"Class monitor, could you go and ask Chen Xiyu if she could sing a song at the end of the military training cultural performance?" A boy from Class 5 asked cautiously by the side of the playground. Lin Chuan remembered that the guy's name was Chen Xiao, and there were several students following behind him.

"A cultural performance?" Lin Chuan asked.

"We'll have a party after the military training drill," the boy said.

"I know about the party after military training, but does our class have to put on a performance?" Lin Chuan asked.

"No, no, it was voluntary, but it would be nice if our class put on a performance too, wouldn't it?" Chen Xiao said with a smile.

Lin Chuan glanced at him. It was easy to see through the little schemes of a high school student. Everyone wanted to see Chen Xiyu perform on stage.

"If you want to see a performance, just go find her," he said.

"We asked her, and she said she wasn't interested," one of the boys said. "Isn't it because we're thinking of asking our class monitor to do it? Or how about you and Chen Xiyu sing another duet? That would definitely win us the best performance of the evening!"

"I'm not interested either," Lin Chuan waved his hand.

"Oh." The group walked away awkwardly.

"Class monitor, are you two really not going on stage?" Zhao Jiajia asked curiously from the side.

"I'm not going," Lin Chuan said.

Regarding the performance, his homeroom teacher and Instructor Liu had already approached him, but he wasn't really interested. He was forced into singing last time.

After this military training, there's no point in having to perform any shows. Besides, he's the team leader; he should be doing well just marching in formation. Why would he have the interest or mood to perform anything?

"It's a pity, I wanted to admire the class monitor and Xiaoyu's heroic figures on the platform," Zhao Jiajia said with a hint of regret.

"Yeah, yeah," Wang Xu chimed in, "How about one?"

"You two should focus on marching properly," Lin Chuan glanced at the two of them. "Tomorrow's drill parade is the most important part of this period of military training. If you don't do well on that, be careful that Instructor Liu doesn't pull you aside for a private practice session before he goes back."

Upon hearing this, both of them instinctively shrank back, gave an awkward laugh, and looked like students who had been caught red-handed by their teacher.

On the last day of military training, it was just dawn.

The first-year high school students had already gathered on the playground, lined up in their respective classes, and on the stage, in addition to the chief instructor, there were other school leaders. Above them hung a banner that read "Military Training Report Performance," which was the final program of the military training and was also known as the drill competition.

Lin Chuan's class was one of the classes ahead of him. Everyone had already lined up on the track, and he and Cheng Xue stood together at the very front of the line.

Instructor Liu walked over and said to everyone, "This is the last time we're marching in formation. Students, give it your all! You two leaders, pay attention to your steps and lead the class!"

Lin Chuan and Cheng Xue nodded.

Generous music played over the loudspeaker, followed by an opening speech and then speeches from leaders—the same old three topics.

After dawdling for a while, the "drill" officially began with the head instructor's voice coming over the loudspeaker. The students in the first class, who were lined up at the front, took the lead and started walking forward, chanting slogans as they went.

Their movements were synchronized, and the exercise wasn't considered completely finished until they passed the stands. Then came Class Two, Class Three…

The preceding classes were almost finished marching. Seeing that the time was about right, Instructor Liu shouted, "3, 2, 1, march!"

Lin Chuan and Cheng Xue took a step at the same time, and the students in the class behind them followed in the same synchronized manner.

They chanted the same slogans they had memorized long ago: "Unite as one, strive hard; work together to create brilliance..."

As they approached the podium, Lin Chuan and Cheng Xue stepped forward in unison, then turned to look at the podium and raised their hands in salute.

The leaders and chief instructors on the stage nodded in satisfaction as they looked at the neat formation and the slogans.

The drill of Class 5 officially ended when the formation passed the podium, and the originally neat formation slowly dispersed.

"Our class's drill is over, don't leave yet, we still need to assemble over there," Lin Chuan said.

He then led his classmates to the center of the adjacent playground to assemble and line up. Lin Chuan remained at the front, continuing to admire the other classes' drills.

This drill, though simple, lasted from morning until noon.

Because after all the drills were over, there was a scoring process. Although Class 5 didn't get any "model class" award, they were still praised and received some kind of "excellent drill award".

Lin Chuan even went on stage to receive an award, which was a certificate. The drill competition officially ended only after all the classes had received their awards.

"The drill is over, thank you all for your hard work," Instructor Liu said to the students of Class 5. "You'll all be free this afternoon, so go back and rest. Tonight is our final cultural performance of military training, and you all need to be there on time. No one can be absent."

"Okay," the students replied.

"Dismissed," Instructor Liu said.

Lin Chuan stretched, finally relieved that the two-week military training was over. He instantly felt relaxed and was about to speak when someone next to him started talking.

"Wow, it's finally over, this military training is finally over."

Lin Chuan glanced at Wang Xu, "Stealing my lines?"

"hey-hey."

"Let's go eat," Lin Chuan said.

"Aren't you going to see Chen Xiyu?" Wang Xu asked. "Are you going to have dinner with me?"

"What's with that look in your eyes?"

"You used to eat with her all the time," Wang Xu said with a grin. "I thought she wouldn't contact me again."

"I've been in military training for so long, and I've asked her out to eat about the same number of times as you have. Stop talking nonsense," Lin Chuan said.

They walked out of the playground, and amidst the crowd, Wang Xu was still complaining about the previous military training.

Lin Chuan replied casually. Just then, someone tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around and saw that it was Cheng Xue standing behind him.

"I called you just now, but you didn't respond," Cheng Xue said.

Wang Xu, standing next to him, suddenly widened his eyes, looking on with a gossipy expression, as if asking, "What happened?"

"What is it?" Lin Chuan asked.

"I told you I'd treat you to dinner last time, but you said it was over after military training." Cheng Xue remained expressionless.

"I've already made plans with them," Lin Chuan said.

Before Cheng Xue could speak, Wang Xu spoke first, "Hey, wait a minute, I suddenly remembered, I'm going to the library to read, so I won't be going to eat."

"You? Going to the library?" Lin Chuan was speechless.

"Yes, yes, you two go ahead. Goodbye, Lao Lin, goodbye, Cheng Xue." Wang Xu waved to the two of them and turned to leave quickly.

They didn't give Lin Chuan even the slightest chance to stay.

"Can we go eat together now?" Cheng Xue looked at him, her voice still cold. She didn't seem to be inviting him to dinner; it was more like inviting him to a trap.

Lin Chuan was speechless.

"If you don't like the cafeteria, you can choose a time to eat out," Cheng Xue continued.

"Let's go to the cafeteria," Lin Chuan said.
