penicillin.

These three words were like three steel needles, piercing deeply into Ye Zhen's chaotic mind.

Her fingers, gripping the wall, clenched unconsciously, her nails almost digging into the cold plaster.

[Penicillin again. A classic frame-up tactic, lousy but effective.]

Ye Zhen sneered inwardly, but her face remained completely expressionless. She raised her bloodshot eyes and looked at Gu Zheng, her voice hoarse as if it were filled with sand, yet frighteningly calm.

"Have you seen the autopsy report?"

"Has your allergy history been verified?"

"Where is the injection site?"

Three questions in a row, quick, accurate, and ruthless, not a single word wasted, all aimed at the vital points.

Xiao Wang, listening nearby, was terrified. What is this "expert Ye" made of? Shouldn't a normal woman be trembling with fear in this situation? Why is she acting like an old forensic doctor, immediately launching into the procedures?

The storm in Gu Zheng's eyes subsided instantly, replaced by a scorching heat that he himself was unaware of.

This woman is something else.

He thought he was trying to calm a frightened cat, but it turned out to be a leopard ready to hunt.

"The report isn't out yet," Gu Zheng's voice was as steady as a mountain, instantly calming the situation. "His file doesn't show any history of penicillin allergy. At the scene, in the office wastebasket, we found used penicillin bottles and syringes."

The attempt to cover up the truth only made things worse, revealing numerous flaws.

But for a system that only wants quick convictions, that's enough.

Ye Zhen's lips curled into a cold smile: "Acute anaphylactic shock. Lividity is a distinctive purplish-red, there will be severe laryngeal edema, and pulmonary emphysema. Most importantly, the office isn't an injection room. He's a political commissar of the military region; who would dare to give him an intravenous injection without a skin test? Do they think our military region's medics are just for show?"

With each word she spoke, the light in Gu Zheng's eyes shone a little brighter.

These professional counterattacks are more effective than shouting "I'm innocent!" a hundred times.

"You don't need to worry about these things." Gu Zheng suddenly stepped forward, his tall shadow completely enveloping her and blocking all the probing gazes in the corridor. He reached out, took the cold lunchbox from her hand, and handed it to Xiao Wang.

"Now, come with me." His tone was still commanding.

Ye Zhen didn't move.

Gu Zheng turned his head to look at her, thinking she was going to be stubborn again, but he saw her take out a pen and notebook from the pocket of her white coat, walk to the ICU door, and quickly record on the electrocardiogram monitor in the glass window.

"Heart rate 78, blood pressure 110/75, blood oxygen 96%. The patient is stable."

After she finished writing, she handed the notebook and pen to the bewildered Dean Zhou and calmly instructed, "Dean Zhou, from now on, record information every half hour. No one except you and Xiao Wang is allowed to touch the equipment. Until I return."

After saying that, she turned around and looked at Gu Zheng, her gaze clear and firm: "Let's go."

She may leave, but she will not yield an inch of her battlefield.

Gu Zheng's heart was struck hard.

He said nothing, leaning on his crutches, he turned and walked ahead, using his injured leg to clear a path for her step by step.

The two walked one after the other through the deathly silent corridor.

The doctors and nurses around them kept their distance as if they had seen a ghost, their eyes filled with a mixture of fear and pity.

Political Commissar Zhang is dead. He died from penicillin.

Who doesn't know that the newly arrived expert Ye just got into a fight with Political Commissar Zhang's men outside the ICU yesterday?

This basin of dirty water was poured out quickly and forcefully.

Gu Zheng led Ye Zhen into a temporary, private office. Once the door closed, the world became quiet.

"Sit down," Gu Zheng said, pointing to the sofa.

Ye Zhen didn't sit down. She walked to the window and looked at the police tape that had been put up on the lawn downstairs.

"They acted very quickly." Gu Zheng's voice came from behind. "My men just reported that the Security Department has set up a special task force, led by Li Jian."

Ye Zhen turned around: "Li Jian?"

"The Security Department's 'sword' is notoriously incorruptible and impervious to reason." Gu Zheng's tone was unusually somber. "He only looks at evidence and rules. Now, all the evidence points to you."

Ye Zhen remained silent.

She wasn't afraid of intrigue, but she hated rules. Because sometimes, rules are like a knife that kills without drawing blood.

Just then—

"Knock knock knock".

The knocking was very rhythmic.

Xiao Wang's expression changed, and he immediately stood in front of the two.

Gu Zheng gave him a look that told him not to panic.

"Enter."

The door was pushed open.

A middle-aged man in a crisp military uniform, carrying two bars and three stars on his shoulders, walked in. His features were ordinary, but his eyes were like an eagle's; they swept around the room before finally fixing on Ye Zhen.

Behind him followed two expressionless clerks.

"Commander Gu." He nodded to Gu Zheng, his attitude neither warm nor cold.

He is Li Jian.

"Oh, Minister Li, what an air of authority! What brings you here?" Gu Zheng leaned against the table and spoke lazily.

Li Jian completely ignored him and walked straight up to Ye Zhen, stopping a meter away. He spoke in a businesslike manner: "Comrade Ye Zhen, my name is Li Jian, Minister of the Military Region Security Department. Now, on behalf of the special investigation team, I am officially informing you that you are suspected of being involved in the unnatural death of Political Commissar Zhang Zhenguo and need to come back with us for investigation."

His voice was as cold as a machine.

The word "investigation" was emphasized heavily and firmly.

If Dean Zhou heard this, he'd faint on the spot. Entering the security department is like being skinned alive, if not killed!

Ye Zhen looked at him without saying a word.

The air in the room froze instantly.

The two officers behind Li Jian had already reached for their waists.

However, one hand was faster.

Gu Zheng had moved to Ye Zhen's side without anyone noticing. He placed his uninjured left hand on her shoulder and subtly pulled her behind him.

A simple action, yet it conveyed the message: "Mine, don't touch."

"Minister Li," Gu Zheng looked up, his laziness vanishing completely, replaced by an aura of impending storm, "How come I didn't know that your security department could bypass my headquarters and come here to arrest people?"

Li Jian's gaze finally shifted from Ye Zhen to Gu Zheng's face.

Their eyes met, and sparks flew.

"Reporting to Commander Gu," Li Jian's tone remained as stern as ever, "we are acting according to regulations. Comrade Ye Zhen is the prime suspect in this case, and we have the right to place her under 24-hour isolation and investigation."

"Oh? A suspect?" Gu Zheng laughed, but his laughter was icy cold. "Where's the evidence? Just a broken medicine bottle? Or is it just because she didn't give your master face yesterday?"

Li Jian's pupils suddenly contracted.

Gu Zheng gave him no chance to react, tightening his grip on Ye Zhen's shoulder and taking a step forward. His leg, in a cast, was rooted to the ground like a battle axe, exuding a terrifying aura.

He leaned close to Li Jian's ear, his voice low but sharp, each word like a knife, carrying a bloodthirsty madness:

"Go back and tell the people behind you to stop using the rules as a weapon."

"She is someone I, Gu Zheng, will protect."

He paused for a moment, each word seemingly squeezed out from between his teeth, carrying a ruthless ferocity.

"Want to touch her? Fine. But first, step over my dead body."
