Baron Cullen
Chapter 36 Apology
Kevin's face was ashen, and his fists were clenched.
He knew it was impossible to keep Karen today.
Forcibly detaining them would inevitably trigger a direct conflict between the Knights Order and the Warband and the Mage Guild.
He couldn't bear this responsibility, and the city lord would never support him.
Thinking of this, Kevin stared intently at Lamont and Brandon.
He was, after all, a fourth-tier transcendent who commanded the Knights Order, a powerful figure in this City of No Breath.
These two people are showing him no respect at all, all for the sake of Karen Waller!
He was filled with humiliation and anger, but had no way to vent it.
"Good! Very good!" Kevin practically spat out the words through gritted teeth. "You can take the person away! But our Knights will definitely continue to investigate this matter!"
If anything is found out, I hope the two of you will still stand up for him so firmly!
His words were really just a threat, since he didn't know whether he could find out or not.
This whole thing was completely fabricated from the start.
The reason he said that was simply to try and regain some face.
Bringing himself back to reality, Kevin waved his hand with a grim expression, signaling his knights to bring Karen out.
Karen was quickly led to the reception room.
However, besides the knight, Jacob Lance was also with him.
"Sir, what's going on?" Jacob rushed to Kevin's side, his voice filled with confusion. "We didn't say we were going to give it to that kid..."
With a snap!
Kevin slapped Jacob hard across the face!
Because he was wearing metal protective gear, while Jacob wasn't wearing a helmet, the slap completely stunned the latter!
Jacob suddenly turned sideways, staggered, and finally fell to the ground.
"Sir...sir?"
"Shut up!" Kevin glared fiercely at Jacob, cursing without mercy. "Get out of here! Don't let me see you again!"
At that moment, he truly felt the urge to kill the other person.
Seeing this, Jacob could only nod repeatedly, and got up in fear to walk back.
But when he looked up, he saw Lamont and Brandon standing on the other side, and he was even more horrified!
One is the deputy leader of the battle group, and the other is the vice president of the Mage Association. In the City of No Breath, they are both big shots of their respective forces!
He never expected that Karen would be able to get these two important figures to come!
However, when he saw Cecilia standing behind the two men, he immediately understood.
is her!
It was that little girl who tipped them off and brought those two important figures here!
He remembered.
When Karen was arrested on the street, he originally intended to take the little girl with him.
However, it was Karen's words at the time that made him consider his image as a knight captain in the eyes of the common people around him.
Furthermore, since the charge was fabricated by him, he listened to Karen and released the little girl.
"Damn Karen Waller!!!"
Jacob roared inwardly in frustration.
He was almost certain that this had been part of Karen's calculations from the very beginning.
No wonder that kid was so fearless in the cell, and even pretended to be terrified and desperate to get information out of him.
Because that kid knew from the beginning that someone would come to rescue him.
And they are the kind of people who can definitely be rescued!
Thinking of this, Jacob's face turned extremely ugly.
He is now at his wit's end, all because he made the wrong choice from the very beginning.
Meanwhile, in the reception room.
Karen looked somewhat haggard, but her eyes remained calm.
When he overheard the knight in his cell say that someone had come to bail him out, he knew in his heart that the matter was settled.
Therefore, his gaze toward Lamont and Brandon was filled with sincere gratitude.
Cecilia rushed over and hugged him, her big eyes filled with worry: "Brother! Are you alright? I was so worried about you!"
Karen gently patted his sister's head and whispered, "It's alright, I'm out now, everything will be fine."
The shackles on his hands made a slight creaking sound as they swung, which was especially noticeable in the deathly silent reception room.
"The key! Open it for me now!" Lamont roared.
He didn't even wait for the knight to untie his shackles, and stepped forward to draw the longsword from the knight's waist.
With a clang!
With a few sword strikes, he cleaved the shackles on Karen's hands and feet in two!
"Hmph! Let's go!"
After doing all this, he tossed the longsword on the ground like trash, and turned to leave with Karen and her brother.
Brandon, standing nearby, nodded slightly to Kevin and followed him away.
Only Kevin and the terrified knight remained in the reception room.
He kicked over the chair next to him with a sudden kick, his chest heaving violently inside his armor, his whole body trembling with rage!
"Lamont Kenny, Brandon Rhea!" he growled, almost biting his gums until they bled. "And Karen Waller! All the humiliation I have suffered today is because of you!"
I've made a mental note of this!
"Just you wait, if I don't kill you, all these years I've spent in Absolute Breath City have been for nothing!"
...
the other side.
Karen stepped out of the Knights' encampment and breathed in the fresh air.
He knew he was safe.
But he knew even better that the feud between him and Kevin had reached a point of no return.
But he didn't care.
He had been prepared for this ever since he rejected Kevin's offer to him in person last time.
The next day.
The news that Karen had been rescued from the Knights' encampment by the warband and the Mage Guild quickly spread within a small circle.
This was undoubtedly another slap in the face to Kevin, the Grand Master of the Knights.
In an effort to save face, or rather, to give the warband and the mage association a way out, the city lord's mansion stepped in to mediate.
Ultimately, witnessed by the city lord's representative, the Knights admitted that there were serious flaws and oversights in their handling of the Karen matter.
Jacob Lance, who was directly responsible, was required to publicly apologize to Karen and pay her 500 gold coins as compensation.
The apology was held in the busy square of the Government Affairs Hall.
...
The next day, a large crowd of onlookers gathered in the square.
There were ordinary people, spies from various families, and even members of several major powers.
Everyone wanted to see how the usually powerful knightly order would bow down and apologize to a young baron.
Accompanied by Lamont and several of his chapter colleagues, Karen arrived at the square on time.
He was dressed in simple aristocratic casual clothes, his expression calm.
Not long after, Jacob Lance, under the complex gazes of several colleagues, walked up to the stone platform in the square with a livid face.
He felt as if countless gazes were piercing him like sharp needles, making him wish he could disappear into the ground immediately.
He had never suffered such a humiliating disgrace!
At this point, the representative from the city lord's mansion finished reading the decision and gestured for Karen to come up on stage.
He slowly walked up the stone platform, stood in front of Jacob, and said, "Captain Jacob, I am ready."
Upon hearing this, the previously noisy crowd immediately fell silent.
Jacob stared intently at Karen in front of him, his eyes filled with such venom and murderous intent that they seemed almost tangible.
He took several deep breaths before squeezing out a few dry words through gritted teeth: "Lord Karen... I am deeply sorry for this misunderstanding and the inconvenience it has caused you!"
Here, I...I offer you my sincerest...apologies!
At the same time, I...I am willing to compensate you!
After saying that, he bowed and handed a money bag containing five hundred gold coins to Karen in full view of everyone.
His movements were stiff, and his face burned, but he had no choice but to do it.
The next moment, a low murmur of boos and whispers rose from the square.
Everyone could see that Jacob's apology was more painful than death for him, but most people believed that he deserved it.
On stage, Karen did not immediately take the money bag.
He simply looked at Jacob with a deep gaze, as if he could see through all the resentment and bitterness in the latter's heart.
"Thank you for your kindness, Captain Jacob. I accept your apology." After a moment, he finally took the money bag. "Remember, if there's a next time, it won't be as simple as an apology and compensation."
Having said that, he ignored Jacob and turned to walk down the stone platform.
Jacob's face had turned a deep liver color.
He gritted his teeth and clenched his fists so tightly they trembled slightly to prevent himself from exploding on the spot.
Without saying a word, he turned around, jumped off the platform, and practically ran away from the square.
His back view looked disheveled.
The public apology ended with the Knights losing face completely.
Karen watched Jacob's retreating figure, feeling little satisfaction.
He knew that although it seemed like he had won, it actually brought his conflict with the Knights, especially with Kevin, into the open.
