American Landowners: Starting with Hunting in Alaska
Chapter 92 Living Bunker, Absolute Zero Degree of Humanity
Chapter 92 Living Bunker, Absolute Zero of Humanity
"Sizzle"
The sudden crackling of the walkie-talkie broke the silence of the snowstorm.
Blake suddenly stopped.
Without any warning, the old hunter slid sideways into the shadow of the huge granite rock on the left, his movements so fast that Su Wei was a beat too slow.
But his muscle memory had been awakened almost at the same time as Blake disappeared.
He then used the edge of his non-slip boots to push off the ground and squeezed himself into the base of two intertwined fir trees.
Snow fell in clumps, covering the gun barrel.
"Blake! It's Charlie!"
The walkie-talkie volume was turned down to the lowest setting, but it was still jarring in the silent valley.
Blake pressed the call button, but didn't speak; he simply tapped the microphone twice.
This is the agreed-upon signal for silence.
"Listen, wherever you are, stop immediately." Charlie's voice was low but his anxiety was palpable. "The location of that gunshot has been confirmed; it's on a gentle slope in the woodland about 400 meters ahead of you."
That's the location where the deer herd was previously discovered.
Suwei lay prone in the snowdrift, his gaze behind his goggles piercing through the gaps in the branches, fixed intently on what lay ahead.
It was an open area.
"Our infrared scan is being jammed; that madman might be in a blind spot," Charlie said rapidly. "I've already sent the first and second teams to flank him; don't be the ones to stick your noses out."
"If we let him get away, no one will dare to enter this forest again," Blake replied coldly.
"I'm watching from above! As long as he dares to show his face..."
"What are you staring at?"
Blake cut off the communication.
He turned around and looked at where Su Wei was.
Without any gestures, the old hunter simply picked up his gun and disappeared back into the snowstorm.
Su Wei propped himself up, brushed the snow off the scope, and followed.
One hundred meters.
Two hundred meters.
The rusty, bloody smell in the air grew stronger.
Su Wei stopped in his tracks.
Beside a huge rock ahead, a dark, limp mass lay sprawled on the snow.
It's a Roosevelt deer.
A young male deer that has not yet reached adulthood.
Its head drooped limply in the snow, and a large patch of glaring dark red seeped from beneath it, still steaming.
There was a faint trail of footprints nearby, but the trail quickly disappeared.
The other side isn't stupid either; they know the blizzard has stopped.
Footprints are the easiest traces to reveal.
Su Wei slowly moved closer.
This deer hasn't even grown proper antlers yet; it only has two bare, short antler stumps.
The fatal wound was to the neck.
The shot was fired casually; the bullet tore through the trachea and arteries, causing it to struggle painfully for a long time with suffocation and blood loss before finally dying.
This is not a hunt.
Hunting is for food, for survival, and even for spoils, people will seek to kill with a single blow.
This is torture and murder.
Su Wei looked at those deer eyes that hadn't completely lost their luster, and something burned in his chest.
This is one of the Roosevelt deer that he once discovered.
Now it has turned into a pile of rotten flesh in the snow.
Blake stood beside the body and poked at the spent cartridge cases on the ground with the barrel of his gun.
"No matter where that bastard is hiding, he's nearby." The old hunter's voice was like a howling wind. "The surroundings are too chaotic to pinpoint his location."
He raised his wrist and looked at his watch.
"Wait for Charlie's men. This place has complicated terrain; rushing in will be fatal."
"No need to wait."
Su Wei suddenly spoke.
Blake turned his head and stared at his apprentice.
Su Wei offered no explanation.
He gave that command in his mind.
Hunting Module LV1 is now activated.
[Target locked: Unknown marksman]
[Fresh traces detected]
The tracking assistance in the hunting module is not limited to animals.
Rather, it is the prey.
Humans are too.
The world has changed in my field of vision.
From that series of obscure footprints, a golden line gradually formed, appearing intermittently.
The line cut straight through the swirling snowflakes, bypassed the three spruce trees blocking the way, and finally disappeared into a high ground to the left.
That was the only high point in this U-shaped valley.
This was also the best spot Suwei used to observe the entire deer herd when he last came here to scout.
There was a large pile of boulders there, with a sheer cliff behind it, offering an extremely wide view and making it easy to defend and difficult to attack.
"He's up there."
Su Wei raised his hand, pointing straight in that direction with his index finger.
Blake looked in the direction he was pointing, but could see nothing but dark shadows of trees and scattered rocks.
How are you so sure?
"Observation and intuition."
Su Wei could not explain the golden streaks in his eyes.
Holding his Browning, he stopped looking at the corpse on the ground and turned to cut into the woodland on his left.
That's a blind spot.
If you don't take a straight line, but instead go around that spruce forest, you can reach it from the side or rear.
Blake stood there, watching Suwei's resolute back.
Those were the apprentices he chose.
A young man with an exceptional talent for tracking.
Without any hesitation, the old hunter followed.
High in the sky.
Charlie sat in the passenger seat, clutching the thermal imaging camera's display screen, his eyes practically bulging out of their sockets.
On the screen, two clear red dots are moving rapidly.
Instead of staying put as instructed, they pierced straight into the shadowy area of the high ground, like two sharp knives, where no heat source was reacting.
"Damn it! That old stubborn Blake!"
Charlie pounded on the bulkhead. "Pull up! That's a blind spot!"
"We're losing cover!" the driver shouted.
"Those two lunatics are rushing in there! If there are actually people there, they'll be sitting ducks!"
Charlie grabbed the walkie-talkie and switched it to full frequency.
"Listen up, all groups! I'm Charlie!"
"Abandon the original flanking route! Repeat, abandon the flanking maneuver!"
"Full speed ahead to Hill 2! Blake and Suvy are approaching that damned high ground!"
The helicopter tilted sharply to the side, its massive rotors cutting through the airflow as it roared towards the dark highlands.
Suwei heard a roar coming from above.
But he didn't have time to pay attention.
The trajectory became clearer and clearer, and you could even see the blurry shadow at the end point.
That was a person.
But the figure looked strange.
In the thermal imager, there was clearly no heat reaction at that location, but according to the system's markings, something was indeed hidden there.
Fifty meters to go.
Suwei lowered his center of gravity, his knees scraping against the hard frozen ground and gravel, each step requiring precise footing—
Keep it in a solid place and avoid making any noise.
Blake, five meters behind him, maintained the same hunting posture.
Forty meters.
Thirty meters.
The outline of the pile of rubble ahead was already clearly visible.
It was a few naturally stacked granite blocks that formed a perfect firing bunker in the middle.
Just then.
A low, mournful cry came from behind the bunker, filled with pain.
"Yo-yi—"
Su Wei recognized that voice all too well.
It's Roosevelt's deer.
Moreover, it was a fully grown, enormous male deer.
Su Wei stopped what he was doing.
He readjusted the focus of the thermal imager.
This time, he saw it clearly.
Behind that bunker, there was a huge red heat source.
It was a male red deer weighing over a thousand pounds.
It neither ran nor moved; it simply knelt there like a mountain of flesh, occupying the entire space behind the bunker.
And behind that huge heat source.
Under the cover of the deer's warm body.
Hidden within is a tiny, almost completely concealed humanoid cold source.
That madman.
He broke the stag's spine, paralyzing it, but didn't kill it immediately.
He used this living behemoth, whose body temperature was close to forty degrees Celsius, as his human shield and heat source disruptor!
All the thermal imagers scanning it would see was a deer resting.
He hid under the deer's belly.
Using the still-breathing creature as cover, he held up the .338 caliber Grim Reaper's scythe.
Su Wei felt his teeth chattering, and a chill he had never experienced before, one that seemed to penetrate to the bone, made him feel cold all over.
This is what Blake called a "madman".
This madman has no bottom line.
In order to kill and escape capture, he could trample and crush all the rules of the wilderness under his feet.
The deer is still calling.
The voice was faint, barely a whisper.
It could feel the human hiding beneath it, the demon who had broken its spine, pressing a cold gun barrel against its neck.
"Did you see that?"
Blake had somehow gotten close to Suwei, his voice as soft as a ghost's.
"I saw it."
Suwei's voice was completely flat.
"That's the lord deer."
Suwei recognized the pair of enormous antlers.
Last time I came, it was swaggering around in the middle of the valley, driving away other male deer and protecting its herd.
Now it has become a hideout for the killer.
"How do we do it?" Suwei asked.
The searchlight beam from the helicopter had already swept over the vicinity, and the deer, stimulated by the bright light, tried to struggle to its feet.
But the paralysis of its hindquarters meant it could only frantically paw at its front hooves.
"He knew we were coming."
Blake pulled a flashbang grenade from his waist.
"This kind of madman won't care about being surrounded."
"He's waiting for the helicopter to descend, or for someone to rush up."
Blackl dropped the pull ring.
"Since he likes to hide behind living things."
Without any hesitation, the old hunter exerted force in his arm and hurled the black iron lump at a pile of rocks forty meters away.
"Then let him taste what it's like to be in an uproar."
"boom!"
The blinding white light instantly engulfed the darkness.
A tremendous explosion echoed through the U-shaped valley, causing the snow on the treetops to fall in a flurry.
The previously paralyzed stag unleashed its last strength in extreme terror.
It frantically raised its head, wildly waving its heavy antlers, and desperately stomped its forehooves on the ground.
The once perfect cover collapsed instantly.
Amidst the chaotic dust and the cries of deer, a figure suddenly darted out.
He was dressed in white polar camouflage and moved as fast as a startled snow leopard.
He wasn't holding a gun.
To be precise, the gun was still trapped under the deer.
But the moment the figure burst out of the smoke, instead of retreating into the woods behind it, it charged towards Suwei and Blake.
A flash of cold light appeared in his hand.
It is a hunting knife with serrated edges.
The distance was less than thirty meters.
For these desperate criminals, two seconds is enough to cover that distance.
"Bang!
'
Suwei did not think.
The butt of the Browning rifle struck his shoulder.
A burst of orange-red flame shot from the muzzle.
