Chapter 446 With the Snake
By the time Officer Mu realized that the research value of snakes had no direct relation to Qin Ming's current actions, his car had already arrived at the destination.
He watched as Qin Ming opened the car door, his young face gleaming with eager anticipation. Officer Mu sighed deeply.
Now that things had come to this, he took out his phone and sent a short message to the bureau, keeping the wording as understated as possible: "Accompanying Consultant Qin to observe at the fire station, returning to the station this afternoon."
After reporting the incident, he locked the car, put the keys in his pocket, and followed closely behind.
On the training ground, the fire brigade's spring drills are in the live-action simulation phase of snake capture.
Several simulated scenes were set up on the empty cement ground, including a corner piled with clutter, a waist-high bush prop, and a long iron cage specifically for practicing restraints.
Several firefighters in dark blue training uniforms were taking turns working around the cage, while a dark-skinned veteran sergeant stood nearby, his voice booming like a bell, commenting on each person's technique.
Officer Mu had assumed they would simply stand by as spectators and leave after watching. After all, Qin Ming had used the phrase "observe and observe," which meant to watch with one's own eyes.
But he underestimated Qin Ming's "observation" and even more so the enthusiasm of the fire brigade.
When the old squad leader heard that someone from a brother unit had come, and that it was a young man with a special interest in catching snakes, he immediately waved his hand and ordered the logistics department to bring over two sets of spare training uniforms and protective gloves.
Qin Ming took the equipment and changed into it, his movements so swift and precise it was as if he had rehearsed it countless times in his mind.
What happened next was completely different from what Officer Mu had expected.
As latecomers who joined temporarily, they should have been the two most clumsy, but Qin Ming quickly got into the swing of things.
As soon as the old squad leader started explaining the warning signs of snake attacks, Qin Ming beat everyone else to it and gave the answer, his words precise and his logic clear.
The old squad leader paused for a moment, then revealed a set of teeth stained yellow by smoking, and said "Not bad" twice.
Officer Mu stood to the side, his gloves not yet properly on, a bad feeling rising in his heart.
Next came the hands-on practice session. The veteran sergeant took out a black rat snake that was over a meter long and had a fierce temperament and put it into the simulation area. As soon as the snake landed, it assumed a defensive posture and hissed as it flicked its tongue.
Several firefighters who had been in training stepped forward one by one. Some were a beat too slow when they handed over the pliers, and some did not control their strength well when they grabbed the snake's body and the snake twisted it off.
When it was Qin Ming's turn, he stepped forward, took the snake tongs handed to him, and calmly focused his gaze on the snake. Without any unnecessary movements or probing feints, he opened the jaws, pressed down, and precisely clamped the snake's neck with just the right amount of force.
The whole action was completed in one smooth motion. The old sergeant next to him slapped his thigh and shouted a loud "Good!"
Qin Ming straightened up, handed the snake pincers back to the next person, his expression quite calm, as if he were just helping his neighbor carry a bag of potatoes.
Officer Mu looked down at the snake pliers he had just received, then silently returned them to the equipment stand.
Why was he the only one stumbling and making a fool of himself? Officer Mu spent a rather long afternoon questioning his existence.
As the sun began to set and the drill ended, the simulated props on the training ground were put away in metal cabinets one by one, and the firefighters went to the canteen in twos and threes to get their meals. Officer Mu finally finished his escort duties for the day.
Qin Ming remained silent throughout the drive back, and Officer Mu was also exhausted and didn't want to talk.
Once home, Qin Ming couldn't sit still. The moment he walked in, he made a call to Keda's phone watch.
The phone call was accompanied by the sound of whistling wind and birdsong; the video showed that Keda had found the snake!
Qin Ming disregarded the time of day and immediately summoned Little Fatty. Using Little Fatty's skill, he locked onto a reachable location and teleported, thus successfully avoiding a series of potential troubles around him.
After the feeling of weightlessness from the spatial shift subsided, Qin Ming opened his eyes.
Before me lay an abandoned quarry, the exposed rock walls turning a rusty dark red in the twilight, the ground littered with pebbles and withered bushes, and the air thick with dust and the faint, musky scent of some cold-blooded animal.
Before he could even get a good look at the terrain beneath his feet, a huge shadow hung down from the tree branch above.
Qin Ming's heart suddenly raced, and he reflexively took a half step back.
The snake was hanging upside down from the old locust tree directly above, its body coiled around a thick, horizontal branch, its head slowly drooping. The brown and green stripes on it presented a dangerously beautiful gradient in the dim light of the day.
He spent several hours today at the fire station's training ground observing all sorts of snakes, big and small, long and short. He had developed a considerable degree of immunity to the close-up visual impact of snakes, which was why he barely managed not to show any fear on the spot.
The snake stretched its body out long, reaching down from the tree branch, its scales sliding across the bark segment by segment, making a dry, rubbing sound.
It seemed to be measuring something, lowering its body lower and lower until the tip of its tail touched the ground with a snap. Even though its entire body was stretched into an almost vertical line, the snake's head, suspended in mid-air, was still much taller than Qin Ming.
It shook its head, hissed as it flicked its tongue down, and the tongue almost brushed against Qin Ming's forehead.
Keda stood on a broken wooden stake nearby and translated the snake's meaning truthfully: "Gah, it says you're not strong enough and wants to have a go at you. It won't inject venom, but if you get bitten or can't break free, you lose."
Qin Ming hadn't yet figured out a solution to the unexpected turn of events, but Keda was already getting anxious.
He flapped his wings, causing the feathers on his neck to bristle into a fluffy ball, and shouted sternly, "Gaa! How dare you fight my spirit master? It's an unfair victory!"
Qin Ming was shocked by those words. He subconsciously looked down at himself; due to his daily weight training, he was definitely considered strong by human standards.
But before Qin Ming could even explain, "I actually still have some strength," Keda was already arguing with the snake.
He spread his wings to their fullest extent, his long feathers standing on end: "Why don't you fight the duck? What do you mean by 'not a duck making a contract with you'? The duck is stronger than you!"
Faced with Keda's questioning, the snake simply tilted its head slightly to the side and flicked its tongue. Its posture exuded a calm and unhurried demeanor, as if to say, "You are not the one I am testing. There is no point in fighting you."
Qin Ming scratched his head.
Damn, this snake has a brain.
It needs to personally assess Qin Ming's worth to determine whether the person in front of it is qualified.
No wonder he's the kind of guy who says things like, "The world is so big, I want to go out and see it."
In the wild, the basic law of the jungle always prevails, and Qin Ming could roughly understand the snake's needs.
But while I can understand, the reality is that this snake is estimated to be over 2.3 meters long, making it a heavyweight among snakes, and probably very few humans can match that length.
Qin Ming remained silent for a moment, then slowly pulled his hand back from behind his back and gripped the retractable snake catcher in the side pocket of his backpack.
The steel clamps gleamed with a cold, sharp light in the twilight, their serrated jaws meshing tightly.
"If I were to use tools, it would be an unfair victory." Qin Ming swung the snake trap forward, a cold glint flashing in the snake's eyes, causing its head to tilt back slightly.
"But the ability to invent and use tools is itself part of human combat capability. So... how do you plan to compare?"
Qin Ming flipped his wrist, the clamp drew a circle in the air, and locked with a click.
Now is not the time to send friendly signals. He seems to be looked down upon by the snake. How infuriating!
