Dragon Raja: Lu Mingfei's War Journey
Chapter 8, Day 2
After an unknown amount of time, Lu Mingfei finally stopped hearing the co-pilot's cries of pain and drifted off to sleep. He didn't know how long he slept, but he heard someone shouting next to him.
Lu Mingfei opened his eyes almost reflexively. He wasn't sleeping deeply, or rather, he didn't even know if he had fallen asleep at all.
Through the gaps in the wall formed by stacked suitcases, Lu Mingfei could see the light shining in from outside.
The rugby players nearby became excited. The despair that had been building up all night seemed to be somewhat diluted by the light. They began to push down the wall they had worked so hard to build the night before and started to walk outside.
Lu Mingfei didn't go out with her. He first checked on Nuonuo's condition. Nuonuo was no longer as cold as ice under his embrace, but had a slight warmth. This finally put his mind at ease.
He then gently put Nuonuo down and walked in the opposite direction from the others toward the cockpit, not forgetting the determination he had made the night before.
He staggered to the driver's seat, but it was quiet inside; there was no sound, not even the faint breathing or groans.
He slowly crouched down and, using the light, looked towards where the co-pilot was.
The co-pilot remained in the same contorted position as yesterday, squeezed by the instrument panel, but his face and exposed skin had turned a lifeless, bluish-gray, covered with a thin layer of white frost, like an ice sculpture.
Lu Mingfei was stunned. Then, a complex emotion welled up in his heart. First, he breathed a sigh of relief. He didn't have to pull the trigger himself and didn't have to bear the psychological burden of killing someone directly.
But then, an even stronger sense of shame overwhelmed him like a tidal wave.
In his mind, it seemed as if another cold, sharp voice was constantly echoing, interrogating him.
"You knew this would happen, didn't you?"
"Isn't this the scene you've been secretly hoping for since last night?"
"When I first saw the co-pilot's horrific injuries, I knew he wouldn't live much longer..."
"You took his gun, but failed to fulfill his final request, and still uttered those high-sounding, pretty words... What about rescue? There's medicine here..."
"You made him endure a whole night of hellish torment, only to slowly die in despair and cold..."
"Lu Mingfei...look at you, how hypocritical you are..."
"Look at you, how weak you are..."
"Did you really make that so-called resolution last night? Or was it just an excuse to comfort yourself and shirk responsibility?"
These words swirled wildly in his mind, making him feel as if his heart was being gripped tightly by an invisible hand, making it incredibly difficult to breathe, and causing a fine layer of cold sweat to instantly appear on his forehead.
He ran out of the cockpit as if fleeing, rushing towards the outside of the plane without regard for anything else. He wanted to escape that place, escape the co-pilot who had turned into an ice sculpture, and even more so, escape the voice in his mind that kept scolding him.
He burst out of the damaged tail section and almost collapsed into the snow outside, trying to calm himself down with the snow.
But the expected soft, fluffy snow didn't quite materialize. He first bumped into something hard before sinking into the relatively softer snow below.
The frost last night had caused the snow to freeze over, which made Lu Mingfei a little dizzy from the fall. But the thoughts that had been making him feel breathless disappeared. He shook his head and then looked up.
The next moment, he was completely shocked by the scene before him.
When the plane crashed yesterday, the wind and snow obscured everything, and all they could see was a vast expanse of white. But now, the snow has stopped, and the sky is as clear as if it has been washed, displaying a bright azure blue.
The sun had just risen above the eastern mountains, its warm and dazzling orange light, like God's paintbrush, slowly painting the distant, towering, snow-covered peaks, turning them into a magnificent gold.
How magnificent and splendid it was!
As far as his eyes could see, there were endless, snow-capped mountains, which stood silently between heaven and earth like sleeping silver giants, stretching to the horizon.
The air was cold and pure, and breathing it into my lungs was stinging, but it also brought an unprecedented sense of freshness.
He had only seen such scenes in National Geographic documentaries or some adventure movies, but nothing he saw on a screen could compare to the sheer awe and power of witnessing it firsthand.
At this moment, Lu Mingfei finally understood why so many people were willing to risk danger and spend huge sums of money to travel around the world to see those magnificent natural wonders.
But if... if he weren't here as a plane crash survivor, living in constant fear, how wonderful that would be.
The thought had barely crossed his mind when Lu Mingfei's stomach pulled him back to reality. From noon yesterday until now, apart from drinking a little wine to warm himself up in the evening, he hadn't eaten anything.
He struggled to his feet from the snow, brushed the snow off his clothes, and decided to go back into the cabin to see if he could find anything to eat.
At this time, most of the other people in the cabin also returned and began to count the number of people and check the condition of the wounded. Several people did not survive the previous night.
The middle-aged woman trapped between the chairs was completely stiff and unable to make that pig-like scream anymore. The boy whose leg had been severed was also dead, and the medical students were ultimately unable to stop the bleeding from his carotid artery.
Two other wounded soldiers, lying unconscious on the ground, were frozen stiff as rocks. If Nono hadn't been there to keep them warm yesterday, they probably would have ended up like those two.
The number of survivors increased to twenty-seven, of whom ten were seriously injured and unable to move, seven had fractures of varying degrees and were severely limited in their ability to move, and ten had only suffered minor injuries.
Lu Mingfei didn't know if his right hand was broken or fractured. When he took off his clothes, he could see a shocking purplish-black bruise where he had been hit, which was swollen to a high degree. Every movement caused him intense pain.
Among the survivors were two medical students, one named Cancesa, who had previously bandaged Nono.
The other one was named Zelby. Zelby had only been in medical school for a short time and was only slightly better than the average person. Cancesa, although he entered medical school a year earlier than Zelby, mainly studied psychology and was only slightly better than Zelby.
Without any medicine, the only thing the two mediocre medical students could do for the injured was to provide simple bandaging and offer psychological comfort.
