Chapter 37 Two Unsung Heroes

Chapter 37 Two Unsung Heroes

Residents around the Chamber of Commerce spontaneously organized to fight the fire. The brick and wood houses were all close together, and if they burned down, they would be finished.

But they could only splash water from the outside, and were helpless to help those calling for help inside. They anxiously took turns splashing water, and were also distressed by the cries for help from inside the Chamber of Commerce building.

May the God of Light and Order bless them! Prayer is the only thing the surrounding residents can do for those trapped.

"Look! The guards are here!" "They're here so quickly this time?" The guards are the city's force in Valuwana, responsible for both security and fire prevention, a system inherited from the old empire.

Two men, their faces obscured by wet leather cloaks, resolutely rushed into the building, carrying lead buckets of water. Everyone was awestruck by their determined act of going against the flow: "Good! Get them out!" "God help you!" "God bless you!"

Fortunately, everyone's attention and eyes were focused on the Chamber of Commerce building, and they did not notice that the two "security team" members had slipped out of the back door of the hotel across the street, nor did they see that the lead bucket still had the "Green Hotel" sign on it.

Pym has always had bad luck, or at least that's what he thinks, and he believes that bad luck is the reason he hasn't achieved anything so far.

Bad luck seemed to be at play again. After finally getting a job through her uncle's connections, she managed to find an easy job guarding a large chamber of commerce warehouse, only to be caught in a fire!

"What a misfortune!" he murmured, huddled in a corner of the warehouse, tears streaming down his face. Pym had just tried to escape, only to find the flames on the first floor reaching the ceiling, and thick smoke obscuring all visibility. Forced back into the basement warehouse, smoke continued to seep into the door cracks.

The environment became scorching hot, and Pym felt his consciousness becoming somewhat blurred; he didn't realize this was a sign of oxygen deprivation.

Bang! The warehouse door was kicked open violently, and two cloaked men miraculously walked out from the raging flames.

"By the God of Order! You have sent angels to save me!"

"There's a delirious kid."

"Find leather goods first."

The ones who entered the warehouse were the Forest Falcon and the Night Owl. They quickly walked past the warehouse shelves and found the neatly arranged leather goods, which were the goods that Rorschach and his group had painstakingly escorted.

"We'll each wear two pieces of leather armor." Fortunately, these leather armors were made in the style of vests and weren't heavy, allowing them to wear them overlapping.

"Don't take this one. Our brother has already seen it."

"You remember all of this?"

"There are numbers on them. Can't you use your brain when you're on a mission?"

Fires usually spread upwards, so the biggest threat to the basement is smoke, which isn't too alarming. The two then assessed the situation: "It would be best to bring out one or two more items. There are people outside, so we need to be more natural." Finally, their gaze fell on Pym.

"Hey kid, perk up! If you want to live, work with us and listen to us, okay?" Brother Xiao patted Pym's pale face.

Pym nodded at the masked "angel." Owl didn't explain further and began to put the leather armor on him.

The smoke grew thicker and thicker. He scooped out a rag of various colors from the bucket and smeared it on the young man's face.

What's that smell?! Pym wanted to gag, but his face was pressed firmly against a wet rag, and he passed out again. His bad luck kicked in again—this rag seemed to be used for cleaning toilets.

The trailing falcon, wearing leather gloves, dipped a piece of burning wood in a bucket and then picked it up. He set fire to the shelf displaying other leather goods.

"Will there be fire prevention measures?"

Night Owl dragged Pym along and found worn marks on the wall by the door. If Rorschach were here, he could follow the loop to the magic circle for the [Water Creation] spell on the ceiling, but the loop was broken.

"Ha, it's been in disrepair for years, and I can't even see the energy storage loop. Let's go."

Three people, blackened by smoke, rushed out of the fire, greeted by thunderous cheers.

"Success!" "Well done!"

"This injured person needs to take off his coat and outer clothing to check for burns! Someone bring him water to cool him down!"

The duo had been regarded by the crowd as unquestionable professional medical personnel, and they did everything they were told. Night Owl removed Pym's leather armor without any sense of incongruity.

"Hero, there are still people up there!" The speaker was met with accusatory glances from others: How could you be so harsh as to ask someone to go into an increasingly dangerous fire?

Unexpectedly, the two nodded, tucked their leather armor under their cloaks, and had someone help them drench themselves from head to toe: "Everyone, we'll go back in, but we can't guarantee we'll succeed again!"

Everyone was moved, and amidst enthusiastic applause, they rushed back into the fire, then went straight through the first floor and slipped out the back door into the alley.

"Why do we have to go this way? We almost couldn't find the little door!"

"With so many people watching, how can we leave?" Even a scroll with [Elemental Resistance] cannot completely insulate against heat; it can only completely resist burns of about 60 degrees Celsius.

"Next, we need to find Brother Rorschach. The cipher code the boss gave him is..."

Accompanied by the urgent sound of copper bells, the real guard carriages arrived late. The main body of the fire truck was a huge water tank, with a manual water pump on top.

"So they weren't security guards after all!"

"They are heroes who spontaneously rescued people!" "Heroes who left their names!"

Reporters from the newspaper also arrived at the scene: the fire at the nationally renowned Chamber of Commerce building was certainly newsworthy, but now the reporters had discovered even better news material.

"Gentlemen of the security force, please rescue our hero!"

"Sir reporter, this is the young man who was rescued by those two. Come and interview him!"

The reporter walked up to Pym, lifted the rag covering his face which was covered in charcoal black, and immediately smelled an indescribable odor.

Pym opened his eyes and looked up to see blue skies and white clouds. I'm safe! He almost cried, but dehydration prevented him from doing so.

A smirking, obnoxious man was squinting at him, and Pym heard him say, "How does it feel to be rescued by a hero? Can we talk?"

On the fifth day of this ten-day period, Rorschach only had morning classes. He got up from his assigned teachers' dormitory, where the Valuana Morning Post was stuck in the doorknob.

"Who delivered this? The tower? An apprentice?" Rorschach asked, eating breakfast in the restaurant while reading the newspaper. Apprentices around his age didn't read newspapers, but modern people who had lost their cell phones had an obsessive need for information, and the newspaper offered some solace.

"The Lowe Chamber of Commerce building is on fire, and an unsung hero saves people from the flames?" The newspaper couldn't afford to hire a sorcerer to create an image, nor did it have a camera. Instead, it featured a front-page headline and an illustration of the Lowe Chamber of Commerce building on fire.

"It's well drawn; the perspective is all there."

Wait, the Lowe Merchant Guild? Rorschach looked over: "All inventory was destroyed in the fire, resulting in heavy losses. The Lowe Merchant Guild has announced a postponement of the redemption of this quarter's commercial drafts."

Could it be that everything I was escorting has been lost? Thinking of the complicated background of the Chamber of Commerce, the young man sensed a hint of conspiracy.

Rorschach continued reading: Two mysterious heroes rushed into the fire and rescued a young man, but all the others who failed to escape perished, and the nameless hero disappeared without a trace.

What a lucky kid! Rorschach turned the page.
