Dragon Raja: Lu Mingfei's War Journey
Chapter 50: Back to the Andes
Nono and Susie's plane landed at Santiago Airport, the capital of Chile. The two quickly completed immigration procedures, exchanged some Chilean pesos, and then went to the city.
"Is this Chile?" Susie looked around Santiago with curiosity, observing the surroundings and the distant snow-capped mountains. Santiago is a city at the foot of snow-capped mountains, and the distant snow-capped mountains can be seen from most areas.
"Hmm," Nono replied absentmindedly. This was her first real trip to Chile.
The two first went to the car rental shop. Susie had already booked a car rental service in Chile through Norma. Norma had booked an SUV, which Susie would drive again.
"So where should we go now?" Susie asked, gripping the steering wheel.
"We're going to the Los Maises River valley," Nono said, pulling out a map of Chile and pointing to an area.
This is where she and Lu Mingfei were rescued after emerging from the snow-capped mountains. The Enforcement Bureau recorded the exact location in detail in their report, saving them a lot of time.
"Let's go then." Susie also came closer, glanced at the map, and then nodded.
Susie then stepped on the gas and headed towards the Andes Mountains.
As the car gradually moved away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the road became rugged, and the surrounding scenery changed from urban buildings to vast wilderness and rolling hills. The air became thin and cold, and the sky was an almost transparent blue, reflecting the magnificence and solemnity of the distant snow-capped peaks.
Susie looked at the snow-capped mountains with delight. The scenery in Chile was even more beautiful than she had imagined. If this trip hadn't been to find someone, but instead was just a simple road trip, it would probably have been a great experience.
However, Nono did not share Susie's sense of surprise. As the altitude continued to rise, Nono clenched her fists. The scenery before her gradually overlapped with the desolate ice field in her memory, and a complex emotion mixed with pain and fear surged in her heart.
She could almost feel the biting cold wind again, or hear the crunching sound of snow being trampled underfoot.
Susie keenly sensed Nono's emotional fluctuations. She didn't disturb her, but silently closed the car window.
After nearly eight hours of bumpy travel, and with darkness almost falling, Susie finally drove the car to the place Nono had mentioned.
This place is completely far from the city center, and there are hardly any modern buildings to be seen. There are only some small wooden houses in the distance, and people are herding cattle and sheep around outside the houses.
However, some people were attracted by Susie's off-road vehicle. In such a remote place, outsiders rarely come. They usually travel to nearby towns by horseback.
Susie parked the SUV on the side of the road, turned off the engine, and after the roar of the engine disappeared, only the sound of the wind and the distant bleating of cattle and sheep remained.
Several herders curiously gathered around, talking in heavily accented Spanish, their eyes darting back and forth between the rugged off-road vehicle and the two Asian girls inside.
Susie tried to talk to the herders in English, but she found that they didn't understand English. Helpless, she looked at Nono next to her.
Nuonuo was carefully looking at the wooden houses outside. Decades had passed, but they were not much different from what she and Lu Mingfei had seen when they first came here.
Then Nono opened the car door and approached the herders, saying in fluent Spanish, "Hello, do you know where Sergio is?"
Sergio was the first herdsman she and Lu Mingfei met.
Susie was surprised to hear Nono speak fluent Spanish. She hadn't expected Nono to know Spanish, and the herders nearby were also taken aback.
At this moment, a herdsman who looked a little older and whose face was covered with the marks of time stepped forward. He looked Nuonuo up and down carefully, and then said hesitantly.
"I think I've seen your hair like this before?"
"Was it more than thirty years ago?" Nono asked excitedly upon hearing the herdsman's words.
"Yes, it was more than 30 years ago!" the herdsman said excitedly.
He vaguely remembered that 36 years ago, when he was ten years old, two outsiders came to the village. One of the women had red hair, but so much time had passed that he could no longer remember what the two looked like.
"You must be that man's child. I'll take you to old Sergio," the shepherd said, and then led the way.
Nono didn't correct him, but instead spoke to Susie beside her.
"Let's go." Then they followed the herdsman forward.
Susie locked the car and quickly followed Nono and the elderly herdsman. The three of them walked along a dirt road worn into the ground, heading deeper into the village.
As the herdsman walked, he rambled on in heavily accented Spanish: "Speaking of which, what happened back then was truly extraordinary. Two Easterners, they managed to walk out of those high snow-capped mountains and blizzards all by themselves. Old Sergio always said it was God's blessing..."
Nono listened silently, her heart pounding in her chest. Every word confirmed the authenticity of that experience, making her even more eager to find Lu Mingfei.
After walking for about ten minutes, a relatively new wooden house appeared on a relatively open flat area near the riverbank, with wisps of smoke rising from its roof.
The herdsman leading the way stopped in front of the wooden house and shouted, "Old Sergio! We have guests looking for you! They're the family of those two Easterners from back then!"
The door of the wooden house creaked open, and an old man with white hair, a wrinkled face, but still bright eyes, slowly walked out, leaning on a wooden cane.
He was Sergio, the herdsman who rode his horse and brought her and Lu Mingfei back from the brink of despair when they were on the verge of death.
Sergio squinted, scrutinizing Nono closely, especially her fiery red hair. His gaze shifted from doubt to disbelief.
"You...you are...impossible...how is this possible...more than thirty years...how come you...haven't aged at all?" Sergio's voice trembled slightly, as if he had seen something unbelievable.
Although the herdsman said that the red-haired woman in front of him was a relative of the woman from before, Sergio was certain that the woman in front of him was the one who had come out of the Andes Mountains.
In this poor but peaceful village, only one major event had ever occurred, so whenever he was bored, he would recall that event. Decades later, the event remained vivid in his memory, and he could still clearly remember the faces of the two Easterners.
"Let's go inside and talk," Nono said after a moment's hesitation.
"Yes, yes, come in quickly." Sergio hurriedly invited Nono and Susie into the house.
