Chapter 21 A Twisted Fate is Still a Fate
After the afternoon military training ended, Lin Chuan got up and returned to his class's training ground, only to see Wang Xu standing there, waving at him.
It seemed that Zhao Jiajia and Chen Xiyu and the others had gone back to their dorm to do something, so only the two of them were left for lunch.
Lin Chuan didn't mind. They went to the cafeteria together, got their food, found a quiet spot to sit down, and started eating with their heads down, because he was indeed a bit tired today.
"Old Lin, what's going on with you?" Wang Xu asked.
"What's going on?"
"You know Cheng Xue too?"
"We're all in the same class, don't you know each other?"
"That's not what I meant. Actually, I went to the bathroom during my break and overheard you two talking," Wang Xu said with a sly grin. "Hey, I didn't expect Cheng Xue to be your childhood sweetheart. What's gotten into you?"
"I really don't remember that," Lin Chuan said casually.
"Think about it again, did you really have some kind of ill-fated relationship with that person before?" Wang Xu said with a grin.
"You're laughing so happily even with this ill-fated relationship?"
"Even a tragic relationship is fate," Wang Xu said matter-of-factly, then sighed, "But now that you're so close to Chen Xiyu, the prettiest girl in the class, if you were to steal Cheng Xue away too, I feel like you'd become the public enemy of the boys in the class—no, the public enemy of the boys in the whole school!"
"Hehe." Lin Chuan laughed at his antics, but he was too lazy to argue with him. He quickly finished his meal, got up, and left.
"Where are you going? Wait for me," Wang Xu said.
"Go back and practice more." Lin Chuan said without turning his head.
In the evening, on the playground of the No. 1 Middle School, besides the resting "military officers", there were also many senior students who were leaving school. Some were running, some were walking and chatting. Only in an inconspicuous corner, a boy and a girl in military training uniforms were practicing their movements over and over again.
"Forward! March!"
"Salute!" Instructor Liu shouted.
Lin Chuan and Cheng Xue walked forward side by side. After a few meters, following the slogan, they changed from marching in step to goose-stepping, raising their hands in salute. Their movements were standard and their coordination was basically the same.
"Attention!" Instructor Liu shouted, stopping the two men.
He glanced at the time. "That's all for today's practice. Your movements are all fine, and your coordination has improved a lot. There shouldn't be any problems. You can start preparing to lead the formation tomorrow."
"Okay," Lin Chuan said.
"Take a break for the rest of the time," Instructor Liu said.
As night fell, Lin Chuan sat on the lawn of the playground.
Students from other classes also sat together, some of them already playing games under the guidance of their instructors. Next to their fifth class were the third and seventh classes. The third class was playing a spinning game, while the seventh class was singing.
Moreover, the equipment looked very professional; it even included a small speaker, microphone, and guitar, showing that they came prepared.
Tonight's military training will only last for half an hour, with the rest of the time being rest and recreation time. This was announced by the instructors in advance, so these preparations can be considered premeditated.
The clear singing voice of Class 7 next door carried over the equipment to the edge of the playground, attracting the attention of many students in their class. Lin Chuan yawned, feeling exhausted today. As the class monitor, he already had a lot to do, and now he had to be the team leader as well.
On the other side, after the boys in Class 7 finished singing a song, their classmates applauded. Many students in Lin Chuan's class also applauded.
The boy who was singing turned to look in the direction of Class 5, "The students in Class 5 are so enthusiastic, how about we sing a song too?"
Lin Chuan was taken aback; these words sounded familiar.
In fact, Class 5 and Class 7 were quite familiar with each other. Of course, this familiarity stemmed from the few days of military training when Instructor Liu often competed with the instructors of Class 7, such as singing military songs to each other in the front row, and having competitions in standing at attention, squatting, and so on...
I've been spending less time with Class 3, probably because they lost a basketball game to them, and I haven't bothered them since.
Lin Chuan didn't understand before, thinking it was just a feud between the two squad instructors, but now he sees it clearly, this is obviously a deliberate training exercise for them.
"Oh! Oh! Class 5, sing one! Sing one!" The students from Class 7 also chimed in.
At this moment, some boys in Class 5 started making a fuss, and Lin Chuan looked over.
A few boys in the corner were shouting something. Among them was a fat guy, I think his name was Xu Zhi, and another guy with glasses, whose name was Wang Lun. He used to be with Liu Hao every day, but I didn't remember his name before. Now I remember.
"Brother Hao, go up and sing them a song."
"Yeah yeah."
Liu Hao stood up looking a little embarrassed. Actually, these guys were just there to create a lively atmosphere. He had offered them water so they would cooperate with his performance on stage.
He wanted to show off in his class today, but now that he sees that he can perform in both classes, and there are musical instruments too, and he happens to be able to play a little guitar, it feels like everything was prepared just for him today.
Encouraged by his friends, Liu Hao reluctantly walked to the center of the crowd.
"Thank you everyone. I'll sing a song for you all," Liu Hao said with a smile, holding his guitar. "How about 'Cao Cao'?"
He cleared his throat, his gaze sweeping across the crowd, thoroughly enjoying the attention he received. After taking a deep breath, he spoke directly.
"Only heroes read the Romance of the Three Kingdoms."
How could a hero not understand loneliness...?
Lin Chuan looked up at Liu Hao on the stage. Putting everything else aside, this guy played the guitar fairly well, and his singing was only so-so. Although he missed quite a few high notes, it was still passable.
After the song "Cao Cao" ended, both classes applauded. The song wasn't particularly good, but it was already quite good that they were willing to perform at this time. Even Lin Chuan gave a symbolic round of applause.
"Class 5 sang alright," came the voice of the class monitor from Class 7 next door, who sounded like a host. "Should we have them sing another song?"
"want!"
"One more song!"
"One more song!"
Amidst the shouts of Class 7, someone in Class 5 suddenly yelled, "Class monitor, go up and sing a song!"
Many students in Class 5 looked at Lin Chuan, who was still sitting on the ground yawning. He paused for a moment, looking completely bewildered. What was this? Why did I have to go up and sing a song?
"Class monitor, go up and give Class Seven a performance." The others chimed in.
"Yeah, class monitor, let's bring glory to the class!" Liu Hao rarely chimed in, even changing his address from Lin Chuan to class monitor. Of course, he had his own ulterior motives; as far as he knew, Lin Chuan couldn't sing.
I still remember the New Year's Eve party in my third year of junior high school. It just so happened that our class was chosen to perform. Lin Chuan, who was forced to sign up, preferred to be a background character rather than sing in the choir. Back then, he was the one in charge of registering the performance list.
"I'm not very good at it." Lin Chuan stood up and waved his hand with a smile.
"It's okay, just do a random bit," the class monitor of Class 7 chimed in.
"yes."
"Give me a verse! Give me a verse!" shouted the students of Class 7.
Lin Chuan can actually sing. Back in high school and early college, he was a bit of a layabout and would mess around with all sorts of entertainment, but he didn't really want to go on stage because he was a bit tired, plus he hadn't learned much guitar.
"Class monitor, everyone says so, so don't spoil the fun." Liu Hao deliberately handed over the guitar.
"I can't play this," Lin Chuan said, looking at the guitar that was handed to him.
"Or you could just strum a few notes on the guitar," Liu Hao said, seemingly unwilling to back down.
Lin Chuan was about to suggest that he sing a couple of lines.
"I can play the guitar." Another girl stood up from the Class 5 group and took the guitar from Liu Hao's hand.
