Dark Wizard: Rise! My undead army!
Chapter 23: How to Choose?
Morris gave him a deep look, remained silent for a moment, as if weighing something.
He would never have given a regular apprentice much care.
After all, he had spent decades in the Bone Spire, growing from a wizard's apprentice to a full-fledged wizard, and had witnessed far too many conspiracies and deaths.
It was because he and Cel were considered relatively "stable" and "normal" among the dark wizards, and didn't bully people indiscriminately, that they were assigned the task of recruiting students.
Otherwise, if a wizard with a corrupted mind and twisted personality, corrupted by negative energy, were in charge of recruitment, there probably wouldn't be many of the boys left on this ship.
And this kid in front of me...
He feels there's potential!
He can achieve great things!
If you can "invest" more in yourself and build good relationships, you might reap rich rewards in the future.
Morris looked at Lynn, the young man who had displayed astonishing talent and intelligence on the ship, and finally spoke:
"With your talent, Victor the Skeleton King and Malfa the Soul Weaver will surely vie for you."
He pointed his bone-bladed arm toward the front of the hall, where two of the most terrifying beings stood.
One was a burly figure shrouded in thick black mist, with only two crimson eyes visible.
The other was a woman dressed in a flowing black robe, her face hidden in the shadow of her hood, revealing only a pale chin with a mysterious smile.
Seemingly sensing Lynn's gaze, they both turned their eyes to him.
Seeing that the two had discovered his little trick, Morris lowered his voice even further, almost "drilling" into Lynn's mind.
"By following them, you can quickly access top-tier knowledge about the undead or souls, and you won't lack resources."
Morris changed the subject, his voice carrying a subtle warning.
"But they, especially Victor, viewed their gifted apprentices as the finest 'material' and 'experimental subjects'!"
"Your superior soul may be the perfect base for soul stitching in Marfa's eyes, while your soul and earth talent may be suitable for transformation into the core of the Earth Skeleton Golem in Victor's view."
"Following those two, the mortality rate...is extremely high!"
Lynn felt a chill run down his spine; he had just realized it.
He originally thought that following a mentor in the soul or necromancy school would be good, as the witchcraft he currently possessed consisted of these two schools, both of which were very powerful.
But... compared to my own life, everything else has to take a backseat.
"So, what is your advice, mentor?"
Morris's compound eyes turned toward an inconspicuous corner of the hall.
There sat a middle-aged wizard wearing a gray robe stained with various dirt, with hair like tangled weeds and somewhat cloudy, unfocused eyes.
He didn't even display his symbols or achievements like other wizards; he simply kept his head down, writing and drawing on a bone tablet, oblivious to the noise around him.
"His name is Gregor, and he is known as the 'Hand of All Things'."
Morris described him as "a stubborn...outlier."
"He has been a third-ring wizard for nearly a hundred years, but he has never been able to condense a holy mark and step into the fourth ring."
"Decades ago, he became obsessed with a crazy theory—the 'Death Transformation Ritual'."
"Death and transformation?"
Lynn's heart skipped a beat.
"Yes, Gregor believes that comfort hinders the evolution of wizards. Only when they are infinitely close to death, or even experience a 'death-like' state, can their soul and spirit break free of their shackles, undergo a qualitative leap, and even... enhance their talents."
"He was trying to create a rite that would allow people to experience this state and recover."
Morris let out a sneer that sounded like bones grinding together.
"The theory is very tempting, but in practice... the success rate is infinitely close to zero. He himself almost died several times in the secret rituals he designed."
"Gregor has a wide range of interests, including the undead, souls, curses, transformations, and even elemental magic, but he is a jack of all trades and master of none."
"Because his research is so extensive, he doesn't have many resources for you, nor will he bother to guide you. He adopts a completely 'hands-off' approach to apprentices, which results in the highest survival rate for them because..."
Morris paused.
"He never willingly sacrifices his apprentices, and is even somewhat...averse to trouble. Under his tutelage, as long as you behave yourself, the chances of survival are actually higher than under those two."
"For a genius like you who needs time to grow and doesn't want to be treated as a waste product, this might be a good choice."
"Of course, that's on the condition that you don't participate in that so-called 'death metamorphosis' experiment..."
"I'm just giving you some advice; the choice is ultimately yours. The path of cultivation is never smooth sailing, and this kind of 'free-range' approach might just lead to your quicker demise."
Lynn instantly understood Morris's deeper meaning.
This is an academic research mentor who can only provide basic protection but has the greatest degree of freedom.
Choosing Gregor didn't bring much "guidance" or "support".
However... it will not become deeply bound to the mentor, nor will it become the mentor's "private property".
In this academic atmosphere where "mentors are paramount," Lynn naturally tends to choose this kind of "research fanatic" as her mentor.
As for that insane [Death Transformation Ritual]...
A glint of light flashed in Lynn's eyes. This was not unfounded. Alphonse was a perfect example.
He was on the verge of "death" when he was able to awaken his death talent and his mental strength surged to 15 points!
Hmm... I'm still a bit behind myself.
"Thank you for your guidance, mentor!"
Lynn bowed sincerely.
However, he still planned to look at other professors first, so as to get a better understanding of the various "majors" in the college and the research directions of the professors.
Inside the main hall, there are "light screens" displaying the "factions" to which each mentor belongs, along with their key information.
There are two top mentors in the Necromancer class.
[Skeleton Emperor] Victor: Specializes in skeletal weaponry and the construction of undead armies, advocating "quantitative change leads to qualitative change".
Research Topic: On the Amplifying Effect of Collective Consciousness on the Synergy of Undead Creatures and the Feasibility of Ultimate Warfare Weapons
Research focus: The art of large-scale undead warfare, dedicated to building a highly disciplined and tactically coordinated undead army.
Specific research areas include: war weaponry – the Titan skeleton project, undead array resonance, specialized undead unit design, undead war fortifications, etc.
Victor is the living textbook of undead warfare.
His undead army played a decisive role in the interdimensional wars and was known as the "Mobile Scourge" and the "Interdimensional Killer".
Wherever he went, everything withered, leaving only bones.
For a weaker plane, his arrival is an irresistible natural disaster.
...
【Master of Stitching】Grassa: An authority in the field of flesh and blood stitching, a mad artist who breaks the taboos of life, a pinnacle in the field of bio-modification, who likes to "create" new species.
Research Topic: "Transcending the Boundaries of Life Forms: The Selection of Optimal Flesh Units and Forced Life Transformation"
Research focus: Forced life-altering and ultimate flesh-and-blood weapons, dedicated to "creating" more powerful and "perfect" life forms through violent stitching and alchemy.
Specific research areas include: extraordinary organ transplantation, targeted aberration induction, and the intelligentization of flesh-and-blood golems, etc.
She is also known as the "Desecrator of Life" and the "Creator of Nightmares".
And on the demiplane "Eternal Night Graveyard" where the academy is located, a large number of her "masterpieces" roam.
His masterpieces include the Rotten Hive, the Nine-Headed Dragon, and the Abyss Maw Leviathan.
