Terrifying Heavens: I Slay Demons by Painting Faces

Chapter 18 The Fox Borrows the Tiger's Power

Before the sun had even set in the west, its yang energy scorched the earth, and demons and ghosts had to hide.

Under the blazing sun, Chen Hengyi, holding an eighteen-foot spear and carrying a theatrical box, moved swiftly through the mountains and forests.

In front of him was Si Mu, whose calves were bound with two yellow talismans. He was dressed in a yellow Taoist robe and was also fully armed.

Si Mu was leading the way, glancing down at the compass in his hand every now and then.

Suddenly, Si Mu stopped: "We can't go any further, or we'll be on their territory."

Chen Hengyi stopped behind Si Mu and looked up. He saw what looked like a cave in the dense forest, and outside the cave were some strange buildings, like a child building blocks.

Outside the cave, several strings of dried animal entrails hung on a crooked wooden frame, with bones piled at the base of the frame.

The most terrifying thing is the talisman drawn with cinnabar on both sides of the cave entrance—it is clearly imitating the handwriting of Taoist talismans for warding off evil, but the words "imperial decree" are written upside down, exuding a sinister aura.

Si Mu frowned and muttered, "Strange, how come I didn't notice this when I passed by before..."

As they spoke, they turned around at the same time and found that Chen Hengyi had already started painting the face mask.

He was taken aback: "What's this?"

As Chen Hengyi continued drawing, he said, "Daoist Master, you go first, I'll protect you from behind!"

Si Mu shrugged, ignoring Chen Hengyi's nonsense, and began to set up the altar.

No matter what, you definitely can't trespass into someone else's execution ground; what if you accidentally capsize in a ditch?

Only a fool would venture into someone else's territory and court disaster.

As the two were preparing, a portly middle-aged man suddenly timidly peeked out from the crack: "Where is this? Something's not right."

After a while, a woman with a graceful figure and beautiful face suddenly appeared behind him.

She shoved the man aside abruptly and yelled, "Useless trash!"

The woman's body flew out of the cave entrance like a ghost, quickly passing around the area, seemingly also exploring the place.

In the distance, Chen Hengyi and Si Mu exchanged a glance and were both startled.

They hadn't done anything, yet the monster inside had already discovered them. What incredible perception!

After a while, the woman and the man returned to the cave.

Chen Hengyi was surprised because the woman's appearance was exactly the same as the fox spirit in the Zombie Uncle storyline in his memory!

Actually, when Chen Hengyi watched it before, he was also curious. Aren't fox spirits supposed to suck life essence? Even if they ate people, they wouldn't choose corpses, right?

Why would she steal a Taoist priest's client?

Now it seems there was another reason.

Chen Hengyi quickly put on his opera costume, unsure if he had been discovered.

A strange roar came from inside the cave.

Immediately afterwards, the fox spirit that Chen Hengyi had seen earlier rushed out of the cave again, shrieking as it pounced toward them.

A copper coin sword, gleaming with golden light, shot down like an arrow and instantly pinned it back.

The fox spirit let out a mournful cry and then disappeared without a trace.

She was met with a rebuke from Si Mu.

But instead of feeling smug, Si Mu anxiously exclaimed, "Oh no, I can't invite the patriarch yet!"

This means that Chen Hengyi might have to take the lead for a while.

As soon as he finished speaking, Chen Hengyi did not reply, but the demon cave underwent another strange change.

A thick plume of smoke suddenly billowed out of the cave, followed by muffled footsteps.

A strange thing crawled out of it, resembling both a human and a tiger, with tiger stripes and fur, a broad back and a muscular build, standing three meters tall, and with its tail trailing behind it, it was four or five meters long!

It's said to be a tiger, yet it also has a human form.

"This is a tiger spirit that hasn't fully transformed!" Four Eyes exclaimed in surprise.

As soon as the tiger spirit appeared, its enormous tiger eyes locked onto the direction where Si Mu was looking.

"Awooo—!"

A fierce roar from a tiger sent chills down the spines of everyone present.

Behind the tiger spirit were two fox spirits and a group of accomplices.

As soon as the tiger demon spotted the two, it pounced on them without hesitation.

Its speed was extremely fast; it covered most of the distance in just a few leaps, and its intense tiger-like aura was terrifying.

Chen Hengyi had already disguised himself as Zhang Fei, the butterfly-faced man from the Black Cross Gate!

He stood beside Si Mu, wearing a black theatrical robe, as imposing and unmoving as an iron tower, with three command flags waving on his back.

Her phoenix eyes were fixed on the tiger spirit rushing towards her.

Like a great general in the army, he possesses the might of thunder and lightning, yet remains as calm as a still lake.

Closer and closer!

In the blink of an eye, the tiger demon was already close by, a foul stench assaulted our senses, and its roar pierced our eardrums.

That hideous face, neither human nor tiger, brought out the uncanny valley in people's minds.

Si Mu snorted coldly, slammed his hand on the altar, and several talismans flew out instantly. A flame, like a fire snake, coiled towards the ferocious tiger spirit.

With a furious roar, the tiger spirit, carrying a bloody and malevolent aura, ignored the threat of the flames and aimed its claws straight for the head of the four-eyed creature.

"You beast!" Four Eyes was not afraid. He stomped his foot, and two wooden puppets jumped out from the altar, baring their teeth and claws as they attacked the tiger spirit.

The next second, two loud bangs rang out, and the little figure exploded in mid-air.

But the tiger spirit's power suddenly faltered, diminishing somewhat out of thin air.

Immediately afterwards, the Four-Eyed Taoist stomped his foot and pulled out a steel sword as wide as two hands from behind his side.

"The patriarch has possessed me!"

He was about to slash his sword at the tiger demon's face!

Just as the tiger spirit was about to step onto the stage, a loud, angry roar in opera style exploded out, drowning out the lingering power of the tiger's howl.

"Waaaaah—you fiend, cease your arrogance!"

Chen Hengyi was as still as a virgin and as nimble as a rabbit; his strong body arrived in front of the tiger spirit in an instant.

The eighteen-foot spear swept out horizontally like a bent bow, completely interrupting the tiger spirit's advance, with a muffled thud.

A hideous wound split open on the tiger spirit's nose. The tiger spirit cried out in pain, and tears welled up in its eyes, but its murderous aura intensified.

The tiger spirit let out two groans of unknown meaning, and then its tiger claws struck Chen Hengyi horizontally.

Chen Hengyi then used his spear to push off the ground, somersaulting sideways and leaping into the air.

The upside-down Chen Hengyi and the tiger spirit locked eyes.

The tiger demon couldn't understand what this strange, dark-faced giant in front of him was.

The next second, Chen Hengyi's chest swelled up, and a crimson light appeared in his mouth.

The play is on fire, let's go!

A ball of crimson flame sprayed onto the tiger spirit's face. The damage wasn't great, but the humiliation was intense!

"Aww!!!"

Enraged, the tiger spirit abandoned the four-eyed altar and turned to chase after Chen Hengyi.

Chen Hengyi wanted to distance the battlefield so as not to affect Si Mu's altar.

The tiger spirit was chasing after them and was about to close in the blink of an eye, but then two fox spirits led a group of accomplices to attack from the front.

Chen Hengyi's phoenix eyes widened, and a surge of courage burst forth from within.

Its momentum was like ten thousand horses galloping, and its sound was like thunder in the ears.

"Ah! I am Zhang Yide of Yan! Who dares to fight me to the death?"

Chen Hengyi moved with lightning speed, three command flags waving on his back, the tiger's roar seeming to cheer him on.

His imposing presence immediately drew the attention of the two fox spirits.

The two were initially aggressive, but then they were startled and turned to run away as if they had been frightened out of their wits.

The group of ghosts were utterly terrified by the sound and their souls nearly left their bodies.

In the blink of an eye, the crisis of being surrounded from both sides was resolved.

At this moment, the tiger spirit launched its second attack. It pounced suddenly, its claws slashing out, its tiger head contorted in a ferocious manner, as if it wanted to grab and strangle Chen Hengyi.

The four witnesses, who were stomping their feet frantically in the distance, were startled and were about to blurt out the word "Be careful."

But Chen Hengyi seemed to have eyes in the back of his head, and suddenly spun around, his body flashing to the side like a dragon.

The eighteen-foot spear flashed with a cold light and aimed at the tiger demon's head—a counterattack!
