He was tall, but his complexion was not good.
He was wearing a suit and looked no different from the other sports agents here.
As soon as he entered the bar, the Mexican bartender behind the bar recognized him.
"Hey, White!" he greeted. "Long time no see, how are you?"
"Hmm." Huai nodded.
The bartender skillfully poured him a glass of Jack Daniel's with ice.
"Did you watch the Super Bowl yesterday?" the bartender asked casually as he wiped the table.
He asked the obvious question. How could White, an agent specializing in commercial endorsements for football players, not watch the Super Bowl? Besides, he had mentioned Levi's name at least a hundred times in this bar. Everyone knew about his story with Levi, and their past conflicts.
White didn't even glance at the Mexican bartender, didn't reply, and instead picked up his glass and took a sip.
At that moment, a bald white agent who was watching TV nearby turned around, saw White, and his eyes lit up.
"Hey! White!" The bald agent slapped his thigh dramatically. "What a rare guest today! You're here right after the Super Bowl? I thought you were upset after seeing Levi lift the trophy and didn't want to leave the house!"
Several regular customers drinking nearby turned around upon hearing this, their faces showing expressions of anticipation and amusement.
White's temple throbbed, but he didn't show any reaction on his face; he simply took another sip of his drink.
"Hmph, what a joke," White said coldly. "I've been in this industry for over a decade, and I've discovered at least fifty, if not a hundred, sports stars. Why would I be unhappy to see Li Wei lift the trophy? What's there to be unhappy about?"
Upon hearing this, the bald agent chuckled twice and turned to the person next to him.
"Did you hear that? What White just said," he mimicked White's tone, "he's discovered at least fifty, if not a hundred, sports stars—hey, White, what about you now? Still drinking at McCarthy?"
Several people at the bar burst into undisguised laughter.
White's face darkened, but he maintained his composure, holding his wine glass without saying a word.
"But speaking of which," the bald agent changed the subject, "White, what exactly happened between you and Levi? I only heard the gist of it. Didn't you already have your eye on Herman, the principal of Levi's school? How come you, as the first person to try it, didn't sign him?"
White looked at his hand holding the wine glass, and quietly tightened his grip, trying to crush the glass so as to intimidate the annoying old bald man.
Unfortunately, when he squeezed the glass, it didn't budge.
"There's nothing to say," he said in a muffled voice.
"Mr. White, you're a man of high status, so there's not much to say. You're the only one here who can be connected to Levi," another young agent sitting in the corner shouted, raising his glass. "Don't pretend, you were drinking here and talking about it for six whole months, I could recite it by heart!"
He stood up, cleared his throat, and said in a comical voice, "He was so close, so very close! He's just a yellow-skinned monkey, with no precedent of ever playing quarterback in the NFL. And his bankrupt, homeless uncle living in the basement—their whole family isn't even worth as much as four of my tires!"
A burst of laughter erupted from the bar.
Now that Levi has won the Super Bowl, the higher his value is, the more they want to bring this up to repeatedly criticize White.
If Li Wei really gets tricked by White into signing a commercial endorsement contract, wouldn't he be riding on Lady Luck's coattails, earning tens or even hundreds of millions of US dollars a year?
"And there's more!" the bald agent exclaimed, slapping his thigh. "That black guy smashed my BMW! The windshield is completely shattered! And there's a drawing of a dragon on the hood!"
Everyone laughed even louder.
"And here comes the best part," the young agent continued. "White called the police, and the black student filed a racial discrimination complaint in return, forcing the school principal to apologize! Not only did White have to pay for the car repairs himself, but he also had to pay the student $5000 in damages."
"How was the compensation calculated again?" the bald agent asked, feigning ignorance.
"Because he insisted that a Black person did it without any evidence, he was labeled as suspected of racial discrimination!" (75)

The people at the bar burst into laughter.
White's face had turned a deep, liver-colored red.
His face, and the insoles of everyone present.
"That's enough!" He slammed his glass on the bar. "That was so long ago!"
After saying that, he became more and more agitated as he looked at Li Wei's triumphant face on the TV. He roared and took the remote control from the bartender, then changed the channel.
Unfortunately, all the recent topics have been about Li Wei.
I switched to a different channel; it was an interview with Coach Miller.
He switched to another channel, and this time he was stunned. It was Principal Hermann.
"Yes, I have always respected diversity and racial equality," he said in the interview. "Levy is the most outstanding child I have encountered in all my years in the education industry, without a doubt. From the first moment I met him, I believed he could achieve great things..."

White was furious. He never expected that old dog Herman would actually get involved in interviews and spout such nonsense.
I switched to another channel, and it turned out to be an interview with the top commentator, Joe Barker.
"Thank you, Levi, thank you, rugby," he said triumphantly in the interview. "I won a large sum of money, and I will use part of it to promote rugby, and the rest for my family's vacation, etc..."
When asked if he was a staunch supporter of Levi, Joe Barker said unequivocally, "Absolutely. From the moment I saw this young man compete, I had a feeling that he might actually be able to create a record that will never be broken."
Upon seeing Joe Buck, White nearly smashed the remote control in anger.
"Hey, White!" The bald agent, seeing this, seemed to remember something and turned around, calling out cheerfully.
"I suddenly remember," he said, "didn't you say that Levi was bound to lose every single one of his matches since last year?"
"You said 21 times during last season's preseason, regular season, and playoffs that Levi would definitely lose this game," the young agent added, "Honestly, with all this resentment, Levi probably just ignored you like a fart and didn't care at all."
"If you had bought the opposite," the bartender couldn't help but say, "you would have been financially independent by now."
At this moment, everyone burst into laughter, and the atmosphere inside and outside the shop was filled with joy.
Two days later, it was morning in Los Angeles.
In ward 308 of the children's hospital, sunlight streamed through the gaps in the curtains, casting a golden band of light on the white sheets.
Ethan Horton sat back on the hospital bed, his complexion much better than before the surgery, though a cardiac monitor patch was still attached to his chest, and several wires snaked out from under the collar of his hospital gown, connecting to the monitor at the head of the bed.
He had been holding back for three whole days.
For three days, he didn't know the outcome of the game, whether Levi had won, or whether the Giants had won the Super Bowl.
The nurses and the mother seemed to have conspired together; everyone kept the outcome of the competition a secret, and the TV remote was confiscated, supposedly to prevent him from having too much emotional fluctuation that would affect his postoperative recovery.
But today is the third day.
"Mom," Ethan grabbed Rachel's sleeve, "Dr. Weber said during rounds yesterday that I'm recovering very well, and you heard it when you were there."
"Yes," Rachel said, sitting on the edge of the bed and stroking his hair. "That's what he said."
"Can I watch TV now?" Ethan's eyes lit up. "Just for a little while, I promise I won't get too excited."
"Ethan..."
'
"Mom, I really, really want to know the result," Ethan gripped the blanket tightly. "I've been holding back for three days now. I've been thinking about this the whole time I was on the operating table."
"Could you go out and ask Dr. Webber for me?" He loosened the blanket and grabbed Rachel's hand. "If he says yes, could you turn on the TV for me? Just watch for five minutes, no, three minutes, just to find out who won."
"Okay," Rachel patted Ethan's forehead, "I'll go out and ask. You wait here patiently."
"Yes!" Ethan nodded vigorously.
Rachel turned and walked toward the door.
She opened the door, squeezed through the gap, and gave Ethan a smile as she left.
She gently closed the door and turned around.
A group of people were standing in the corridor outside the door.
Li Wei, wearing a dark blue Giants hoodie, stood at the doorway.
Behind him is Kim Ha-eun, holding a cell phone.
Chen Haisheng stood to Li Wei's right, holding a folded dark blue jersey and a white Nike shoebox in his arms.
Behind them were more than a dozen reporters and photographers from ESPN, FOX, NBC, and The New York Times. They each carried cameras and recording equipment, but everyone was extremely quiet at that moment. No one spoke and no machine made a sound.
Before setting off, Kim Ha-eun had informed all the media that once inside the ward area, all conversations and equipment noise were prohibited, silent shutters were to be used throughout, flash photography was not allowed, and no questions were to be asked of the children.
When Rachel saw Li Wei smiling, her eyes instantly welled up with tears.
Kim Hae-eun had been keeping in touch with her these past few days, and she knew Lee Wei would come, but when the moment actually happened, the impact was still so strong that she almost couldn't hold back her emotions.
"Ms. Rachel," Levi nodded slightly to her and said softly, "Is he ready?"
Rachel took a deep breath and nodded vigorously.
"You can go in now," she said.
Li Wei nodded and took the jersey from Chen Haisheng's hand.
This is a brand new Giants #1 jersey, exactly the same style as the one Levi wore on the day of the game.
There is also a signature written by Li Wei himself in marker in the lower right corner of the jersey.
He walked to the door of ward 308, raised his hand and gently knocked three times on the door.
"Knock knock knock!"
Ethan's clear voice came from the ward: "Dr. Weber? Please come in!"
