The Witch's Wandering Alchemist's Diary
Chapter 5 Let's Get Some Old Heels
The main road facing the city gate of Youmu Town was indeed paved with blue stone bricks and looked extremely clean. Various low houses and buildings stood along the main road, each with a door facing the main road and a large wooden sign hanging next to it.
Some of the wooden signs have a dark, indistinct shape drawn on them, which is probably bread.
Others depict wine glasses, suggesting a tavern.
The gaps between these houses form the alleys and lanes in the city.
Lou Le had barely stepped on the stone brick when a soldier beside him shouted, "You beggar, is that stone brick something you can step on?"
Lou Le walked dejectedly to the side path, and was immediately blinded by the terrible environment on the path.
The various foul and pungent smells made it feel like you were in a swamp rather than in a town.
The dirt road, which appeared excessively dark due to some unknown contaminant, emitted a foul odor.
Even with her feet wrapped in cloth, Lou Le still felt disgusted.
I glanced at the pedestrians walking on the path; most of them were barefoot. Their feet were covered in layers of mud, as if they hadn't washed them in ages.
"Gurgle."
Miss Lou swallowed hard, preparing herself mentally.
We walked onto a small path and stepped onto this muddy road.
To be honest, if you ignore the awful smell, this muddy road feels great underfoot—soft, squishy, and cool.
But then I saw a woman in the house next door open a window, pick up a wooden basin, and pour something out.
She froze instantly.
"Gurgle—wah!"
Lou Le almost vomited like a frog, his good mood vanishing instantly.
She quickly glanced at the column of smoke in the sky, then took off running.
Following the winding alleys, Lou Le pinched his nose, wanting nothing more than to leave this place as soon as possible.
The further you go in, the cleaner it becomes.
Even the narrow paths near the town center are covered with some inexplicable dust and gravel.
It didn't seem as muddy and smelly.
The entire town of Youmu is nearly circular, divided into an inner ring and an outer ring. The most obvious difference between the inner and outer rings is that the houses in the inner ring are more orderly, and the roads between the houses are also paved with stone bricks.
The road, paved with gravel and ash, lies in the area between the inner and outer ring roads.
The outer ring is divided into four sections, with two main roads, one horizontal and one vertical, serving as the dividing lines. The area on the right side of the outer ring is used as storage, with various warehouses built there, and very few people living there.
There were many beggars, and they were all basically filthy. But since everyone looked pretty much the same, the atmosphere was relatively harmonious.
Most of them are people who come to the city to beg for food. Because they have no money, they have no choice but to come to the landfill to sort garbage to earn money.
Lou Le followed the flow of beggars.
The landfill was right there, and Lou Le could see the mountain of garbage piled up at a glance. It was about ten meters high, piled up on the edge of the city wall, and some of the garbage even slid down to the five-meter-high city wall and then piled up outside from there.
A foul stench assaulted his nostrils, and Lou Le fell silent.
This working environment is terrible, but it's not time to give up yet.
"No pain, no gain!"
Encouraging himself, Lou Le lined up in front of the garbage dump.
The old beggars had already gone inside and started climbing the garbage mountain to rummage through all sorts of things, while the beggars who came here today wanted to see the head of the garbage dump first.
This is an old man whose clothes are inappropriate for a garbage dump.
He sat behind a table, and behind him was a notice board. Several notices were posted on the board, and the old man leaned against it, observing the newly arrived group of beggars.
There were about a dozen of them, each with a different size.
Seeing that everyone had arrived, the old man coughed and said, "I am the head of this garbage dump. The Master ordered me to guard this place! Since you are here, you should work honestly, and you will still get a copper coin every day."
"However, there are jobs to be done at the landfill. One job is as a deliveryman, who has to handle at least ten buckets of flammable garbage a day. See that metal monster over there? You have to throw that combustible garbage into the belly of that metal monster."
"This is the job of a deliveryman. He earns one copper coin for every ten barrels he delivers each day. And the more he delivers, the more he earns; if he delivers twenty barrels, he gets two copper coins!"
Lou Le glanced at it; the iron lump was actually an incinerator. Smoke was constantly billowing from it, and he had found his way here by following this thick smoke.
"If you don't want to be a deliveryman, go find something in that garbage dump yourself. If you find anything valuable, bring it to me and I'll see how many copper coins I can give you. It's all about luck; if you're lucky, you'll get a lot, if you're unlucky, you won't even get a single copper coin after a whole day's work!"
The old man said, "Anyone who wants to be a deliveryman, come here and get a bucket! Remember, if you break these buckets, not only will you not get paid, but you'll also have to work for free for several days!"
Almost all the beggars went there, but Lou Le walked towards the garbage dump without any hesitation.
"Just find a pot, just find a pot and everything will be fine."
Lou Le kept muttering something to himself.
Once you can find a pot, you can start boiling the medicine using water as a base.
The garbage dump was truly a mixed bag. Rotten leaves, broken cups, scraps of wood, scraps of cloth—all sorts of things, wet and dry, piled together, creating a pungent stench.
I stepped into the pile of garbage and sank right in.
You can even see rats scurrying around in the garbage heaps, chattering away, and many beggars are preparing to catch and eat them.
The garbage dump is also divided into sections, with some areas containing a lot of kitchen waste. You can often see discarded bone fragments and things like used candle stubs.
"That's extravagant."
Lou Le thought that only nobles and mages in towns would throw away bones. In the Middle Ages, when resources were scarce, a bone could be used to make soup, or to make tools. At the very least, it could be ground into bone needles.
Several beggars found a large bone still covered in bits of bone and immediately began to fight over it. They rolled around in the garbage heap, and one of them grabbed the bone and started gnawing on it without a care in the world.
This bone was snatched away again and again; even if there was no meat left, licking a few drops of oil was enough to satisfy these beggars.
Lou Le kept his head down and continued searching near the large pile of dry garbage.
Discarded old shoe heels
It is not edible.
—It is a metallurgical material.
Lou Le looked at the information on the old shoe heel, wiped it slightly, and stuffed it into his pocket.
The Stargazing Method can be used not only to brew potions from herbs, but also to use anything that can propel the potion to ignite stars as raw materials.
It allows the drug to travel in a zigzag direction, and such a trajectory should be useful.
By combining a few more ingredients, you should be able to create a [healing potion].
