Baron Cullen
Chapter 14 A Dinner
This was an extremely rare sight for the members of the warband.
But every time Lamont gets angry, the other party never ends up well.
At this moment, Lamoer struggled to get up and explain, but under Lamont's gaze, which was as cold as ice blades, he was so terrified that he couldn't utter a single word.
My whole body trembled slightly with fear, and my legs were so weak that I could hardly stand.
"Deputy...Deputy Commander, I...I didn't..." he stammered, his eyes filled with nothing but fear, horror, and pleading.
He would never forget the scene when Lamont tore a monster apart with his bare hands during a mission to hunt monsters outside the city.
"Shut up!" Before Lamor could finish speaking, Lamont interrupted him directly: "One month of confinement! Three months' worth of resource quota deducted!"
In addition, Karen will be compensated 100 gold coins. Any further offenses will result in expulsion from the battle group!
One month of confinement, three months of resource allocation, plus 100 gold coins as compensation!
This punishment is quite severe for a member who has been in the group for less than three years.
This would be a devastating blow, especially for a young genius like Ramour who needs a lot of resources to improve rapidly.
But no one spoke up to plead for them.
Attacking a colleague, and even using lethal force, has crossed the line for the warband.
What is a warband?
It's a team made up of comrades-in-arms.
Comrades would never stab each other in the back.
After dealing with Lamor, Lamont turned to Karen, his tone softening and a hint of guilt in his eyes, saying, "Are you alright? I'm sorry, it was my fault for not disciplining you properly. I hope it won't affect your impression of the chapter."
Karen shook her head, feeling a sense of relief.
Just a moment ago, he truly felt the danger of death.
"Thank you very much, Vice Commander," he said. "Don't worry, I know the warband's long-standing rules."
Lamont nodded.
He then glanced at Lamor, who was slumped on the ground looking somewhat lost, and instructed Harold, who was standing nearby, "Harold, take him to the solitary confinement room."
Harold quickly agreed and called two members of the chapter to help the distraught Ramor up and take him away from the training ground.
After this incident, the atmosphere on the training field became somewhat somber.
"You performed very well today. Both your combat skills and your on-the-spot reactions far exceeded my expectations." Lamont walked over and patted Karen on the shoulder. "But as you know, the tallest tree in the forest is the first to be felled by the wind."
"Within the battle group, the leader and I can keep things under control, but that might not be the case outside. So you'd better be more careful in the future."
Karen bowed: "I understand, thank you for the reminder, Vice Commander."
...
evening.
Having returned to Waller's mansion, Karen changed into a clean aristocratic casual outfit, with a short dagger tucked into her waistband, a tradition among nobles.
He then left Waller Manor, watched by his old butler, Phelps.
Before leaving the battle today, he invited Lamont to dinner.
He knew very well that if it hadn't been for the timely intervention of the vice commander of the battle group during the day, he would have really been defeated by Lamoor.
Moreover, he could sense that Lamont genuinely wanted to nurture him and was doing his best to help him.
Without the other party's help, even with his mysterious runes, it would be impossible for him to enter the realm of the extraordinary in such a short time.
As the first big shot he met after transmigrating to this strange world, he had to hold on tight.
Soon, Karen arrived at the agreed-upon restaurant in her own carriage.
He pushed open the car door, looked at the passersby coming and going in front of the restaurant, and at the bustling noise coming from inside, and felt a little more understanding of this unfamiliar world.
He pushed open the door and immediately smelled the aroma of roasted meat and beer filling the air.
The tavern was very noisy, with all sorts of people gathered there.
There were mercenaries talking loudly, merchants whispering among themselves, and adventurers sipping their drinks alone.
Choosing this location makes it seem less formal and also makes conversation easier.
At this moment, a waiter quickly approached, bowed slightly, and politely asked, "Excuse me, sir, do you have a reservation?"
"Sorry, no," Karen said, glancing around. "I'd like a relatively quiet spot."
"Okay, please come with me."
The waiter smiled and nodded, and quickly led Karen to a corner spot on the first floor of the restaurant.
"Thank you so much."
Karen pulled out a chair and sat down calmly, displaying the demeanor and etiquette befitting a member of the world's nobility, guided by the memories in her mind.
"What would you like, sir?" The waiter took out paper and pen from his pocket.
Karen thought for a moment and said, "Two medium-rare roasts, two side dishes with thick sauce, one dark bread, and two glasses of chilled ale, please."
Lamont arrived shortly after we ordered.
When he saw Karen, a hearty smile immediately spread across his face, and he quickly walked over and sat down.
"You've got a good eye for spots, kid!" Lamont looked around, his voice brimming with delight. "The ale here is top-notch!"
"I'm glad the vice commander is happy." Karen smiled, then changed the subject, "Vice commander, thank you very much for today."
His words of gratitude had two meanings.
First, Lamont saved him; second, he led him into the realm of the extraordinary.
No matter what it was, he deserved a sincere thank you.
"You're welcome." Lamont clearly understood the meaning behind the words, waved his hand and laughed, "That kid Lamont has talent, but his temperament is a bit lacking, and he can't handle setbacks."
Hopefully, this lesson will teach him a lesson he won't forget.
He paused, then looked at Karen and said, "But you, you really surprised me quite a bit."
I originally thought you were just a promising kid, but I never expected you to be so talented in both warrior compatibility and learning combat skills.
To be honest, it's a good thing for us to have someone like you join the fight.
Karen smiled and didn't dwell on the topic. Instead, she asked, "Vice Commander, I don't know much about the noble families of Absolute Breath City, especially after this incident of the artifact being switched. I feel a bit uneasy."
"I'd like to know, besides the Baal family, is there anything else the Waller family needs to be aware of?"
These words were also his second purpose in inviting Lamont to dinner.
Ever since learning that Leo had died tragically in prison on the very night he was imprisoned, he felt as if a sword of Damocles was hanging over his head, and he was filled with unease.
Could the person who killed Leo be the mastermind behind the switch of the sacred artifacts?
Lamont put down his glass, tapped his fingers lightly on the table, and pondered for a moment.
He knew what Karen wanted to ask.
"The Barr family are blatant fools, but I can't deny they might be a tool in the hands of someone or some other force," Lamont said in a lower voice, revealing his thoughts. "But they're not the only ones eyeing your Waller family."
He glanced across the noisy tavern hall, and after confirming that no one was paying attention, he continued, "Your father used to be a viscount. Although Brother Jocelyn is not a flamboyant person, he inevitably has some conflicts or old grudges with other families for the sake of the family's interests."
For example, the Ralph family had always wanted to acquire the mining rights to the area east of the city, but due to your father's status as a superhuman, the matter was ultimately dropped.
And then there's the Hopkins family. Their second son once tried to woo your sister Cecilia, and after being explicitly rejected, he felt he'd lost face or something…”
Lamont briefly mentioned a few noble names and analyzed the implications of their relationships.
These families may not resort to extreme measures like the Barr family, but after the Waller family loses power, it is highly likely that they will take advantage of their misfortune or sabotage them in secret.
They might financially squeeze out the remaining Waller family businesses, socially exclude them, or cause trouble in other ways.
Karen silently noted down these names and information.
The original owner didn't care about these power struggles in his memories, but now, listening to Lamont's analysis, he realized the potential crisis facing his family.
With their title reduced to baron and most of their property confiscated, the Waller family is now like a piece of fat meat in Breathless City, with everyone wanting a bite.
"Of course, you don't need to worry too much." Lamont changed the subject. "Now that you're part of the chapter, as long as you live up to expectations, these petty scoundrels won't dare to go too far."
A battle group is itself a form of deterrence.
Karen nodded.
He understood Lamont's meaning: being strong oneself is the best protection.
