Chapter 614 This is really possible
Chapter 614 This is really possible
Rorschach and Humboldt were both very busy people who hadn't had a moment of leisure in a long time. Now they could catch their breath and shift their attention from the common fate of all intelligent beings to a pot of cheese.
"These mushrooms are heated up, you can try them."
"Oh, thank you."
"It's a bit too dry. Move aside, I'll add some wine."
The four of them were dining, and Libs was the only lady. The other three men acted like gentlemen, taking good care of her. In fact, the other three didn't really need the food anymore; they just occasionally chewed something to have some flavor. Most of the time, they drank, talked, and treated the meal like a hotpot, leaving Libs as the sole recipient of service.
"It's so cold." The woman, who was temporarily the most powerful in the world, shrank her neck. Because the pot was precisely heated by Richard, there was no extra heat to warm the people eating, and now the cold wind was getting sharper and sharper, even if it couldn't pour into the carriage in large quantities, it was still constantly taking away the warmth.
Upon hearing this, Luo Xia snapped his fingers, and the chill vanished instantly.
Libs, feeling cold, noticed the unusual sight outside the window. Heavy snow was rapidly falling, followed by a fog obscuring her view.
A vulgar remark, unbecoming of a lady or aristocratic upbringing, slipped out: "Damn it, it's snow!"
The other three diners, being more resistant to cold, were completely unaware of the unusual weather while drinking and chatting, but it was only after Lips that they became aware of it.
Rorschach asked, "Where are we?"
Richard estimated, "Six hours have passed. We've covered half the distance. However, this route initially heads due north before turning east, so we've already reached the northern border of the Empire."
But this is late spring, around the summer solstice, and the biting cold and snow in May are truly "unbelievable".
"Perhaps it's because the First Flame went out." Master Humboldt thought of the most likely answer: "In the past, the Tower of the First Flame has been using the heat emitted by the flame to regulate the climate of the area where it is located."
"Although it did not change the overall cold environment of the north, it did block the cold currents from further north, from the permafrost sea. With the existence of the First Fire and the active horizontally distributed geothermal clusters, the Firebearers created an invisible barrier, preventing the northern part of the Empire from falling into extreme cold."
"So the magic tower can also regulate the climate!" Libus was surprised, then felt regretful: "However, I only found out now. Perhaps others in the empire are unaware of the Tower of First Flame's contribution."
Speaking of this, Humboldt said with some regret: "No, those lords and emperors should at least have heard of it; it was one of the agreements between the Empire and the Senate in the past."
"Just as our Forest Tower assists the Empire in managing agricultural affairs, the Tower of First Fire and the Tower of Arcane Arts within the Empire also undertake certain obligations. This is why the guild can exist in the Empire and why guild members have enjoyed privileges in the past."
"The agreement dates back to the history of the Empire's farmers and minor lords driving out the church. However, in modern times, both sides have gradually downplayed the existence of these agreements, and the Empire has intentionally concealed the details of these histories from the public."
"Furthermore, at the behest of successive emperors and other ministers, the empire's mouthpiece has tirelessly incited the people's discontent with us and with the southern territories."
"But this cold wave is a bit too much." Rorschach didn't think the sudden blizzard outside the car was naturally generated, even though he didn't sense any trace of divine magic or spells in the environment.
"It is indeed unusual," Humboldt admitted. "We can only see the results now. Perhaps continuing north will lead us to the root causes of climate change. I need to inform the Storm Tower."
Richard stood up as Humboldt spoke, the general, the empire's chief mage, and the soon-to-be lord realizing he hadn't fulfilled his duties for some time. He sensed the situation throughout the carriage and, sure enough, the temperature was dropping rapidly everywhere except his own.
Meanwhile, his adjutant was frantically issuing orders: "Have the boiler in the locomotive produce some hot water for them. Gather the soldiers together; more people will help them keep warm, so make the driver slow down."
After giving his initial orders, he prepared to head to Richard's carriage. When he first broke into that carriage, he and the guards had been given the mental suggestion by Rorschach that they should not disturb their superior. Now, the suggestion had lost its effect, and the coercion of the current situation overwhelmed that subtle suggestion.
However, Richard had already sensed the movements of his subordinates and took the initiative to come out.
He immediately cast a spell, and a slightly scorching wind wall condensed and was unleashed in front of Richard. This wind wall was extremely fast, and just as it was about to hit the connecting gate, the carriage door opened in response to the wind, and the temperature of the space instantly rose as it swept past.
He then turned and cast a spell in another direction, ensuring that the entire train was kept warm.
The adjutant was both surprised and delighted: "Sir, you can cast spells!"
"Hmm, it looks like we've left the Empire's magic-free zone," Richard said casually, even though they were still within the woven area of the magic network.
He quickened his pace to other carriages, and heard someone shout, "Turn around! Drive back, or we're getting off!" "Get off!"
Richard's appearance immediately quelled the soldiers' commotion. He remembered the ringleader but did not punish him on the spot. Instead, he reassured them, "We've reached the northern edge of the Empire and just happened to run into a cold front. Don't worry, I'll keep the temperature inside the vehicle warm."
Richard personally inspected all the carriages, and the other passengers, who had recovered from the cold, were completely relieved.
He looked out the window again and saw a blue light beyond the fog. Richard, who was maintaining the temperature, felt his stress lessen considerably.
The familiar barrier was, of course, Rorschach's help; now the entire vehicle was protected as it cut through the wind and snow.
"We have another truck behind us carrying the first batch of supplies, right?"
"Yes."
"We communicated with the vehicles behind us, telling them to slow down and maintain a safe speed. We waited for the trucks at the next stop to distribute some of the winter clothing, blankets, and additional food supplies in advance."
"Inform the next batch of relocated citizens and imperial soldiers about the unusual weather we have encountered, and tell them to prepare more cold-resistant supplies. If the safety of the journey cannot be guaranteed, request His Majesty the Emperor to postpone the entire plan."
"Understood." After noting down Richard's instructions, the adjutant saluted and immediately began to carry them out.
After dealing with all that, Richard returned to his compartment and nodded to Rebecca, who was waiting for him: "It's all taken care of."
Libs felt the warmth and exclaimed with satisfaction, "Magic is so convenient. If only I could cast spells on the outside world, like you just 'whoosh' and solve this awful weather."
"How is that possible?"
Not only did Richard disagree, but Humboldt also shook his head: "This would be a huge undertaking, and it would require finding and solving the source of the unusual cold wave."
"Yes, it is possible."
The ancient sages had demonstrated to Rorschach their earth-shattering power. Inheriting the skills and memories of the ancient sages, coupled with his current strength, Rorschach was confident that he might be able to give it a try and recreate the near-miraculous super-level magic.
