Chapter 341 The Big Rat
Early in the morning, before the sun had even risen, during the hazy, dreamlike time, Ye Shu was running wildly on the rooftop with Jackie Chan when he suddenly felt someone pushing him.
As consciousness gradually returned, Ye Shu heard someone calling her name in a low but anxious voice.
"Ye Shu! Ye Shu... wake up..."
The voice was trembling, sounding like it was about to cry.
Ye Shu frowned, opened his eyes, and saw An Suxue kneeling on the bed, her face pale, staring at the direction of the bedroom door while pushing her own shoulder.
"Hmm? What's wrong, Xiaoxue?"
Ye Shu propped herself up on her arms and looked towards the door.
Seeing that he was finally alright, An Suxue felt like she had found her pillar of support and buried her head in his arms, hugging his waist.
She pointed tremblingly to the doorway:
"There's...there's a sound! There's been a constant noise coming from the doorway!"
Ye Shu yawned, her brain still in a forced-on state, and she felt that being thrown into someone's arms first thing in the morning was indeed quite nice.
But then she realized what was happening and turned her attention to the doorway.
He hadn't heard anything before, but now that he was awake, he could definitely hear some noise at the door, a clicking sound.
Ye Shu sighed. This was the downside of having a dog at home, especially a puppy that didn't understand much yet.
This is clearly a dog scratching at the door.
"Could it be... that mice have gotten into the house?"
An Suxue hugged him even tighter, almost sitting directly on his lap, practically curling herself into a little ball.
"It's been going on and on... what should I do, Ye Shu?"
Ye Shu patted An Suxue on the back with one hand and laughed:
"Yes, there was definitely movement. And judging from the force, it was probably a rat this... big."
He even gestured as he spoke.
Upon hearing this, An Suxue snuggled closer to Ye Shu, shaking her head as if she couldn't take it anymore.
Ye Shu smiled and patted An Suxue's back. She was hugging her so tightly that Ye Shu felt like she was having a little difficulty breathing.
"Don't be afraid, I'll go check it out. You wait here."
"No, no!"
An Su-xue wouldn't let go no matter what she said.
"It's okay, sweetie."
Ye Shu smiled and took An Suxue's arm off him. An Suxue slid into the quilt and wrapped herself up tightly, leaving only her eyes peeking out as she looked at the door.
Ye Shu moved to the bedside, picked up a cane from the headboard, and walked towards the door.
An Suxue hadn't noticed it while she was in bed, but now she saw the splint on Ye Shu's leg:
"Ye Shu, what happened to your leg... what happened to your foot?"
"I'll tell you later, I'll go catch a mouse for you first."
After saying that, Ye Shu, leaning on his cane, walked to the bedroom door.
An Suxue watched him limp toward the door, worried about his foot and afraid of the big rat at the door. She bit her lip in conflict and subconsciously shrank further into the quilt, only her eyes showing as she stared intently at Ye Shu.
When Ye Shu walked to the door, the little guy outside seemed to sense someone approaching, and the scratching and whimpering became even more anxious.
Ye Shu slowly opened the door. Potato Chips was still in the position of resting its two front paws on the door panel, tilting its head back and wagging its tail.
As soon as the door opened, Chips rushed over, rubbing its head against his trouser leg and making little noises.
Ye Shu realized yesterday that potato chips were just a spoiled brat, all they did was whine.
He slowly bent down and gently scooped up the potato chip, which was warm inside.
"Woof!"
Potato Chips suddenly barked, and because its limbs were off the ground, its four short legs immediately began to kick and paddle in mid-air as if swimming – this was the standard dog paddle.
An Suxue was very nervous at first, but after seeing the puppy in Ye Shu's hand, she was no longer afraid, but rather a little curious.
She looked at it more closely, and it really was a puppy.
A very small, chubby puppy.
"This is……"
An Suxue slowly crawled out of bed.
Are you afraid of dogs?
Ye Shu didn't immediately carry the dog over; instead, she asked a question first.
After all, he had never seen them keep cats or dogs before, nor had he ever heard them mention them, so he wasn't sure if Xiaoxue's feelings towards dogs would frighten her.
An Suxue shook her head.
"I'm not afraid."
Ye Shu was relieved. Carrying the potato chip that was still practicing dog-paddle, she limped back to the bedside on her crutches.
As soon as she got close, An Suxue acted as if she had an automatic pickup function, reaching out to take the potato chips from Ye Shu's hand.
Potato Chips couldn't tell that she wasn't the same person who fed her sausages yesterday; it only knew that her scent hadn't changed. So it affectionately rubbed against Xiaoxue's chest, wagging its tail and licking her fingers.
An Suxue held the dog in her arms, but her eyes never left the crutch in Ye Shu's hand and the splint on his foot.
"What happened to your foot? When did this happen?"
Ye Shu knew he couldn't avoid this matter, so he went back to bed and briefly recounted how it all started.
He then gave a general account of the whole incident, but kept emphasizing that it wasn't serious and that he would recover soon.
An Suxue listened attentively while touching the potato chips in her arms.
But as I listened, my state of mind started to go wrong.
She lowered her head, her hand that had been petting the dog slowly stopped, and then a tear fell onto the potato chip.
But she didn't make a sound; she just quietly shed tears.
The potato chips in her arms sensed the change in their owner's emotions, raised their little heads, and licked An Suxue's hand repeatedly.
"Hey, why are you crying? It's really nothing."
Ye Shu quickly went over and took two tissues from the bedside to wipe her tears.
An Suxue looked up at the splint on Ye Shu's ankle, and tears streamed down her face even more.
"You...you must have been in so much pain back then..."
She cried because she felt so sorry for herself.
This moved Ye Shu deeply, and he immediately said:
"It doesn't hurt anymore, look, I'm perfectly fine. In another week, I might be running all over the place."
An Suxue, holding potato chips, leaned forward and stared at his ankle without saying a word, as if she wanted to heal him with her mind.
"Alright, alright, stop looking. You can't conjure up anything by looking anymore."
Ye Shu reached out and put his arm around her shoulder, pulling her back a little.
An Suxue also leaned back, sniffed, nodded, and didn't say anything, but just rested her face on Ye Shu's body.
The potato chips in her arms licked her fingers, and An Suxue calmed down a bit before looking down at the potato chips and asking:
"Then...where did this puppy come from?"
Ye Shu quickly changed the subject, following her lead:
"Xia Qing found it downstairs yesterday. It seems to have gotten separated from the big dog. It looked so pitiful, and Xia Qing couldn't bear it, so she brought it back. She also named it Potato Chip."
An Suxue looked down at the little yellow dog in her arms. The color matched, but if she had to say, it didn't look like potato chips. Instead, it looked like the raw material, a potato.
Ye Shu also reached out and patted the dog's head on the potato chip stand, asking:
"Tell me, it's not even dawn yet, why are you scratching at the door instead of sleeping properly? What are you up to?"
Of course, the potato chip couldn't understand what "what are their intentions" meant. In fact, it didn't understand a single word. But when it saw that Ye Shu and An Suxue were both looking at it, it immediately barked at Ye Shu. The bark was quite crisp, and its little tail wagged even more enthusiastically.
Is it hungry?
"Very likely. I fed him last night before lunch, so he's probably already digested it."
Upon hearing this, An Suxue immediately got up, grabbed her potato chips, and headed outside.
After Ye Shu told her where the dog food was on the bed, An Suxue responded and left.
A little while later, An Suxue returned and smiled at Ye Shu:
"I was really hungry, and the food tasted delicious."
Ye Shu smiled, looking out the window at the barely dawning sky. It was still quite early. He patted the spot next to him and said:
"It's still daylight, let's sleep a little longer."
An Suxue climbed back into bed and found a comfortable position to lie down next to Ye Shu.
This time, however, her posture wasn't as unrestrained as before; An Suxue dodged Ye Shu's hands and feet.
