back, Gergiel dared not look Karl in the eye, and pulled the somewhat reluctant Ivenne away, muttering to herself as they walked:

"Just like your father, you won't inherit the title. I'd like to see how you live your life from now on!"

"..."

Karl's face was grim until the outer door closed and Gergiel's figure could no longer be seen before he let out a long sigh.

"squeak……"

The side door opened a crack, revealing Jenny's somewhat worried expression:

"Karl, are you... alright?"

"fine."

Carl shook his head, calming himself down:

"I might have to go out again today. If anyone contacts me again, I'll just refuse."

"Um."

Jenny nodded, opened her mouth as if to ask something, but ultimately didn't say anything.

No title to inherit?

What will happen to Carl's life after that?

As Karl approached the street, preparing to hail a carriage, he saw a familiar figure hurrying towards him.

"Ivanee?"

"Cousin Carl."

Evonne was sweating profusely and panting, her skirt stained with mud, clearly having arrived in a great hurry.

She glanced back, then slipped a jade pendant into Karl's hand, lowering her head and whispering:

"I don't have anything else. This is a birthday present from my father. I heard it's worth quite a bit of money."

"Ivanie." Karl was taken aback.

"There's no need..."

"I'm leaving. Father can't find out." Before he could finish speaking, Ivanie hurriedly waved her hand.

"See you next time, Cousin Carl."

She must have sneaked back, delivered the things, and then turned and left.

Watching Ivani walk away, Carl shook his head slightly. The sentiment was rare, but the gift itself wasn't valuable.

Even towards his own daughter, Gergiel was just as stingy.

The jade pendant on his hand was not only made of inferior jade, but the carving was also very rough, like a toy for practice.

After wiping away the dust, Karl carefully put the jade pendant into his pocket and called for a carriage.

"To Rouen Street!"

"Four pence."
