Eternal Beast Taming Family

Chapter 12 The Town

The snow weighs down the tree branches, making them droop low.

With a creak.

The wooden gate to the courtyard was opened from the outside.

Chu Shengfan peeked out from the main room to check, and the old man wearing a straw raincoat could only be Chu Jingyu.

He turned back to Chu Qinhui inside the house and said, "Grandpa's back."

Chu Qinhui's tense expression relaxed considerably after a night of tension, and a hint of fatigue appeared on his face.

Chu Jingyu walked a few steps to the doorway, but did not rush in. He first brushed the snow off his body outside the door.

"Brother Chu, how's it going at the mine? Is it already closed?" the village chief asked anxiously.

Chu Jingyu shook his head at him, poured himself a glass of water, moistened his throat, and then said:

"Those people aren't in any immediate danger, but they seem to be bewitched by the guy who claims to be a mountain god. I need you to come with me to town to get reinforcements at dawn."

Hearing that there was no danger, the village chief breathed a sigh of relief and did not object to Chu Jingyu's request. "It is only right, it is only right. In any case, thank you for being willing to go and see, Brother Chu."

Even when he smiled, his face, etched with deep wrinkles, seemed to carry a hint of bitterness.

"Village chief, why don't you go to my room and rest for a bit? We'll set off at dawn. If we delay any longer, who knows what might happen?"

It was late at night, and the village chief couldn't very well ask them to take him down the mountain again, even though he didn't know how he had managed to get up there all by himself.

He glanced at a deck chair nearby, walked over, pulled it to the fireplace, and then lay down on it.

"I'll just rest for a bit, no need to trouble yourself. But Brother Chu, you should rest for a while, it must be tiring to come up and down the mountain like this."

Seeing the village chief's determination, Chu Jingyu instructed Chu Shengfan, "Go and fetch a quilt for the village chief."

Chu Shengfan did as instructed and went into the inner room, but his gaze toward Chu Qinhui was full of disapproval. "You've only just started to feel comfortable, and you're already ruining your body like this."

Faced with his father's stern tone, Chu Qinhui immediately cowered and stood up, saying, "I'll go rest now."

After settling the village chief in, the Chu family compound fell into a deep sleep.

……

The next day, just as dawn was breaking, after breakfast, they went to the village and hired an oxcart.

Chu Jingyu and the village chief hurriedly headed to the town.

Heavy snow blocked the roads, making it rare to see pedestrians.

Upon arriving in town, the two went straight to the mayor's residence.

There are four forces controlling Heyu Town: three families and one leader. The three families are the Liu family, the Zhang family, and the Shi family, and the leader is the town mayor.

The town mayor does not belong to any family; he was transferred from the county seat and seems to come from a large family as well.

So even though it didn't have much of a foothold in the town, the other three families always treated it with great respect.

Chu Jingyu and the village chief arrived at the very center of the town, where the plaque of the Patrol Office hung high above the gate.

The village chief took the initiative to negotiate with the guards lined up on both sides, explained his purpose, and showed them a bronze plaque representing his identity as the village chief of Fuhe Village.

The two waited in the snow for half an hour before someone led them into the patrol office.

However, inside the office building, they were not received by the town mayor, but by a chief inspector in charge of security matters.

The chief inspector was a young man in his thirties, with a fair complexion and no beard. A white crane with long neck and covered in white feathers circled and strolled around him.

The scene of the person and the crane living together is beautiful and natural.

The moment Chu Jingyu and the village chief entered, the chief of security's gaze was fixed on Chu Jingyu, clearly recognizing him as a contract master of the same level as himself.

"You say that a mysterious beast claiming to be a mountain god appeared near Fuhe Village, misleading the villagers into worshipping it? Is this true?"

The village chief volunteered, "I guarantee with my position as village chief that this is absolutely true. Please, sir, send men quickly to rescue them."

The chief inspector fell into thought. "I remember the border around Fuhe Village was under the jurisdiction of the Liu family, right? How could such a dangerous source beast have infiltrated?"

The guard who led Chu Jingyu and the others in bowed and reported, "A few days ago, the Liu family, under the pretext of a clan festival, recalled most of the guards they had dispatched to the outside world."

Therefore, it is possible that some individuals slipped through the net.

Upon hearing that the Liu family was involved, the chief of security, who came from the Zhang family, also became more serious.

"You'll have to wait a little while; I'll go and inform the mayor first."

After speaking to Chu Jingyu and the village chief, the chief of security straightened his clothes, then turned a few corners in the corridor and disappeared.

The white crane glanced at Chu Jingyu and the village chief, then haughtily turned its head and walked into the courtyard, where it slowly danced in the falling snow.

As its wings fluttered, a gentle breeze gathered throughout the courtyard, and the snowflakes on the ground instantly rose up, forming a white wall that obscured all other scenery.

Looking at the white crane that belonged to the chief inspector, Chu Jingyu could tell from the intensity of the energy emanating from it that it belonged to a lower-level alien rank.

Although he was a realm lower than himself, this did not mean that the chief inspector did not have other, stronger source beasts.

About ten minutes later, the chief of security, who had just left, brought a middle-aged man who looked to be in his fifties, with a square face and an air of authority, into the courtyard.

This is the town mayor, an extremely mysterious figure to most residents of Heyu Town.

Chu Jingyu glanced at it briefly, then lowered his head, not daring to look any further.

The town mayor's imposing aura, far surpassing his own, indicated that his level of cultivation was far above his.

Chu Jingyu was vaguely puzzled. No matter how strong Yu Town was compared to other towns, it was still just a town. How could it not only have an eighth-rank noble family residing there, but also a town mayor who had reached the Spirit Rank?

His mind was racing, but the mayor had already taken his seat in the main seat of the room and started to speak.

"The village of Fuhe is being disturbed by external beasts, and the Liu family has failed to properly guard the border, which violates the regulations of our Jingyuan Dynasty. It is necessary to take action against them."

"You two are both witnesses. Zhang Yu, go and order a squad of guards to go see that trespassing source beast."

The mayor's voice was low and deep, his tone carrying an unwavering determination that brooked no argument.

The person standing next to the town mayor, who was also the chief inspector from earlier, clasped his hands in agreement.

Only then did the town mayor's gaze fall upon Chu Jingyu, and his expression softened slightly.

"I never expected to find someone like you in those remote mountains. There are still quite a few vacancies in my town. If you have the capacity, why not come and make a name for yourself here?"

A hint of sadness flashed across Chu Jingyu's face. "It's not that I'm unwilling, but there's a poisoned son at home who can't do without my care. Thank you for your kindness, sir."

The mayor's expression remained indifferent, making it impossible to discern his true thoughts.

"That is indeed a pity. I have only been here for a short time and am in need of my own help. If you change your mind, I would welcome you at any time."

Chu Jingyu's heart skipped a beat. "If the mayor doesn't mind, I have a good-for-nothing grandson who has just become a contract master. He can't do anything fighting, but he can at least help with logistics and medical care."

"Oh, is that so? Young talents are easier to cultivate. Then I thank you, sir, for sending your grandson here."

The two of them complimented each other.

The village chief, standing nearby, was deeply moved. This was just a short trip, and the Chu family, outsiders, had already managed to curry favor with the town mayor. For their village, this meant they were incredibly important figures.

……

When they arrived, it was just Chu Jingyu and the village chief, but when they left, they brought a team of ten guards with them.

The team consisted of ten people, nine of whom were all contract masters, but they were all at the mortal level, which was of little use in the encirclement and suppression of the mysterious source beast.

The most crucial combatant, Chu Jingyu looked at the man walking at the very front.

Chief Inspector: Zhang Yu.
