Ye Cheng's fever subsided, but the Ye family's rice jar was completely empty.

For breakfast, there was only a bowl of clear rice porridge on the table, so thin you could see your reflection in it. Li Cuifang scooped an extra half spoonful of rice for Ye Zhen, but Ye Zhen frowned.

This amount of nutrition simply cannot keep up with the demands of wound healing.

She was pondering whether to first try to go to the city to sell some of the herbs, or to go back into the mountains to find something to exchange for money, when the courtyard gate was suddenly pushed open with a loud "bang".

The visitor was again my second aunt, Liu Fen.

This time, however, she wasn't alone; a middle-aged man carrying a brand-new medicine box and with an arrogant expression followed behind her. Liu Fen walked ahead with her back straight, acting like a bully, her nostrils practically pointing to the sky.

"Brother and sister-in-law! I was afraid you'd delay A-Cheng's treatment, so I specially invited Dr. Wang from the town clinic to come here!" Her voice was shrill, as if she wanted half the village to hear her. "Let Dr. Wang give A-Cheng a 'last look.' If it really doesn't work, listen to me, and amputate his leg quickly. Don't let him lose his life!"

As soon as Dr. Wang entered the courtyard, he frowned in disgust, pulled a clean handkerchief from his pocket, and covered his mouth and nose, as if the air itself reeked of poverty. He drooped his eyelids, not even bothering to look at the patient in the bed, and immediately made his judgment:

"No need to see him. I heard about it when you went to the clinic to get medicine yesterday. He suffered a comminuted fracture from being hit by rocks, and it took a whole day and night to get treatment. He's definitely infected now. In this condition, even a miracle can't save him." He glanced at the despairing Ye Guoliang and his wife and said in a condescending tone, "Prepare for the worst. Or, you could have him amputated now, and that might save his life."

Ye Guoliang's nascent hope was instantly shattered. His lips trembled as he tried to say something.

A slender yet upright figure blocked the doorway.

Ye Zhen stepped forward at some point, and the old, faded shirt she was wearing gave her the aura of a white lab coat.

"Dr. Wang, right?" Her voice was cold. "You didn't even examine the wound, didn't even feel the pulse, and just went straight to making a diagnosis. Did you buy your medical license from a supply and marketing cooperative?"

Dr. Wang was taken aback by the barbed remark, his face instantly turning red. He glared at her angrily, "What do you know, you little brat! You've only learned a few dabbles in barefoot medicine, and you dare question me? I don't even need to look at that leg; it's rotten to the bone!"

As he spoke, he reached out to lift the thin blanket covering Ye Cheng's legs, his movements extremely rude, showing no regard for the patient as a human being.

"stop!"

Ye Zhen's eyes turned cold, and she quickly stepped forward and grabbed his wrist.

Dr. Wang felt his wrist being gripped by a cold hand. He tried to break free, but found that the other person wasn't very strong, yet the force was used extremely skillfully, rendering him unable to move. Just as he was about to exert force, Ye Zhen gently flipped her wrist and twisted it in the opposite direction.

"Aww!"

A pig-like scream echoed through the courtyard. Dr. Wang's face turned pale with pain, and cold sweat poured down his back. This blow hurt more than a beating.

"You can look if you want." Ye Zhen released her grip, looking at him coldly. "After you've seen it, what will you say if my brother's leg gets better?"

Dr. Wang clutched his numb wrist, wincing in pain. Desperate to save face, he gritted his teeth and roared, "If it gets better, I...I'll eat this whole medicine box right here! If it breaks, you'll kneel down and apologize immediately, admitting you're a quack who spouts nonsense!"

The villagers who had gathered around to watch the spectacle gasped upon hearing this.

Ye Zhen's lips curled into a cold smile, a smile full of contempt.

"I don't need your medicine box, I find it dirty," she said indifferently. "Just get out of Black Mountain Village and don't ever come back again."

This is even worse than using a first-aid kit; it's cutting off his source of income!

Dr. Wang was so angry his face turned purple. He stubbornly said, "Fine! It's a deal! Uncover it! Let everyone see, sweet talk can't make a leg healed!"

All eyes were focused on the thin blanket.

Liu Fen craned her neck, her face filled with undisguised schadenfreude, waiting to see the bloody, rotten flesh oozing pus when the blanket was lifted.

Ye Zhen walked to the bedside and, under the breathless gaze of everyone, peeled away the gauze covering the wound, layer by layer.

However, the expected stench did not materialize.

When the last layer of gauze was removed, revealing the injured leg underneath, the entire courtyard fell into a deathly silence.

Although the wound that Ye Zhen had cleaned was still gruesome, the horrifying redness and swelling around it had subsided considerably. Even more astonishingly, a ring of fine, pinkish, fresh granulation tissue had grown around the edge of the wound! The entire wound was dry and clean, without a trace of pus!

This is irrefutable proof that the wound is healing rapidly!

"This...this..." Dr. Wang's eyes widened, his eyeballs almost popping out of their sockets. He rubbed his eyes in disbelief, leaned closer, his mouth slightly open, and muttered to himself, "This is impossible! This is absolutely impossible! This doesn't conform to medical common sense!"

A comminuted fracture, with the best treatment time delayed, no antibiotics, no professional suturing—how could it not get infected? How could it heal so quickly?!

Ye Zhen didn't even glance at him. She casually picked up the used gauze and tossed it into the wooden basin beside her. The sound wasn't loud, but it clearly reached everyone's ears.

"Wound cleaning and drainage, and infection control are the most basic surgical knowledge."

She raised her eyes, her gaze piercing Dr. Wang with the precision of a scalpel.

"You can't do it because you're useless."

"coax!"

The surrounding villagers were stunned for half a second, then burst into laughter. The laughter was like countless slaps to Dr. Wang's face.

His face turned from red to purple, then from purple to white, and finally became as red as a pig's liver. Amid the pointing fingers and laughter of the villagers, he could no longer stay. He grabbed the medicine box on the ground and practically tumbled and crawled out of the Ye family's courtyard, looking as pathetic as a stray dog.

Liu Fen was completely dumbfounded.

Seeing her backer run away and herself become the laughingstock of everyone, her face turned pale and then red, and she shrank back, trying to sneak away.

Just as she turned around, a cool voice rang out slowly behind her.

Second Aunt.

Liu Fen froze.

Ye Zhen crossed her arms and leaned against the doorframe, looking at her calmly: "You paid for Dr. Wang's consultation fee earlier, didn't you? It was one yuan, don't forget."

She paused, a slight smile playing on her lips.

"Take care, and don't bother seeing me off."

Liu Fen felt a lump in her throat; the one yuan she'd been cheated out of felt like her heart, liver, spleen, and lungs were throbbing with pain. She stomped her foot angrily and slunk away amidst the villagers' laughter.
