Chapter 277 A Frail Figure in the Wilderness

Chapter 277 A Frail Figure in the Wilderness

I don't know how much time passed.

A soft, wary, and tentative "cooing" sound rang out from the edge of the pit.

Duan Yu, looking slightly disheveled with ruffled feathers but still sharp-eyed, cautiously peeked out from behind a rock.

One of its wings appeared to be slightly injured and was not very agile.

It looked around to make sure there were no more of those terrifying dark gold mechanical monsters before limping to the edge of the pit and looking down at the unconscious and wounded Rolin.

It moved closer, gently touched Rolin's cheek with its beak, and sniffed his scent.

Rowling did not react.

A hint of hesitation flashed in Duan Yu's eyes, then he turned around and let out a long, melodious cry with a specific rhythm in a certain direction.

A moment later, Blue Feather flew over from a distance. It looked better than Broken Feather, but it had also lost quite a few feathers.

Immediately afterwards, Bahama's black figure appeared like a ghost, landing at the edge of the pit, its six eyes looking at Rolin with worry, emitting a low, hoarse groan.

A while later, from a distance, Ellie came running over, her face streaked with tears.

Baha found her and took her to a relatively safe place nearby to hide until it was completely quiet outside before daring to come out and search for her.

Seeing Rowling's pitiful state in the pit, Ellie's tears welled up again, but she forced them back and stumbled to the edge of the pit.

"Mr. Rowling! Mr. Rowling!"

Luo Lin remained silent, with only the very faint rise and fall of his chest indicating that he was still alive.

With trembling hands, Ellie took out the bottle of highly effective healing potion that Rowling had given her from her small, close-fitting cloth bag.

She had been reluctant to use it herself. She carefully pried open Rolin's mouth and poured the medicine in little by little.

After the medicine went down his throat, Luo Lin's breathing seemed to stabilize a little, but his injuries were too severe, and he remained unconscious.

Duan Yu and Lan Yu exchanged a glance, then Duan Yu cried out again, pointing with its beak at Luo Lin, and then at the distant northwest, at the shadowy mountains shrouded in a light mist.

That's deeper in the Sighing Mountains, towards the Forgotten Swamp.

Ellie understood what it meant. It was too dangerous here; they couldn't stay any longer.

We must take Mr. Rowling and leave this death basin as soon as possible to find a safer place for treatment and hiding.

But how could she, all by herself, carry the seriously injured Rolin across this dangerous region?

Duan Yu seemed to sense her predicament. It went to Rolin's side and, with its uninjured wings and head, tried clumsily to nudge Rolin's body, attempting to move him.

Blue Feather also came over to help, gently tugging at the hem of Luo Lin's clothes with its beak.

Baha then took flight and circled around, keeping watch.

Watching the two birds struggle so hard, Ellie felt a surge of warmth and strength within her. She wiped away her tears and nodded vigorously.

"Alright! Let's go together! Let's get Mr. Rowling out of here!"

She placed Rolin's arm on her thin shoulder and, with all her might, combined with the pushing and dragging of the two rainbow-feathered birds, slowly moved the unconscious Rolin out of the pit.

Then, in this Death Basin, ravaged by ancient war and cold machinery, a wounded girl, two equally injured strange birds, and a silent mutated raven dragged an unconscious young wizard as they began to move with difficulty and determination toward the northwest, toward the more mysterious and dangerous Misty Mountains.

The afterglow of the setting sun cast long shadows of them onto the scorched earth, conveying an indescribable sense of tragedy and resilience.

The journey through the wilderness is far from over. And the real test may have just begun.

On the scorched earth, every step felt incredibly heavy.

Ellie felt like her shoulders were about to collapse. Rowling's body was like a lifeless boulder, and she could only move forward little by little by relying on her meager strength and the clumsy dragging of the two injured rainbow sparrows.

Sweat mingled with tears, blurring her vision. Her hands trembled from the exertion, her nails digging deep into her palms.

But she gritted her teeth and remained silent, staring intently ahead at the misty mountains that appeared hazy and distant in the twilight.

Baha hovered slowly at low altitude, its six eyes scanning the surroundings warily.

Its call became hoarse, and its feathers were stained with scorched earth ash, but it still fulfilled its duty as a sentinel.

Broken Feather and Blue Feather were in equally bad shape. Broken Feather's injured wing drooped limply, and he could only hop on one leg to help Ellie, using his head and intact wing to brace against Rolin's waist.

Blue Feather's beak trembled slightly from tugging at the wet, tattered corner of Rolin's clothes for so long, and its beautiful feathers were covered in stains.

There were no words, only heavy breathing and the occasional short chirps of birds that seemed to encourage each other.

The edge of the basin seemed impossibly far away.

Although the skeletal remains of the calamity beasts and the chaotic energy storm behind them gradually subsided, the ominous aura lingering in that area still felt like cold needles, urging them to leave as soon as possible.

As night fell completely, they finally left the utterly destroyed core area and stepped onto the relatively normal edge of the wasteland, which was covered with rubble and cracks.

But it is still a long way from a safe place where people can rest and receive treatment.

Ellie was too exhausted to walk any further.

Her legs buckled, and she fell to the ground along with Luo Lin.

Duan Yu and Lan Yu collapsed to the side, utterly exhausted, their chests heaving violently.

Baha landed on a rock and made a few tired gurgling sounds.

Ellie lay on the ground, breathing heavily, her throat parched.

She forced herself to lift her head and look at the unconscious Luo Lin.

By the faint starlight, one could see the bloodstains and gruesome wounds on his face and body.

The bottle of highly effective medicine he had just received seemed to have only kept him alive until the very end, without waking him up; his injuries were still shocking.

We must find a place to stop as soon as possible, thoroughly treat the wound, and replenish fluids and energy.

Ellie struggled to her feet and looked around.

In the distance, beneath the mist-shrouded mountains, several blurry, light-like lights seemed to flicker.

It's too far away to see clearly, or it might just be an illusion.

Nearby, there was only desolation and darkness.

She forced herself to calm down and recalled what Rowling had taught her.

Finding temporary shelter in the wilderness requires proximity to water, shelter from the wind, and a relatively open view, yet without being easily spotted.

My gaze swept across the area and finally landed on a shadowy spot about two hundred meters to my left, formed by a narrow crevice beneath a natural pile of several huge rocks.

There, you can find shelter from the wind; in the crevices, you can hide; and from the top of the rock, you might even be able to observe your surroundings.

"Go over there."

Ellie's voice was so hoarse it was almost inaudible.

She pointed in that direction, then tried again to help Rowling up.

Duan Yu seemed to understand her meaning, let out a weak cry, struggled to stand up, and once again nudged Rolin with his head.

This time, their movement was even slower and more difficult.

Two hundred meters feels like a distance of thousands of mountains and rivers.

When they finally managed to drag and pull Rowling into the narrow crevice in the rock, Ellie felt as if all the bones in her body were falling apart.

The space inside the crevice was slightly larger than it appeared from the outside, barely enough for two people to lie down. The ground was hard rock, cold and damp.

Ellie carefully laid Rowling down and let him sit against the rock wall.

Then, she immediately began to examine his injuries.

The most serious wound was on his right arm, deep enough to expose the bone. Although the bleeding was temporarily stopped by the medication, the flesh was turned inside out, and there were charred marks on the edges, as if it had been burned by energy.

There were no fewer than a dozen cuts and bruises of varying depths on other parts of his body.

There was also an impact wound on his forehead, which was swollen up quite a bit.

The wound must be cleaned, treated, and re-bandaged.
