Chapter 81 Midterm Exam
In the morning, Lin Chuan had just arrived on the third floor when he saw that many students had already come to the corridor outside the classroom.
Because of the exam, there was no need for early morning reading, but everyone still arrived early. Looking at the subjects to be tested today, their diligence was truly admirable.
"Class monitor, look at them." Lin Chuan turned around and said to Chen Xiyu behind him.
"What? It's not like I haven't been studying," Chen Xiyu said. "Besides, how can you even say I've been studying?"
"Why should I be embarrassed?" Lin Chuan said. "This kind of concern from the class monitor isn't based on grades."
Chen Xiyu grinned, "Shouldn't the class monitor set an example? Study hard?"
"From now on, I'll knock on your door early every weekend morning and call you to come for your morning reading session," Lin Chuan said.
"Hey," Chen Xiyu paused for a moment, "No, I need to sleep, I can't come so early."
They entered the classroom, and Lin Chuan returned to his seat to eat breakfast. Wang Xu was next to him, but the two were now more than half a meter apart.
Fortunately, the classroom is big enough; otherwise, even with so many desks spread out, there might not be enough room. In his previous high school, the classrooms were too small, and some students had to move their desks out to the corridor to take exams.
Of course, those are the treatments given to students who don't do well in school, or students who are disliked by teachers.
After waiting a while, when most of the students had arrived, a female teacher wearing glasses walked in. She adjusted her glasses and called out, "Who is the class monitor of your Class 5?"
Lin Chuan got up and went up.
The female teacher glanced at her watch; it was almost time. "Class monitor, please divide the test papers and hand them out. We'll start the test when the bell rings."
Lin Chuan easily distributed the test papers and then passed them on.
"You're not allowed to answer the questions once you get the test paper. Wait for the bell to ring for class, but you can look at the questions," the female teacher reminded.
Lin Chuan returned to his seat and received his Chinese exam paper. He didn't look at the questions, but instead flipped directly to the end to read the essay.
He didn't plan to write the essay first, but rather to take a look at it first to get a general idea, so that he could write the essay more easily in the end.
The school bell rang, and the female teacher called out, "You can start answering the questions now."
The classroom fell silent, with only the sound of pens scratching across paper. The female teacher had initially been sitting on the podium proctoring the exam.
Then I stood up and walked around the classroom. The Chinese exam was long, but it passed quickly.
When Lin Chuan looked up at the clock on the wall again, there were only a dozen minutes left, and he still had a few hundred words left to finish his essay.
He sped up his writing and quickly finished the ending of his essay. When he put down his pen, there were still three minutes left before the exam ended.
The female teacher spoke up again, reminding everyone, "There are still three minutes left before the exam ends. Don't just focus on answering the questions; check if you wrote your name. If you didn't write your name, no matter how well you answered the questions, it won't matter."
Many students checked their exam papers to make sure their names, student IDs, and classes were correct.
"Time's up, everyone stop writing. Students in the last row, please collect your papers," the female teacher said finally.
The first subject, Chinese, is over.
As first-year high school students, Lin Chuan and his classmates had to take several more exams than the college entrance examination, but the school only arranged three days for the exams.
Therefore, the schedule was quite tight. Every day, Lin Chuan would go to school and take exams, and then go home after the exams. Day after day, the exam period passed in the blink of an eye.
It was the last day of the exams, and with just over ten minutes left before the noon bell rang, Lin Chuan closed his English exam paper.
The rest of the time was spent spacing out and quietly waiting for the exam to end.
After finally "enduring" the exam, Lin Chuan handed in his paper, turned around and called Wang Xu to go eat.
After leaving the classroom, the two met Chen Xiyu, Zhou Yun, Zhao Jiajia, and a few others at the door, and they all went to the cafeteria together.
"Ah, those dreaded midterms are finally over!" Wang Xu couldn't help but sigh at the dinner table.
"Hey, aren't history and politics in the afternoon considered subjects?" Zhao Jiajia asked from the side.
"I'll definitely study science in the future, so let's just pretend this doesn't exist," Wang Xu said.
Zhao Jiajia couldn't help but laugh.
Lin Chuan added a reminder, "I hope you can say this in front of your history and politics teachers."
"I wouldn't dare," Wang Xu chuckled. "By the way, how did your exams go?"
"It's alright." That's always Lin Chuan's answer.
"This time the questions were harder than I expected. I asked students from other schools, and their questions seemed quite easy," Zhao Jiajia said.
"After all, it's the No. 1 High School in the city," Wang Xu said.
Zhao Jiajia looked at Chen Xiyu, "Xiaoyu, do you think the questions are difficult?"
"They're pretty much the same," Chen Xiyu said with a smile.
"First in the grade, terrifyingly so," Lin Chuan clicked his tongue in amazement.
Hearing Lin Chuan's slightly teasing tone, Chen Xiyu frowned, "You haven't even finished the exams, and you're already saying I'm number one in the grade?"
"Isn't this because I trust you?" Lin Chuan smiled. "You got first place, shouldn't you treat us to a meal?"
Chen Xiyu rolled her eyes at him. "I'm going to get first place, so you should treat me to a meal."
"Yeah, is Lao Lin treating us to dinner?" Wang Xu chimed in.
"What? The class monitor is treating us to dinner?" Zhao Jiajia also looked surprised.
"What, am I going to treat you guys with class funds?" Lin Chuan said.
"I don't mind," Chen Xiyu said.
"We're the same," the others chimed in.
The noisy scene around the dining table attracted the attention of many students. Of course, most of their attention was focused on Chen Xiyu and Zhao Jiajia, and even Zhou Yun, who was keeping a low profile, was being secretly watched by many boys.
The exam on Friday afternoon wasn't for a major subject, so it was over quickly, earlier than the regular afternoon classes.
When the proctor announced the end of the exam, the sky outside the window was still bright, but the school gate was still full of cars waiting to pick up children, just like always.
"Let's go, let's go back." This time, Chen Xiyu called out as she walked over.
"I can't leave yet," Lin Chuan said.
Why?
Lin Chuan pointed to the blackboard on the wall, which had his and Wang Xu's names on it. "I'm on duty today." They also needed to be on duty during the exam period.
"Then I'll wait for you," Chen Xiyu said, turning back to say goodbye to Zhou Yun and letting her go home first.
After most of the classmates had left, Lin Chuan picked up a broom and swept the floor briefly, then mopped it.
Chen Xiyu sat at her desk, hands on the table, legs swinging back and forth, watching him work.
"Miss Chen, would you be interested in experiencing being on duty at our No. 1 High School?" Lin Chuan asked.
He and Wang Xu divided the work; Wang Xu did it at noon, and he did it in the afternoon. So he was the only one sweeping the floor right now. If someone could help, he would finish faster.
"You wish," Chen Xiyu said.
"I've already cleaned it for you."
"When?" Chen Xiyu asked.
"Your home."
"That doesn't count."
"Oh, Miss Chen, I can't count on her..."
"Hehe." Chen Xiyu didn't seem to care about his "taunts" at all, and instead watched him work with a smile.
"Get out of here if you're not going to work," Lin Chuan waved his hand dismissively. "You're getting in the way of the work."
"I don't."
After Lin Chuan finished cleaning the classroom, he quickly checked the windows to make sure they were all closed, then called out to Chen Xiyu, "Let's go."
Chen Xiyu jumped off the table and they walked out of the classroom together.
The long corridor was deserted. In the bright golden sunlight, Chen Xiyu walked lightly, her high ponytail bobbing up and down.
"What's making you so happy?" Lin Chuan asked from behind.
"It's Friday, a day off!" Chen Xiyu turned around, her smile as bright as the sunshine.
…………
Perhaps it was to celebrate the end of the midterm exams, but the dinner at Lin Chuan's house tonight was much more lavish than usual. After enjoying a delicious meal, Lin Chuan rubbed his stomach and let out a satisfied burp.
"Are you free later?" Chen Xiyu asked from the side.
"What's wrong?"
"My WiFi seems to be having some problems. Could you come over and take a look?" Chen Xiyu said.
"Is there really a problem?" Lin Chuan said.
"Why, it can't be fake, can it?" Chen Xiyu said.
Lin Chuan responded, said goodbye to his parents, and then went out with Chen Xiyu.
As he walked to the porch, he suddenly realized that he hadn't been to the neighbor's house in a while.
Chen Xiyu pushed open the door, and Lin Chuan followed her into the living room. He glanced around and found that the living room wasn't as messy as he had imagined.
The only thing that looked a bit casual was the blanket draped over the sofa and the teddy bear on it. Did that mean that Chen Xiyu would hug this bear when she was playing on her phone on the sofa?
Chen Xiyu also noticed the teddy bear on the sofa, quickly picked it up, opened the door, and threw it onto the bed.
"Why are you carrying this bear everywhere you go?" Lin Chuan asked.
"None of your business," Chen Xiyu said.
Lin Chuan smiled and got down to business, "Where is the WiFi going wrong, the router or the network cable?"
"I don't know," Chen Xiyu said. "I just can't connect to the internet right now."
Lin Chuan went to the router on the cabinet and started fiddling with it. After a while, he said, "It seems like the network cable plug is broken."
"Where?" Chen Xiyu leaned over to take a look.
"This." Lin Chuan picked up the plug; it had some black marks on it, making it look like it was burnt.
"What should we do then?"
"I'll just buy a new plug tomorrow and replace it," Lin Chuan said.
"Would you switch?"
Lin Chuan paused deliberately, "I can, but..."
"I'll treat you to dinner once you've finished," Chen Xiyu said.
"All done." Lin Chuan smiled, gave an OK sign, got up and left. "See you tomorrow."
"See you tomorrow."
The next morning, Lin Chuan knocked on Chen Xiyu's door early and called out, "Get up, Miss Chen."
After a while, the door opened, and a sleepy-eyed Chen Xiyu stood there. "What?"
"Buying things."
Chen Xiyu thought for a moment before remembering what they had agreed on yesterday, so she said "oh" and went into the bathroom to wash up.
Lin Chuan waited in the living room for about ten minutes. She finished washing up and changing her clothes, and she looked much more energetic.
The two went to the mall together, ostensibly to buy plugs, but actually they just strolled around. Lin Chuan didn't mind, since he had nothing to do this weekend and didn't even have homework because of exams.
The two strolled around until noon, then grabbed a bite to eat before returning home. Lin Chuan took his tools and started changing the plug in the living room, finishing quickly.
"It's all done. I'm leaving now," Lin Chuan said.
"Mm." Chen Xiyu nodded.
Lin Chuan carried the tools from home toward the door, and Chen Xiyu followed with her hands behind her back. At first, Lin Chuan thought that she was just being polite and seeing him to the door.
Unexpectedly, she followed him directly to his home. Lin Chuan turned around and asked, "Miss Chen, is there anything else you need?"
"No, I just came to take a look," Chen Xiyu said. As she entered the living room, she pushed open the door to Lin Chuan's room as if it were her own.
"What do you want to do?"
"It's okay, I'm just a little bored at home alone. Can I come over and sit for a while?" Chen Xiyu said. "Do you have any movies on your computer?"
If Wang Xu had asked that question, Lin Chuan would have had to consider what kind of movie he was referring to.
"Do you want to see a movie?"
"Anyway, you're free this afternoon," Chen Xiyu said. "I don't know what to do at home alone."
Lin Chuan hesitated for a moment; he actually wanted to write.
"Oh, it's just watching a movie." Chen Xiyu leaned closer to him, blinking at him.
Lin Chuan had no choice but to sit back down at his computer, open the search bar, and skillfully type in "pirate website." After all, he was just an ordinary high school student, and he couldn't afford to watch legitimate movies.
Chen Xiyu pulled up a stool in the living room and sat down next to him.
"What are you looking at?" Lin Chuan asked.
Chen Xiyu thought for a moment, "I remember there's an animated movie called 'Spirited Away'?"
"It's Miyazaki Hayao's 'Spirited Away'," Lin Chuan corrected her.
"Yes, yes, this is it. Jiajia told me it's very pretty," Chen Xiyu said.
This movie is quite famous, so it's a bit surprising that Chen Xiyu hasn't seen it.
But thinking about it, it makes sense. After all, Chen Xiyu used to be a model student, always studying and studying, never playing games, reading novels, or watching anime. She was like a model student.
But now, apart from his grades being those of an "Excellent Student," he doesn't resemble one in any other way.
Lin Chuan casually typed the movie title on the keyboard, opened the curtains, and the page started loading. He then got up and pulled the curtains up a bit to block out the sunlight.
The room fell silent. The movie finished loading on the screen, and accompanied by familiar anime music, a slightly retro anime interface appeared before them.
If Lin Chuan remembers correctly, this movie tells the fantastical adventure story of a 10-year-old girl named Chihiro who, while moving with her parents, accidentally enters the spirit world, and her parents are turned into pigs because of their gluttony...
The laptop screen wasn't very big, and the two were sitting very close. When Chen Xiyu looked at it, she would subconsciously lean closer, and their hair fell onto Lin Chuan's shoulder.
He could smell the warm fragrance of the girl's hair. For some reason, he felt that the scent was somewhat familiar, as if it lingered deep in his memory.
But then I thought about it again, and it's normal to get used to each other, since the two of them spend every day together.
Lin Chuan had seen the movie before, so he didn't watch it very carefully; he just treated it as watching it with Chen Xiyu.
The room fell completely silent. Chen Xiyu was engrossed in her reading; the laptop's somewhat cheap speakers blared lines from anime. The sunlight filtering through the curtains and falling on the desk was slowly fading in the west.
Even after the movie ended, Chen Xiyu commented with some lingering satisfaction, "This movie was really good."
"After all, it's a Miyazaki Hayao film," Lin Chuan said.
"But it seems better to watch movies in theaters," Chen Xiyu said.
"Indeed." Lin Chuan didn't refute it, closed the webpage, and said, "Alright, the movie's over, time to go back."
"So fast?" Chen Xiyu said.
"Mainly, I think Miss Chen should go home and get some rest. We've been out all day, and we're feeling a bit tired from time to time," Lin Chuan coaxed gently.
He put his hands on Chen Xiyu's shoulders and walked out, saying, "Let's go back and have a nice nap first, and I'll come over to call you for dinner later."
After sending the person back to the next room, Lin Chuan returned to his own room and began his writing career.
He had a very leisurely weekend after the exam. He spent his days writing at home and his evenings going out for a stroll with Chen Xiyu after dinner.
