Battle for Northern Frontier: The game begins with the grassland woman buying him.
Chapter 95 The Chase
The night wind swept by, leaving the smells of blood and burnt food far behind.
Su Zhan followed the assassins ahead, hurrying through the crowd and tents.
"My lord, southwest, hurry!" The assassin leading the way had a hoarse voice. Beside him, another man was supporting a companion whose leg had been grazed by a stray arrow. They were moving very slowly.
Whoosh! Thud! A powerful crossbow bolt grazed Su Zhan's ear and embedded itself in the nearby tent.
Immediately afterwards, more sharp, piercing sounds tore through the air, disrupting the chaotic noise.
"The guards are catching up!" the assassin exclaimed, supporting the wounded soldier, his voice trembling slightly.
Those were Huyan Zhuo's most elite hunters; they were finally locked on.
Su Zhan's eyes flashed, and he abruptly stopped, grabbing a burning leather tent and throwing it in the direction from which the crossbow bolts had come.
Then he shouted to those around him, "Split up and follow Route 3! Everyone, hurry!"
He let out a low growl, and then the assassins immediately gritted their teeth and carried out the order.
Two unharmed assassins carried the wounded man, abruptly turned into a narrow tent crevice, and disappeared into the darkness.
Su Zhan, on the other hand, chose the opposite direction, a path that seemed to lead to the outskirts of the royal court but was actually closer to a cliff.
He needs to draw away the main force of the pursuers.
The thunderous sound of hooves followed behind, mingled with shouts in the language of the grasslands.
The barking of the guard dogs was clearly audible and growing louder.
A chilling killing intent relentlessly pursued Su Zhan.
Su Zhan pushed his speed to the limit, his lungs pumping like bellows.
He used the collapsed supply wagons and haystacks as cover.
His figure appeared and disappeared at the boundary, and crossbow bolts kept hitting the places he passed. One even grazed his shoulder, bringing a burning pain.
He had no time to worry about any of that; he was already gripping the dagger in his hand, ready to fight to the death at any moment.
After Su Zhan rushed out of the last row of tents, the view in front of him suddenly opened up, but he also fell into an even greater crisis.
Ahead lay a bottomless abyss, its walls jagged and the wind howling.
Meanwhile, the thunderous sound of hooves echoed from both sides, and several guard cavalrymen had already surrounded them.
Their faces were painted with patterns symbolizing death, their eyes were cold, and the scimitars in their hands gleamed with a chilling light.
"Han dogs! Stop and die!" the leading centurion roared, blocking Su Zhan's only escape route.
The cavalry behind him quickly dispersed, forming a semi-circular encirclement.
The crossbow bolts were once again aimed at the lone Su Zhan.
Su Zhan looked coldly at what lay before him, knowing he was in dire straits.
This time, he had a near-death experience.
Su Zhan leaned against the cliff, the wind billowing his blood-stained robes, making them flutter loudly.
His gaze swept over the approaching enemies, estimating the distance and the opportune moment to strike.
His heart was pounding wildly, but his hand holding the knife remained as steady as a rock.
Death has brushed past him many times, but once the mission is complete, he must take his life back with him.
"Kill him!" The centurion waved his hand, his face contorted with rage, and gave the order.
The moment the bowstring was taut, Su Zhan moved.
Instead of rushing into the encirclement, he suddenly took a step towards the cliff, as if he was about to jump.
This sudden action caused the nearest archers to instinctively lower their crossbow bolts slightly, aiming at his possible landing point.
In that split second, Su Zhan twisted his body with incredible explosive force, his feet slamming against a protruding rock on the edge of the cliff. Like an arrow released from a bow, he didn't fall, but instead clung to the cliff against the gale, rushing towards the weakest corner of the encirclement on the left.
There were two cavalrymen standing close together. The cavalryman on the left was filled with shock and anger. He roared and then hurriedly swung his sword to slash.
The archers on the other side didn't react in time and could only hastily release their bows.
Su Zhan's figure was so fast that he left a blurry afterimage under the moonlight.
The short knife in his hand gleamed with a ghostly blue light, flashing past in the darkness.
With a soft "thud," the blade precisely pierced the throat of the unsuspecting cavalryman on the left, and scalding blood gushed out instantly.
Taking advantage of his forward momentum, Su Zhan grabbed the corpse and slammed his heavy body against another cavalryman who was swinging his sword from the right.
With a loud bang, a heavy impact sounded and shouts rang out at the same time.
The second cavalryman stumbled from the impact of the corpse, his sword strike instantly becoming scattered.
Taking advantage of the slight chaos created at the last moment, Su Zhan crouched down and passed under the bellies of the two frightened warhorses, completely breaking through the encirclement.
He even grabbed an arrow that had missed its mark and plunged it into the eye socket of an infantryman who was trying to intercept him.
Then, he sprinted forward.
Seeing this, the centurion's eyes widened in fury, and he roared, "Chase him! Don't let him get away!"
It's unbelievable that this assassin could tear a bloody gash in the midst of the battle in such a way.
However, this centurion also knew that the person who could take Huyan Zhuo's life amidst a vast army was no benevolent individual.
Such methods are not unusual.
Therefore, he must keep Su Zhan alive today and make him achieve this tremendous achievement.
Su Zhan, however, did not stop and ran wildly down a narrow path along the cliff edge, barely wide enough for one person to pass at a time.
Below him lay a dense, dark forest, his only hope for survival.
Behind him, the angry shouts of the guards, the sound of horses' hooves, and the whistling of arrows piercing the air clung to him like vengeful ghosts.
Cold sweat soaked through his clothes along with the blood, and with each breath, he felt his lungs exploding.
But his survival instinct and the will to shoulder the heavy responsibility sustained him, making him run desperately down the slope between the path and the rocks.
Another sharp whooshing sound rang out overhead, and an arrow silently approached.
Su Zhan quickly dodged, and then looked up at the sky. He saw a nimble falcon circling in the air, its eyes seemingly able to pierce through layers of darkness, locking onto the small figure on the cliff face.
Su Zhan's heart sank. He hadn't expected the grassland people to be so resourceful, using not only cavalry and hunting dogs, but even falcons. It was truly a trap.
The hunting of him by these grassland people had only just entered its bloodiest and most brutal phase.
Su Zhan knew that whether he would see the sun rise tomorrow depended on whether he could escape the most deadly pack of wolves on the grassland.
And those cold eyes in the sky were also watching him the whole time.
In other words, Su Zhan was now facing a life-or-death situation.
But Su Zhan couldn't stop. He knew he couldn't give up and he had to fight his way out of this desperate situation.
Without hesitation, Su Zhan ran towards the woods below the cliff.
The steppe people following closely behind him pounced on him like hungry wolves in the direction he went.
