This miracle doctor just wants to be fired!
Chapter 107 Refusing Overtime Starts with Me
What reassured Zhou Cheng was that the patient's condition stabilized after one epileptic seizure.
He was fully conscious, his vital signs had gradually stabilized, his heart rate had risen to about 60 beats per minute, and his blood oxygen saturation was maintained above 95% with high-flow oxygen therapy.
At least before he left work, no other unexpected situations occurred.
Zhou Cheng and his two teammates, Chen Xi and Li Yang, spent almost the entire day focusing on this 14-year-old girl.
From the morning's emergency treatment and coordination of various examinations, to the preparation for the hospital-wide consultation and the reporting of medical history, and then to the issuance of subsequent examination orders and communication with the family, there was hardly any time to even drink a sip of water.
Even so, there is still no clear diagnosis. The key indicators from today's expedited blood tests will not be available until tomorrow morning at the earliest.
It was 5:30 PM, time to leave work.
Zhou Cheng carefully explained the 14-year-old girl's condition to the night shift doctor, and made a detailed record in the handover log to ensure that nothing was missed.
After doing all this, he breathed a sigh of relief and turned to walk towards the doctors' lounge.
A few minutes later, Zhou Cheng changed into his casual clothes.
As I walked out of the break room and headed towards the door, I found that the doctor's office was still brightly lit, and Fang Hang and the other doctors in the department were still busy at their respective workstations, showing no sign of leaving get off work.
Some were organizing medical records, some were checking doctor's orders, and others were printing relevant materials; none of them showed any sign of leaving.
"Senior, aren't you going home?" Zhou Cheng walked into the doctor's office and looked at Fang Hang, who was typing on the keyboard in front of the computer, with a hint of doubt in his voice.
He glanced at his colleagues around him; everyone looked exhausted, yet they were still forcing themselves to keep busy.
Upon hearing Zhou Cheng's voice, Fang Hang slowly raised his head and saw that he had already changed into his regular clothes. His face immediately showed a rather surprised expression: "Junior brother, have you forgotten? This morning, the director specifically emphasized during the morning meeting that starting today, everyone must gather in the department's main conference room after get off work every evening to study the relevant knowledge of the tertiary hospital review. Everyone must attend; no one can be absent."
Zhou Cheng only remembered after hearing Fang Hang's words.
Director Wang Jianming did mention this matter during the morning meeting, but he had just taken over the patient today and was preoccupied with the details of the rescue and treatment. Coupled with a busy day, he had long forgotten about it.
He was so exhausted today that he was practically falling apart, and he simply didn't have the energy to sit in the meeting room and listen to the dry lectures on the review process.
Moreover, he never intended to stay in the first place.
As long as the system doesn't pop up a notification to block him, he can openly and legitimately refuse such unreasonable overtime requests.
"Senior brother, I have some things to take care of at home, so I probably won't be working overtime today," Zhou Cheng said.
As he said this, he kept an eye on the system to make sure no "violation" notification popped up.
After confirming that no "violation" notification popped up, Zhou Cheng felt completely at ease and turned to walk towards the door.
Seeing that he had no intention of staying, Fang Hang quickly stopped his work, got up and hurried after him, lowering his voice to dissuade him: "Junior brother, don't be impulsive! The director specifically emphasized that everyone must participate. If you leave directly, you will definitely be criticized by name tomorrow, and it won't be good for your probationary period assessment."
Zhou Cheng paused, turned around to look at Fang Hang, who was looking anxious, and said with a smile, "Senior brother, I know you're worried about me, but I'm just too tired today. I've been busy since this morning, and my brain is completely fried. Even if I stayed to study, I wouldn't be able to concentrate. It would be a complete waste of time."
"But...but it's hard to explain to the director." Fang Hang wanted to persuade him further, but his brows were tightly furrowed.
During his time in the lab as a doctor, he had long been accustomed to this kind of impromptu overtime work and knew the consequences of arguing with his superiors.
"Don't worry, I'll handle anything." Zhou Cheng smiled at him. "I've already handed over the patient's case clearly. The night shift doctor will contact me promptly if there are any follow-up issues. I'm going back to rest now, and I'll come back early tomorrow morning to follow up on the test results."
After saying that, he didn't linger and walked straight out of the office.
Zhou Cheng's actions were like a pebble thrown into a calm lake, instantly silencing the once busy doctor's office.
All the colleagues stopped what they were doing, looked up in surprise at Zhou Cheng's departing figure.
In their minds, especially during the critical period of the tertiary hospital review, no one dared to disobey the tasks assigned by the director, let alone refuse to work overtime.
"Has Zhou Cheng gone mad? How dare he just leave like that?" A young doctor whispered to his colleague next to him.
"Yes, this was a special training session that the director emphasized. How dare he skip it? Isn't he afraid it will affect his probationary period assessment and prevent him from becoming a permanent employee?" Another doctor chimed in, his tone tinged with worry and confusion.
Some people speculated, "Could it be that he was too tired today and couldn't keep going? After all, he was watching that critically ill patient the whole day, which was definitely more tiring than all of us."
"Could it be that he doesn't want to stay here anymore? I heard he was under a lot of pressure during his probation period, and that patient's family member even caused him trouble before. Could it be that he wants to resign voluntarily, so he doesn't care about these things anymore?" Another guess also emerged.
Fang Hang stood there, watching Zhou Cheng's figure disappear at the end of the corridor, and sighed helplessly.
He knew Zhou Cheng's personality; once he made a decision, he wouldn't easily change it. He could only turn to his colleagues and explain, "He's really too tired today. Don't overthink it. Let's finish what we're doing and go to the meeting room. Let's not keep the director waiting."
Meanwhile, Zhou Cheng had already walked out of the hospital.
The evening breeze brushed against my cheeks, taking away some of my fatigue.
He looked up at the sunset on the horizon and felt exceptionally relaxed.
Refuse to work overtime, starting with me!
……
At this moment, in the conference room, a printed learning manual for the review of the top-tier hospital was placed on the table, and the projector had been set up and was ready to begin learning once everyone had arrived.
Just then, the conference room door was pushed open, and the department director, Wang Jianming, walked in.
His expression was quite serious. His gaze swept across the entire room as he walked steadily toward the head seat.
The already quiet conference room became even more silent, and everyone subconsciously sat up straight, their eyes all turning to him.
Just as Wang Jianming was about to sit down, his brow suddenly furrowed slightly, and he looked around again: "Is everyone here?"
The head nurse, Zhao Chunmei, quickly stood up to count the number of people. After counting, she whispered and reported, "Director Wang, apart from the medical staff on duty, only Dr. Zhou Cheng is missing."
"Zhou Cheng?" Wang Jianming's tone instantly turned cold, a hint of displeasure flashing in his eyes. "I specifically emphasized everyone's attendance this morning, why isn't he here? Where did he go?"
His gaze fell on Fang Hang, who was sitting in the front row. He was obviously aware that the two were close and probably knew the situation.
