American Landowners: Starting with Hunting in Alaska
Chapter 63 Arrival in Town, Emily's Surprise
The snow kicked up by the tracks left a white trail several meters long behind them.
The strong wind pressure slammed into my chest, and even through the windproof layer, I could still feel the oppressive feeling.
Soviet Union did not slow down.
This snowmobile, revived by hand, demonstrates amazing mechanical qualities.
Although it looks like it was salvaged from a junkyard, and it vibrates like someone with Parkinson's disease when idling.
But once it started running, the heart that the Soviet Union had painstakingly repaired began to roar.
The power is continuous, with a strong hum and a powerful push-back feeling, which is even more powerful than that old pickup truck.
Of course, snowmobiles don't have a backrest; this is just for illustrative purposes.
Drive along the road.
Kodiak Island is currently a huge blank canvas.
The roads, road signs, and even the low bushes have all disappeared.
Suwei could only rely on his memory and the towering telephone poles in the distance to determine his direction.
He leaned forward, his legs gripping the vehicle, using the shift in his center of gravity to control the steering of this steel beast.
Every time the tracks rolled over the hard snow crust, a clear and harsh vibration would be transmitted back.
The zipper on her clothes was slightly ajar.
Marshmallow had clearly never seen anything like this before.
At first, it tried to stick its head out to see the scenery, but after its face was covered in snow foam by the cold wind, it quickly withdrew, leaving only its two pointed ears sticking out, which wobbled with the bumps of the vehicle.
Half an hour later.
A series of undulating building outlines appeared at the edge of the field of vision.
We've arrived in Kodiak.
The situation in the town was worse than Suwei had anticipated.
The streets were completely filled in, with only a few huge yellow snowplows roaring along the main roads, pushing aside snowdrifts that resembled city walls.
Most of the private cars were buried like big white buns, completely unable to move.
People with this trait are extremely rare.
According to my memory, this situation has occurred in Kodiak since I was a child.
The number of bureaus is countable.
This area remains in the temperate zone, unlike northern Alaska, which is closer to the Arctic Circle.
Such a snow disaster is a rare occurrence, happening only once every few years.
But now, it has appeared.
Suwei drove his snowmobile directly over the buried sidewalk.
This kind of operation, which would normally be a definite violation, became the only way to get through the catastrophic traffic conditions today.
Several residents who were shoveling snow in front of their homes straightened up and looked at the young man speeding away on his snowmobile with envy on their faces.
In this kind of weather, having a mobile snow vehicle is a privilege.
Who would have thought that Kodiak would experience such a snow disaster?
Suwei slowed down and, following the route he remembered, turned into a side street in the town center.
The snowplows haven't had time to clear the area yet; there's a thick layer of snow, giving you a wilderness-like feeling even in town.
The old apartment building with its peeling exterior walls stood amidst the snowdrifts, looking rather desolate.
Suwei parked the car on a relatively flat patch of snow and turned off the engine.
Of course, he wasn't stupid; he wouldn't stop on the road.
Instead, it was an open space next to it.
The parking area.
Suwei's ears finally quieted down and stopped ringing.
He took off his goggles, rubbed his cheeks which were stiff from the cold wind, and then rubbed his ears to relieve himself for a while.
Then he unzipped the jacket on his chest.
"arrive."
Cotton Candy cautiously peeked out, its blue eyes darting around. After confirming there was no danger, it placed its two front paws on Suwei's collar.
Suwei did not put it down.
The snow here is too deep. If this little guy jumps down, you'll probably only see the tip of his tail in an instant.
He carried the fox in one arm, trudging through the snow, his steps uneven, as he walked towards the apartment door.
The apartment's electronic access control system had long since stopped working, and the door was ajar.
Su Wei shook off the snow off his body and walked into the dimly lit stairwell. His leather boots creaked on the old wooden floor.
Third floor, room 302.
Su Wei stood in front of the dark brown security door and knocked.
Thump, thump, thump.
The knocking echoed in the empty hallway.
no respond.
Su Wei paused for two seconds, then knocked again, this time with slightly more force.
"Who is it?"
Finally, a cautious voice came from inside the door, sounding noticeably hoarse and tired, with even a hint of barely perceptible tension.
"It's me, Suwei."
The commotion behind the door paused for a moment.
Then came a series of rapid and chaotic sounds.
It was the dull thud of a cane striking the floor, the dragging sound of hopping on one foot, and even the thud of something being knocked over.
"Click".
The door lock turned.
The security door was suddenly pulled open.
Emily stood there, leaning against the doorframe.
She was wearing a slightly oversized gray loungewear set, her left leg was in a thick cast, and she had a metal crutch tucked under her arm.
Her hair was a little messy, and she had casually tied it into a bun. Her usually delicate and bright face was without makeup, and there were two obvious dark circles under her eyes, making her look much more haggard.
But those blue eyes were frighteningly bright.
She stared at Su Wei as if she were seeing some incredible illusion.
"Soviet Union?!"
Emily's voice rose an octave, her face filled with astonishment.
"How did you get here?"
"Aren't all the roads outside blocked off?"
"I thought you were trapped in the mountains!"
"The road is blocked, but I have this."
Su Wei turned to the side and pointed through the window to the extremely conspicuous snowmobile parked downstairs.
"It can walk on anything except a cliff."
Emily followed his gaze and saw the dilapidated snowmobile parked in the open space.
He was completely stunned, his eyes glazed over.
It took me a while to come to my senses.
"That's my snowmobile? Oh my god!" Emily exclaimed in disbelief, and even hurriedly jumped towards the window, leaning on her crutches.
"Don't rush, be careful!"
Suwei had no choice but to rush forward, close the door behind him, and then hurriedly help Emily up.
"My God! How did you fix it? Was it not broken at all? It just suddenly worked by itself?? This is a miracle???"
Emily didn't notice that there was a pair of strong arms supporting her as she leaned out of the window.
She leaned back out of the window and asked with a surprised look.
She knew the situation of this snowmobile all too well.
The most likely explanation is that it cannot be driven.
Even though they had managed to drive down the mountain by sheer luck, the strange noises from the engine along the way still made them quite apprehensive.
However, the circumstances were special at the time, and we had no choice but to take the risk.
Once they safely returned to Suwei's cabin, the snowmobile had completed its final mission.
Emily was certain that it could never drive again.
Even if it were possible, it would break down halfway.
Because it was already an accident-damaged car!
And now, this very snowmobile has actually brought Suwei back to the town from the wilderness.
In her mind, Suvi didn't possess such repair skills!
Could it be that the engine can be repaired?
This is no ordinary repair technique!
That's why Emily was so shocked.
Beyond the shock, there was also fear.
What if Su Wei really takes a risk?
Then she would really regret not calling for help sooner!
"Don't worry, I've fixed it for now."
Su Wei spoke calmly, but the corners of his mouth that unconsciously turned up betrayed him.
"I can't do anything about its appearance. The engine has had a part added, but it's not an original part; it's barely usable. So, you'll have to tow it back to the shop for repairs. Oh, and..."
Suwei began to describe the repair process.
Emily listened, and her tense expression finally relaxed.
She breathed a sigh of relief, watching Su Wei's unusually rambling chatter, as if she had returned to the old days.
At that time, Su Wei possessed a rare air of arrogance.
Even though they've done something remarkable, they always pretend to be calm and then try to share it.
This made Emily feel that he was real.
Instead of the previous Wilderness Hunter, he became heavy, stable, more mature, and full of masculinity.
However, one may also feel a sense of distance.
And now, it feels very familiar.
This is the true Soviet Union.
Emily felt the tension of the past few days disappear.
But soon, she straightened up and carefully examined him.
