Chapter 34 The Starting Point That Changed the World

"Hey! You red-haired brat, don't throw wet wood into the fire, it's making too much smoke!"

"Hey you with the orange hair, stop just staring and go help Minato plug that leak!"

"And that little girl with blue hair... Oh, Xiao Nan, you can just sit down. Let the men do the rough work."

Inside the abandoned cave, Jiraiya was directing the site like a foreman.

After most of the day of repairs, this dilapidated cave, which was originally drafty on all sides, finally looks a bit like a "home".

Nishikawa Tetsu used physics and mechanics to rebuild the supporting pillars, Namikaze Minato used speed to move large rocks to seal the gap, and the three orphans were responsible for clearing away the rubble and weeds.

When the first pot of steaming wild vegetable and mushroom soup was ready, five boys sat around the fire, holding chipped wooden bowls, their faces flushed red by the firelight.

Yahiko took a big gulp of soup, which burned his mouth, but his eyes shone with an alarming brightness.

Looking at the powerful Konoha ninjas around him, he felt like he was dreaming.

Suddenly, as if remembering something, he jumped to his feet, pointed at Nishikawa Tetsu, his eyes wide: "Ah! I remember now! It's you guys!"

The shout startled Konan, who was warming herself by the fire, and Nagato timidly raised her head as well.

"What's wrong, Yahiko?" Jiraiya asked, puzzled.

"Teacher! These two guys..." Yahiko pointed at Nishikawa Toru and Minato, his voice trembling with emotion, "They're the ones from that abandoned shrine! They were covered in filth back then, and they even gave us food!"

Reminded by Yahiko, Nagato's gaze also fell on Nishikawa Tetsu. Looking into that calm yet somewhat indifferent gaze, memories instantly flooded back.

That rainy night, the child who gave him candy and told him to "protect his eyes".

"It's you..." Nagato subconsciously touched his pocket; he still couldn't bear to eat that candy and had kept it.

"Finally recognized you?"

Nishikawa Tetsu did not deny it, but instead showed a faint smile, "You have a good memory."

Minato Namikaze scratched his head and revealed his signature sunny smile: "Sorry, the situation was special at the time. We were hiding from Hanzo's personal guard, so I put on makeup and didn't dare to say much."

Yahiko sat down somewhat embarrassed. "Thank you for the food. If it weren't for you that day, Minami would have fainted from hunger."

Once the misunderstanding was cleared up, the somewhat stiff atmosphere caused by unfamiliarity instantly eased.

"Since we're acquaintances, let's get to know each other again."

Minato extended his hand first: "My name is Minato Namikaze, a Chunin of Konoha, and my dream is to become Hokage."

"My name is Nishikawa Tetsu." Tetsu nodded simply. "I'm also a Chunin, and I'm a believer in science."

The three children looked at each other and mustered up their courage to give their names.

"I am Yahiko! I am the one who will change this country!"

"I am Xiao Nan."

"I...I am Nagato."

Jiraiya watched this scene with a grin that stretched from ear to ear.

He picked up a piece of firewood and threw it into the fire, sending up a few sparks.

"Alright, now that everyone knows each other and has eaten and drunk their fill, it's time to get down to business."

Jiraiya put down his bowl, sat cross-legged on a large rock, and his expression became serious.

He looked at the five disciples in front of him, who were of vastly different ages and abilities, and cleared his throat.

"Since I've decided to stay, I must take responsibility for you. From today onward, I am your teacher."

"But!" Jiraiya changed the subject, holding up two fingers, "We need to teach according to individual needs. Your foundations are different, so the training content will be completely different as well."

He pointed to Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan.

"The three of you can't even refine chakra, and your bodies are too weak. So, your first lesson is—survival."

"I will teach you how to refine chakra, how to use ninja tools, and..." Jiraiya's eyes deepened, "As the 'heart' of a ninja, I don't want you to become people who abuse power after learning ninjutsu. Power is for protection, not for creating more tragedies."

Yahiko nodded, seemingly understanding, and clenched his fist: "As long as I can become stronger and protect everyone, I'll learn anything!"

Then, Jiraiya turned to look at Minato Namikaze and Tetsu Nishikawa.

"As for the two of you..."

Jiraiya grinned and pulled a huge, orange scroll from the massive scroll behind him, slamming it heavily onto the ground.

"Bang!"

Smoke and dust rose everywhere.

"You're already Chunin capable of handling things on your own, so I don't need to teach you the basics. Besides, Minato is developing that no-seal ninjutsu, and Che is working on his scientific inventions."

"Therefore, what I can teach you is another method—spirit communication."

"Summoning Jutsu?" Minato's eyes lit up. He immediately thought of the giant toad he had seen on the battlefield.

"That's right." Jiraiya unrolled the scroll, revealing countless bloody handprints and names inside. "This is the scroll from which a contract was made with the toad clan of Mount Myōboku. As long as you sign your name and press your bloody handprint, you can borrow the power of Mount Myōboku."

Nishikawa Tetsu looked at the scroll. Mount Myōboku was one of the three holy lands, possessing the inheritance of sage techniques.

For someone with insufficient chakra, this might be a shortcut to natural energy.

"I'll go first."

Without any hesitation, Minato Namikaze bit his finger and solemnly wrote the four characters "Minato Namikaze" after those lines of legendary names, then pressed his handprint.

"Very good." Jiraiya nodded in satisfaction and looked at Nishikawa Tetsu.

Nishikawa Tetsu did not hesitate and signed his name.

"The hand seal sequence is: Boar-Dog-Rooster-Monkey-Sheep. Remember, the flow of chakra must be instantaneous, and imagine the companions you are summoning."

Jiraiya demonstrated it once.

"Spiritual communication!"

"Bang!"

A tadpole no bigger than a palm hopped twice in front of the water gate.

"Uh..." Minato scratched his head, somewhat embarrassed. "It seems... we failed?"

"Hahahaha!" Jiraiya burst into laughter, tears streaming down his face. "Being able to summon tadpoles on your first try is already quite a talent! Back in the day, I was just..." He suddenly stopped, as if recalling some dark history he didn't want to mention.

It was Nishikawa Tetsu's turn.

He didn't rush to form hand seals, but instead quickly built a model in his mind.

Summoning techniques are essentially a type of space-time ninjutsu.

Using blood pacts as coordinates, chakra is used to open a passage between two dimensions.

The amount of chakra determines the size of the channel, which is the volume of the summoned creature.

My chakra reserves are not as high as Minato's; if I forcibly summon a combat-type toad, I might be drained dry.

Therefore, we need to focus on "frequency" to accurately locate those small but highly functional toads.

Nishikawa Tetsu took a deep breath, formed a hand seal, and his movements were as perfect as a textbook.

"Spiritual communication!"

"Bang!"

A puff of white smoke dissipated.

A toad, entirely green and carrying a small bundle on its back, appeared on the ground.

It was only the size of a kitten, wore glasses, and looked very refined.

"Hmm? A new contractor?" The green toad pushed up its glasses and glanced at Nishikawa Tetsu. "I am Kosuke, the 'Messenger Toad' of Mount Myōboku. Although I am not good at fighting, I am very fast and I am good at information transmission."

"We did it!" Yahiko exclaimed, his eyes sparkling.

Jiraiya looked at Nishikawa Tetsu with some surprise.

"You actually summoned a utility toad on your very first try? You little brat... did you plan this all along?"

"I guess so." Nishikawa Tetsu squatted down and shook hands with Kosuke. "After all, my chakra reserves are limited."

"Tch, what an unlovable brat." Jiraiya scoffed.

In the days that followed, this remote place became lively.

The group built a house here, and each person had their own room. They settled down here temporarily.

In the early morning, Jiraiya led Yahiko and the other two in physical training, teaching them how to feel nature and how to refine chakra.

At noon, Minato would practice chakra control under the waterfall, trying to stabilize the swirling airflow.

Meanwhile, Nishikawa Tetsu would be deep inside the cave, studying the materials he brought back from Amegakure while chatting with Nagato.

"What are you doing?"

Red-haired Nagato sat next to Nishikawa Tetsu, hugging his knees, his eyes, hidden by his hair, secretly watching the test tube in Nishikawa Tetsu's hand.

"I'm refining something called 'penicillin'," Nishikawa Tetsu said, shaking the liquid in the test tube. "This mold can kill bacteria and prevent wound infection. In this world where medicine is scarce, this stuff is more valuable than gold."

"Can you save them?" Nagato asked in a low voice.

"It can save many people." Nishikawa Tetsu turned to look at Nagato, his gaze seemingly fixed on the Rinnegan through Nagato's red hair.

"Nagato, there are many kinds of power. Ninjutsu is power, science is power, and this potion is also power," Nishikawa Tetsu said meaningfully.

He didn't dare to be too explicit, after all, who knew if that pervert was eavesdropping nearby?

Nagato was stunned.

Potions are also a form of power? He didn't quite understand.

Nishikawa Tetsu smiled and handed him a compressed biscuit. "But before that, eat your fill and get your body strong."

At the entrance of the cave.

Jiraiya leaned against the rock wall, watching the scene inside, a relieved smile appearing on his lips.

"It seems that keeping these two brats here was the right thing to do."

He looked at Minato, who was 'sparring' with Yahiko, and then at Nishikawa Tetsu, who was 'teaching' Nagato.

"The tender buds of the Leaf Village and the seedlings of the Rain Country intertwine in this small cave."

"Perhaps... this is the beginning of change."
