Chapter 43 Charles Xavier
"Now?"
Mason paused for a moment, then looked up at the rising sun: "Isn't this... a bit rude?"
"They don't do that kind of thing at the college."
Logan waved his hand: "Besides, the professor's brain is the most powerful in the world. It's easy for him to rotate and rest different brain regions like a dolphin, so you can go see him anytime."
"Then you guys go ahead," Lorna said, pouting. "I'm going to find a dorm to sleep in; I haven't slept a wink all day."
"At least go and say hello to the professor..."
"Aren't you afraid I'll kick him out of his wheelchair?" She rolled her eyes and walked away without looking back.
"You really are..."
Old Wolf hesitated, raising his hand to stop her, but Storm pressed him down: "Forget it, let her go. It's already a big step forward that she's willing to come back with us."
This behavior made Mason even more curious about what had happened to this group of people in the past—normally, even in America, a child who rebels like this would get a slap in the face, so why did these elders look like they had something difficult to say? But to say that they had fallen out didn't seem to be the case at all, and the truth was really puzzling.
So he asked directly, "What exactly is this...?"
“Something happened before,” Logan sighed. “It’s complicated, and if she didn’t tell you, it’s not our place to tell you—never mind, go see the professor. Whatever you want to do, you have to see the professor first.”
Mason nodded: "Then I'll trouble you to lead the way."
He then followed Logan toward the main building in the center of the academy, while Storm went to tidy up the helipad.
Taking this opportunity, Mason asked Kuroishi Kasumi with a hint of unease, "Is the mental protection still working? We can relax our guard elsewhere, but we absolutely cannot here."
"Don't worry, don't worry. Since it's your request, I'll protect your mind 24/7." She gave a rather playful reply, but then her voice turned serious. "Speaking of which, do you really want to stay here? I've discovered several very powerful energy sources within a few kilometers. The most powerful one even has a hint of some kind of cosmic catastrophe—let me be clear, I can't withstand that kind of thing."
"A cosmic catastrophe?"
"It looks somewhat like a bird's shape... Hmm, I'm not a specialist in perception, so all I can tell is that it's an extremely high-density collection of unknown energy." She said, slightly puzzled. "What's going on with this Earth you're on, guest? It seems even more terrifying than the one that's connected to the Star of Light."
The shape of a bird, the power of a phoenix?
One super beast really can't withstand that... But just like the Scarlet Witch mentioned earlier, when the crisis reaches a certain level, running away is useless. It's better to cheer up and say something like, "Being able to witness a battle of the strong is worth dying for," at least to elevate your own style before you die.
"Please show some respect for Earth," Mason said, head held high. "While the civilization level here may be low, their talent for creating chaos is definitely not inferior to others—it wouldn't be surprising if a super bomb that would detonate along with the entire universe were to appear tomorrow!"
"Is...is that so?"
Mason then followed Logan through the grand gates into a place that resembled more of a noble mansion than a teaching facility, and then walked down an empty corridor to an office deep inside the mansion.
"Professor," Logan knocked on the door, "Lorna is back, but there was a little mishap on the way. You'd better find out."
"Come in." A kind voice belonging to an elderly person came from inside, and then the door slowly opened under the drive of a motor, showing the scene inside to the two people outside.
The antique style, reminiscent of warmth, appears slightly cluttered due to the piles of documents. A wooden desk stands by the window, behind which sits an elderly, bald man—Charles Xavier, the most powerful psychic under normal circumstances, the leader of the X-Men, and an Alpha-class mutant.
Good morning, Logan.
Charles nodded gently and said, "You must be tired from this trip. Get some rest afterward."
"It wasn't a big deal, just a fight with Victor." Logan chuckled. "This time I came out on top and got my revenge for what happened last time."
Victor? Does that refer to Sabretooth (Victor Creed)? He is indeed Logan's old rival, but I wonder if the two are brothers in this world.
"Have you found out what Eric is up to?"
"No, all I know is that his last public appearance was at a hotel in Washington, and he has disappeared since then."
"...It seems our old friend is indeed planning something big this time."
Charles sighed, then looked at Mason and asked, "So, who is this young man?"
"He is Lorna's friend."
Logan briefly recounted what he had learned, and the professor listened, nodding as he went. After he finished, he looked at Mason again and slowly said, "To summarize, Mason, do you still want to join the X-Men after learning about the current situation at the Academy?"
"That's exactly right."
Mason nodded and said, "I feel this place suits my taste better than S.H.I.E.L.D. I've found a suitable opportunity to switch jobs, so why not cherish it?"
"Okay, I understand."
The professor closed his eyes, pondered for a while, and then smiled and said, "In principle, the academy welcomes anyone with similar interests to join us, because this is actually a place where like-minded people help each other and support each other, so there are very few complicated rules and regulations. However, even so, some necessary procedures still need to be followed."
"I understand, I understand, this is perfectly normal."
"So... well, you'll just follow S.H.I.E.L.D.'s original plan and work as a teacher for a while, getting to know the people at the academy before we talk about the next steps. No matter how much you yearn for a certain lifestyle, a certain level of understanding is necessary, isn't it?" Charles said slowly. "Of course, I'll keep your identity a secret from the students. For the time being, you're the only teacher from S.H.I.E.L.D., so there's no need to worry about it being exposed through other channels. What do you think?"
Mason: "..."
To be honest, this is a very reliable solution.
Before entering the room, Mason was even prepared for the professor to yell at him and then give him a mental blast. However, the professor did not show any hostility. Instead, he learned about the situation in a very equal manner and offered a solution that would be very beneficial in the long run.
In terms of willingness, he was very willing to accept the offer, but the problem remained the same—
Become a teacher? Me?
What can I teach them? Although I'm actually a fairly skilled software engineer, that doesn't really fit into Cecilia's resume...
"Speaking of which..." Mason coughed lightly, "I don't even know if there are any faculty positions available at the academy."
“Physics, sociology, and physical education,” Charles replied immediately. “S.H.I.E.L.D. sent me a message saying that the instructors this time are from MIT, and are exceptionally talented with expertise in a wide range of subjects. Therefore, I hope that Mr. Mason can teach all three subjects at the same time, with about four hundred students—you don’t need to be involved in management, just teach.”
"..."
Mason's mindset at this moment is like someone who just bragged on their resume and got hired—sociology and sports might work if he put in the effort, but how do he handle physics, something that requires substance and will be exposed after a few sentences?
He quickly brainstormed and finally came up with a solution that was hardly a solution.
"Besides hiring someone with physical strength..." he asked Kuroishi Kasumi in his mind, "Can you take on jobs writing lesson plans? For human high school level physics."
Kuroshi Kasumi: "Guest, you need to understand that although I have some more functions than the older model, I am still ultimately a weapon of war, and that's something..."
"Is it possible or not?"
"...It's not a matter of whether it's possible or not, the main problem is that there's no corresponding pricing model, understand?"
For some reason, her voice sounded slightly flustered.
Has their weakness been exposed?
But Mason, having run out of options, couldn't think of any other way. Unlike the Hydra mortals, he obviously couldn't fool Professor Charles with a concussion or something similar. So he either had to come up with a solution or come up with a new, perhaps unreliable, reason. And he had to make a decision in the blink of an eye.
"So, what's the answer?"
"I can give it a try," Kuroshi Kasumi replied through gritted teeth, "but I can't guarantee the quality."
