Chapter 76 The Obsidian Five

Time flies.

one year later.

night.

Nick Fury sat in the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicopter, surveying the Joint Dark Energy Mission research base below with his only eye.

He's in a bad mood right now.

If it were anyone else, receiving news late at night that there was an emergency at the base and everyone had to evacuate would probably not be in a good mood either.

The Joint Dark Energy Mission Research Base is a base jointly established by S.H.I.E.L.D. and NASA, specifically for researching the Cosmic Cube.

In official documents, this place serves as both the experimental base for Project Pegasus and NASA's space radiation storage center and S.H.I.E.L.D.'s catalyst testing center.

After the plane landed on the tarmac, Agent Hill opened the cabin door and got out first.

Nick Fury followed closely behind and arrived in front of Coulson, who had been waiting by the tarmac since early morning.

How bad is the situation?

Nick Fury wasted no time and immediately questioned Coulson.

"Sir, the worst part is that we don't know the situation."

Coulson took off his sunglasses and quickly replied.

Nick Fury didn't press Coulson further and turned to walk toward the laboratory deep within the base.

"Four hours ago, Dr. Selvig detected that the Cosmic Cube emitted a burst of energy."

Coulson explained the current situation to Nick Fury.

Upon hearing this, Nick Fury frowned and said, "NASA did not authorize Selvig to conduct the test."

Coulson nodded: "He didn't do the test. He wasn't at the base at the time. The Tesseract activated on its own."

"The Tesseract activated on its own?" Agent Hill looked at Coulson with surprise.

Before Coulson could answer, Nick Fury continued, "What energy level have you reached now?"

Coulson replied, "The energy level is still rising, and Dr. Selvig is unable to shut down the Cosmic Cube, so we issued an order for everyone to evacuate according to the pre-set crisis procedures."

"How much longer will it take for everyone to evacuate?"

"The evacuation should be completed within half an hour."

"Faster!"

"Yes, sir!"

Coulson did not follow Nick Fury to the lab and turned to leave.

After Coulson left, Agent Hill, who was following Nick Fury, said slowly, "Sir, evacuation may be futile."

"Should I send them all back to rest?" Nick Fury replied, without turning his head, his back to Agent Hill.

"If you can't control the energy of the Cosmic Cube, it might be useless no matter how far you escape."

Agent Hill continued.

Nick Fury did not intend to continue the discussion with Agent Hill and gave her an order as well.

"You will oversee the transfer of all the prototypes for the second phase."

"Sir, should we really prioritize them now?"

Agent Hill immediately frowned.

"Unless it's the end of the world, we should prioritize these things."

"Move all the equipment below away, and load every component of the second-phase prototype onto a truck and take it with you."

"Even if problems arise here, we must ensure that the second phase of research can continue elsewhere."

Nick Fury turned around and looked at Agent Hill with a serious expression.

"Yes, sir!"

Under Nick Fury's watchful eye, Agent Hill led two soldiers to the warehouse where the second-stage prototype was stored.

The laboratory of the Cosmic Cube.

"Doctor, how is the situation now?"

Upon entering the laboratory, Nick Fury loudly questioned Dr. Selvig, who was examining the Cosmic Cube.

"The Cosmic Cube is being naughty now."

Dr. Selvig replied as he walked toward Nick Fury.

"Are you kidding me?"

"Nick Fury asked."

"This is no joke. The Cosmic Cube has not only been awakened, but it is also moving on its own. No matter what we do, we cannot turn it off."

Dr. Selvig replied with a helpless expression.

"Have you tried turning off all the power?"

Nick Fury blurted it out.

"The Cosmic Cube itself is an energy source. We turn off the power, and it turns back on. If its energy level reaches its peak—"

Before Dr. Selvig could finish speaking, Nick Fury interrupted him: "Isn't this exactly what we need, harnessing the energy of the universe?"

Dr. Selvig shook his head and replied, "The problem is that we can't control it. We're still a long way from utilizing the energy of the Cosmic Cube."

"It is currently releasing interference and radiation, low-energy gamma rays, which are not harmful to the human body."

gamma rays?

Upon hearing that the Tesseract was emitting gamma rays, Nick Fury's mind raced with a name, and he couldn't help but say, "It could be deadly. What about Agent Patton?"

"He's Hawkeye, staying in his lair as always."

Dr. Selvig pointed to a corner of the ceiling.

Following the direction Dr. Selvig was pointing, Nick Fury said into the walkie-talkie, "Agent Patton, come down."

Hawkeye didn't reply. He used the rope he had prepared beforehand to rappel down to the ground and stand in front of Nick Fury.

"I brought you here so you could observe things up close."

Nick Fury said slowly.

"I can see better from a distance," Hawkeye replied.

Nick Fury asked, "Did you see anything activate it?"

Hawkeye shook his head: "No, when the Cosmic Cube was activated, no one entered or left the lab, Dr. Selvig was not there, and no one contacted the outside world or transmitted information to the outside world."

He paused for a moment, then continued, "If anything activated the Cosmic Cube, it wasn't activated by us."

"Not on our side?"

Nick Fury looked at Hawkeye with a puzzled expression.

"In the doctor's words, the Cosmic Cube is a door to the other side of the universe."

"As we all know, doors can be opened from both sides."

As soon as Hawkeye finished speaking, clusters of blue-white energy began to flash around the Cosmic Cube.

As these energies flickered, the entire base shook as if an earthquake had struck.

The sudden tremor immediately drew everyone's attention.

Whether it was Nick Fury, Hawkeye, Dr. Selvig, or the other researchers, they all involuntarily looked towards the Cosmic Cube.

Under their watchful eyes, the Cosmic Cube released a blue-white beam of energy, which shot towards the device on the other side like a laser.

The next second, a circular portal, five or six meters in diameter, from which the starry sky could be seen, slowly took shape.

The portal lasted only a few seconds before it completely collapsed, and blue and white energy swept around like waves.

As the energy dissipated, two figures appeared on the platform where the portal was located.

Nick Fury and his team had never met these two men before.

However, there is one thing they are certain of.

That means both of them are aliens.

Although these two have bodies similar to those of Earthlings, their skin color and appearance are enough to show that they are not creatures from Earth, but rather extraterrestrial beings.

If Roy were there, he would have recognized the two men at a glance.

Or rather, to recognize the couple.

Because they were none other than Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight, two of the Black Order.
