Chapter 11 Ninjas? Why would there be ninjas?
Ah... that's killing the conversation.
After all, anyone with a little common sense can easily see through the essence of the conflict between mutants and humans. Simply put, it's not about scarcity but about inequality. Unlike Spider-Man and Hulk, who are superhumans created later in life, mutants are individuals with millions of them who are born with extraordinary abilities. If there had been such a concept since ancient times, that would be one thing, but the most critical problem lies precisely here—they only began to appear in the public eye on a large scale in the 20th century.
Can modern humans tolerate a group of "supermen" who can easily undermine public safety and the law? The answer is no. Even in ancient Egypt, under the rule of Apocalypse, the progenitor of mutants, there were king killers who were not afraid of death. How can humans thousands of years later still kneel on the ground as slaves?
Of course, mutants are not necessarily destined to be irreconcilable enemies with humans forever. After all, their cultural foundations are essentially the same. After a long period of conflict and adjustment, as long as they can continue to exist, Earth's civilization can find a truly viable path and develop to a level unimaginable in modern times.
But that would be pure grand narrative.
The term "adjustment period" sounds trivial, but when you look at it closely, every single step is built upon countless corpses and bloodshed, and the number of people who sacrificed themselves for it is absolutely astronomical.
On a grander scale, the two directions within the mutant community—the Brotherhood and Xavier's Academy for Gifted Youngsters—are precisely different interpretations of the term "adjustment period."
Professor Charles was a kind-hearted man, so he tended to use gentle methods to find a path to peace without bloodshed.
Eric is an extremist and has been deeply influenced by Nazi ideology, so he wants mutants to gain dominance.
Looking deeper, both of these approaches are actually feasible to some extent.
Needless to say, if the professor were to abandon all moral boundaries and join Jean Grey in a large-scale brainwashing of the human elite, or even humanity as a whole, they could indeed create an incredibly solemn order—of course, whether they would be overthrown halfway through by some overpowered genius is another matter entirely.
As for Magneto... to put it bluntly, if he could just please his daughter (Wanda) and find a way to recruit a few Omega-level mutants to join him, he could easily carry Earth's civilization around like a ball—of course, whether he would be knocked down by some overpowered guy who suddenly appeared along the way is another matter entirely.
"This is what a dead end looks like."
Mason shrugged: "Humans and mutants come from the same source, so it's only natural that they would clash—in fact, it's absurd that they've been able to remain peaceful until the 21st century. If you ask me, unless aliens come in spaceships and say they want to take over Earth, the conflict between the two sides is unlikely to end for at least several centuries."
"And what about you?"
Lorna asked in a low voice, "You don't seem to have any problem with mutants?"
"Clocking in at work is busy enough. Who in their right mind spends all their time thinking about how to discriminate against others?" Mason rolled his eyes. "Mutants are a physiological characteristic, not a cultural phenomenon. So even if some mutant offends me, the hatred should be directed at that individual. Why target the entire race?"
"..."
She remained silent for a long time, then sighed heavily: "If everyone in the world were like you... there wouldn't be so many tragedies, would there?"
"Yeah?"
Mason narrowed his eyes and said meaningfully, "Maybe I'm actually a very terrifying bad guy?"
"A bad person wouldn't say that about themselves, would they?"
Lorna looked up, stared at Mason for a while, then suddenly leaned closer to him and said with interest, "Problems that can't be solved are boring. How about we talk about you?"
A beautiful face suddenly came close, carrying a fresh scent like clover, which complemented her hair color perfectly—from a rational point of view, it should be considered that she was marinated in perfume, but Mason, who had not yet escaped his low-level tastes, was indeed slightly moved by this beauty.
"Ahem..." He coughed lightly, adopting a deliberately profound tone to manage his composure. "What do you mean?"
"I've never seen Logan react so strongly to a stranger he's just met—what's a curse? I've heard that there are indeed some supernatural beings in the world in a mystical sense, but I've never seen one with my own eyes."
"If I remember correctly... your famous uncle just suggested that you stay away from me, right?"
Mason's lips twitched slightly. "Besides, that's not exactly an entertaining topic. You might even catch a curse after hearing it. Aren't you scared?"
"Hmph... I don't remember agreeing to anything like that."
Lorna's lips curled into a smile, instantly dispelling her gloomy mood and revealing a bright smile: "To hell with Logan and the professor, I can decide what I want to do myself—and I'm actually quite capable, I don't believe that curses can harm a hair on my head."
If you said that in a horror movie, you'd probably be dead all over the place after one or two scene transitions.
"Have you heard of the 'Ode to Gallantry'... oh wait, I mean the story of the 'Cursed Videotape'?"
After a moment's thought, Mason said with an air of seriousness, "Whoever has seen the video will, within seven years..."
"Within seven years...?" Lorna blinked and repeated the question.
"What a terrible fate it would be to lose all the hair on your body!" Mason suddenly shouted in a fierce voice.
Lorna just blinked blankly: "...That's it?"
Mason retorted, "What do you mean 'that's all'? This is one of the most horrific tortures imaginable!"
"But it feels pretty much the same as working overtime at any random software engineering company," Lorna tilted her head. "Where would you find such a casual curse?"
"So, after watching this, you'll die of a heart attack within seven days?"
"...The Ring?" Lorna slowly typed a question mark. "Does Sadako really exist?"
"You see, people would rather believe a white-clad female ghost crawls out of the TV than believe that a hair loss curse exists in the world." Mason shrugged. "That's why I don't like to talk about this with others."
"..."
Since hair loss is a somewhat absurd topic, Lorna didn't know what kind of expression to make for a moment. After struggling for a while, she could only say something like, "Please go to the doctor as soon as possible."
However, after discussing two important (questionable) topics, their relationship improved somewhat. They then spent the rest of their time reading books while chatting casually, which could be considered a preliminary step towards becoming friends.
The day passed quickly. After dark, Lorna fell asleep at ten o'clock, while Mason continued to search for information on the Internet, enriching his knowledge and sketching the shape of the world in his mind.
Sure enough, even in the Marvel Universe, it's not common for anyone to be so depraved as to cause trouble in a hospital.
If this peace continues, by the time I'm discharged from the hospital, I'll have accumulated a dozen or so gifts from another world. Not to mention, if I could draw even one or two items that could enhance my personal combat abilities, my career as a dual-role agent would be secure.
Around midnight, a slightly sleepy Mason planted a huge flag, and then—
"Snapped!"
Suddenly all the lights in the entire hospital went out.
A power outage? No way, this is a hospital!
Suppressing his ominous premonition, Mason thought to himself with a sense of schadenfreude.
But then, a faint smell of sulfur suddenly wafted to Mason's nose.
A faint black mist rose from the dimly lit room and converged towards the doorway.
Power was subsequently restored to the hospital.
But a man in black stood with his hands behind his back at the doorway. He was completely wrapped in black cloth, even his face was covered with a mask. He had scrolls, darts and other small props on his shoulder strap, and two katana of different lengths hanging from his waist.
Well... it really fits the stereotypical image of a certain Japanese profession perfectly.
