People in America: My Uncle Don Quixote
Chapter 28 Fools Have Fool's Luck
Over 120 square meters? A 3-bedroom apartment converted to a 2-bedroom?!
This sounds so much better than the one he was looking at!
He took the phone Susan handed him, glanced at the webpage links and pictures on it, and saw the exorbitant monthly rent of $5800.
Li Wei was extremely tempted, but after thinking for a while, he shook his head regretfully:
“I’m very tempted, Ms. Susan,” Levi said, gesturing to himself and Don Quixote, “but I doubt whether I can afford such a nice house—”
"Wait, let me explain first."
Before he could finish speaking, Susan interrupted him by raising a finger.
"I'm a businesswoman, I don't do business that loses money," she said with a smile. "Actually, I think you have a point. Maybe someone deliberately chose this day to target me."
"So?" Li Wei thought she wanted him to be her henchman. "You want us to help you investigate?"
Susan let out a few soft chuckles typical of the wealthy.
"I do have some friends," she said casually. "I can handle this kind of thing myself."
"And if I do find out something," she paused before saying, "I might have to hire another inspector who knows how to do accounting in a couple of days. Didn't you say Don Quixote used to work at JPMorgan Chase, was a graduate of the University of Chicago, and could speak Spanish?"
As she spoke, she pointed to Don Quixote, who was standing by the roadside, trying to duel with a discarded tire.
Li Wei nodded; that was indeed true.
Susan owns more than a dozen properties scattered throughout various neighborhoods in Brooklyn, and it's unrealistic for her to handle everything herself, from collecting rent and maintaining the properties to hosting tenants.
In fact, she has a small five-person company dedicated to maintaining her dozen or so valuable properties. The employees include not only an accountant, but also a supervisor who handles tenant relations and a Mexican-American repairman who doesn't speak English.
"Wait for my news," she said, shoving the business card into Li Wei's hand. "If I really need help, that house can be used as a dormitory for you and your uncle."
“I never said I was going to do any work for you,” Li Wei said. “I still have to go to school.”
"It's nothing, you're just an extra," Susan said, not caring about such trivial matters at all. "Thank you for today."
After saying that, she started the BMW X6 and slowly drove away from the parking lot in the night.
"Looks like Uncle's going to be lucky," Li Wei muttered to himself, watching Don Quixote struggle to pull himself out of the tire. "Is this what they mean by 'fools have good fortune'?"
...
The next morning, Li Wei made two bowls of milk oatmeal, adding two scoops of the protein powder he had won to one bowl.
Don Quixote has been selling his blood too frequently lately; he needs to replenish his protein intake.
Moreover, Ms. Susan's figure looked quite plump, while Don Quixote's figure was as thin as a wild dog in comparison. With a rather wicked sense of humor, Li Wei added another spoonful of protein powder to the oatmeal.
"...So," Don Quixote stirred the milk and oatmeal, which had almost turned into a thick porridge, with a spoon, "what is this?"
"Milk oatmeal," Li Wei said casually, "with the protein powder I won yesterday in it."
"I knew it! This stuff looks about as thick as the one I made," Don Quixote said, taking a spoonful before realizing, "Wait, where did you get this protein powder?"
"A gym near Sunset Park," Levi said casually, "there's a Latino guy who lost to me and then ran around naked."
Don Quixote nearly spat out his oatmeal: "What?!"
Li Wei dodged the attack and said casually, "Calm down. There are so many amazing people in New York, isn't it normal for someone to run around naked?"
"I saw this video..." Don Quixote wiped his mouth with his t-shirt. "You actually managed to beat him? He looks so big."
"I'm naturally strong," Li Wei said casually. "By the way, could you please stop your bricklaying and dishwashing work?"
"Why?" Don Quixote asked instinctively. "If I stop working, what kind of work will I find? There aren't many places left where I can work."
Li Wei tidied up his words, which he had discussed with Susan, and began, "I work in a boutique that caters specifically to wealthy women, and last time I met a rich woman."
"And then? You agreed?" Don Quixote asked excitedly. "You're going to lead your dear uncle—that is, me—to a better life?"
"Stay away from me for a bit, don't spit on me!" Li Wei pushed Don Quixote back onto the sofa with some dissatisfaction. "It's not me, it's you. You have to give me a good life. That rich woman seems to be planning to hire someone."
Then he told Don Quixote about a rich woman named Susan who, while browsing a boutique, casually mentioned that she was planning to hire a new accountant and inspector, and Levi naturally recommended his uncle Don Quixote.
"That sounds like a good fit for me," Don Quixote rubbed his hands, somewhat tempted, "but with such a low credit score, people might not trust me, right?"
"Thanks to your knight-saves-the-witch act yesterday," Levi thought to himself, "she's really interested in you."
Or maybe you slapped him so hard he's made him stupid.
Li Wei didn't say anything more. He finished his milk and oatmeal, threw the bowl into the sink, and went out to work for his part-time job, one after the other, following Don Quixote.
On the subway, Li Wei hesitated for a moment between strength and mental power, but ultimately decided to raise his strength to 3.0 first.
His mental strength of 1.5 is more than enough to handle his current studies, and even getting a scholarship would be a piece of cake.
However, in America, especially in Brooklyn, physical fitness is still more important.
[Strength 1.5] - [Strength 1.6]
With the extra 0.1 attribute point added to Strength, that familiar heat began to spread along Li Wei's spine all the way to his toes and fingertips.
He felt his body expand slightly as his strength increased, then become more compact.
Since he obtained the system, in just over two weeks, his strength attribute has doubled, from 0.8 to 1.6.
The loose short-sleeved shirts that used to be loose are now stretched out by the chest and back muscles, with the fabric at the cuffs clinging tightly to the upper arms, outlining a hard, armor-like silhouette.
Suddenly, the carriage began to shake, and a 300-pound black man lost his balance and crashed heavily into Li Wei.
"Bang!"
Li Wei stood there, not even budging the hand gripping the overhead armrest. On the contrary, the fat black man who bumped into him felt as if he had crashed into a solid pillar. The huge recoil caused his face to contort in pain for a moment, and he fell awkwardly onto the opposite seat with a cry of "Ouch!"
"Are you alright?" Li Wei reached out his hand. "Let me help you up."
Then, to the astonishment of everyone in the subway car, Li Wei simply used one arm to lift the other person's 300-pound body off the ground, as if he were lifting a bag full of cotton pillows.
"Brother..." The black man glanced at the fingerprints on his wrist, swallowed hard, "You're really strong."
Li Wei simply smiled faintly and remained silent.
Today, the manager, Mrs. Dolores, was still not at the Dolores boutique, and there were hardly any customers.
Another day where I can enjoy the air conditioning and steal my salary.
After going through almost all of the high school AP courses, Li Wei got together with Emma, a store clerk who was also of Russian descent, and learned some distinctive Russian swear words.
In New York, you'd be embarrassed to say you live in the heart of the world if you don't know swearing in five languages.
Just as Emma was correcting Levi on how to pronounce "Sukabul!" more like a standard Russian, Levi's phone rang.
Susan called.
