Chapter 26 Getting something for nothing
Liang Kun couldn't stand his behavior any longer and said to Jiang Tiansheng, "Mr. Jiang, our Hung Hing is a respectable triad now. Can't we set some rules? From now on, people who dress casually and don't know manners shouldn't be allowed into the Hall of Righteousness, so as not to embarrass Guan Yu and the ancestors of Hung Hing. People who don't know better will think that our Hung Hing is getting worse with each generation, producing only unruly and disrespectful people."
He pointed at Fatty Lai without any politeness: "Look at him! He was picking his toes and smelling his hands in public just now, and now he's covering his crotch... He's supposed to be a leader of a Hung Hing branch. If word gets out, people will think all the leaders of Hung Hing are like this!"
Fatty Li trembled with rage, struggling and hissing, "Who...who hit me like this?!"
He wanted to muddy the waters.
Handsome Kun wasn't intimidated at all: "I took the call!"
Ye Tian immediately replied, "I did the call."
The hall masters who had just laid a hand on him all answered lazily in unison, "I did it."
Fatty Li stared wide-eyed at those faces that seemed to take it all for granted, a lump forming in his throat, almost making him faint.
Handsome Kun's face revealed undisguised sarcasm: "When you're in this business, you have to follow the rules. If you're wrong, admit it; if you get beaten, stand your ground. You're supposed to be a gang leader, and you don't even understand this basic principle? If you were my underling, you'd have been thrown into the sea to feed the fish long ago."
Ye Tian added quietly from the side, "We in Mong Kok don't need underlings like this. They don't even qualify to join the Hung Society."
The two of them, working together, belittled Fatty Li to the point of being worthless.
Jiang Tiansheng coughed twice, interrupting them: "Alright, let's put aside personal grudges for now in the Hall of Righteousness. But remember the rules: if your two branches really want to fight, that's fine, but stop when you've made your point. No one is allowed to die."
Liang Kun and Ye Tian immediately composed themselves and replied formally, "Yes, Mr. Jiang."
Jiang Tiansheng nodded, somewhat satisfied.
Fat Lai, his heart filled with boundless hatred, gritted his teeth and forced out each word: "Fine...fine! My North Point will fight your Mong Kok! A tribal war!"
Liang Kun ignored him and picked up his teacup.
Ye Tian simply leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes. This month's Hung Hing meeting was incredibly boring; it was just a routine meeting with nothing new to report.
Jiang Tiansheng gave Fat Lai a deep look and slowly said, "If you want to fight, I give you permission. The rules of Hung Hing are in place: fights between branches must not result in death."
Upon hearing the words "war," Ye Tian's eyes immediately opened, sparkling as he asked, "Mr. Jiang, when does this war begin?"
Fat Li hissed, "Today! Starting today!"
Ye Tian smiled, revealing his white teeth: "Alright, today it is. I'll be waiting."
Jiang Tiansheng was a little amused and exasperated. He said to Ye Tian, "Tian, you're a top-level member of the gang. Be careful what you do."
Fat Lai felt a surge of heat rush to his head, his ears ringing, and humiliation and rage burning so intensely that his vision blurred. What did this mean? Me, the dignified leader of the North Point gang, was less than a Mong Kok gang leader in your eyes, and didn't even need to be told to "go easy on me"?
Ye Tian chuckled: "Don't worry, Mr. Jiang. I'm Caoxie, in charge of external liaison. I know the rules best and I know how to behave properly."
Jiang Tiansheng shook his head and said no more.
The other hall masters laughed and teased Ye Tian, telling him to "go easy on him" and not make Fatty Li look too bad.
The Crown Prince was the most direct, pointing to Lin Fu behind Ye Tian and saying, "Tian, don't let Lin Fu go. If that guy gets desperate, even I might not be able to handle him."
Upon hearing this, everyone looked at Lin Fu, who had been standing silently behind Ye Tian, with some surprise.
Han Bin asked curiously, "Your Highness, you are our Hung Hing's God of War, even you say that?"
The crown prince nodded honestly: "In casual sparring, we're about the same. But if it's a life-or-death situation, I'm no match for him. He came down from the real battlefield; there are some techniques that you can't use in sparring, but when it comes to fighting to the death... they can kill."
The hall masters were immediately in an uproar, and their gazes toward Lin Fu became more scrutinizing and wary.
Jiang Tiansheng was also somewhat surprised and asked Liang Kun, "Ah Kun, is Lin Fu one of your men?"
Liang Kun's face lit up, and he nodded: "Yes, Mr. Jiang. He's working for Ah Tian now."
Jiang Tiansheng immediately said, "Ye Tian is his boss, so he has the right to listen here. It's not proper for such a skilled fighter to stand outside. Please invite him in and sit down."
Immediately, a disciple went out to deliver the message. Lin Fu entered, first bowing respectfully to the statue of Guan Yu and Jiang Tiansheng, then silently standing behind Ye Tian's chair, still without saying a word.
Jiang Tiansheng glanced at Lin Fu a few times, and seeing his calm face and upright eyes, he felt a bit more favorably disposed towards him. He looked so reliable.
Watching this scene, Fatty Li felt the rage in his chest burning ever brighter, so intense it hurt his very insides. Favoritism! This dragon head is favoritism to the core!
The monthly meetings of Hung Hing were actually quite simple. They mainly consisted of two things: first, each branch would hand over a portion of its profits to the triad according to regulations; and second, they provided an opportunity for the twelve branch leaders and the gang leader to meet, exchange ideas, and maintain relationships.
Hung Hing operates on a system of "sitting leader" plus twelve district chairpersons, granting the leaders considerable autonomy. Many decisions, such as choosing businesses within their branches and promoting key members, can be made by the leaders themselves; they simply need to report to the relevant triad departments for record-keeping. For example, the signing of Yip Tin-sing's straw sandals was accomplished by Young Kun, in his capacity as the Mong Kok branch leader, inviting Uncle Six from the auditorium to witness the ceremony, and that was it.
Incidentally, Uncle Six, the head of the auditorium, doesn't have much actual territory or underlings. His income, besides the gang's fixed "support," mainly comes from accepting red envelopes for hosting promotion ceremonies, or collecting fines like today.
After beating up Fatty Li, the gang leaders felt refreshed and took turns sealing up the bills due for the month and sending them to Chen Yao.
Chen Yao checked and recorded everything, then said to Jiang Tiansheng, "Mr. Jiang, except for North Point, the amount handed over by all the other branches this month is on average 30% more than last month."
Jiang Tiansheng smiled and nodded. The gang ultimately needs to make money; otherwise, what will the brothers eat? A 30% increase in income without adding territory or manpower is a truly good thing.
Everyone's gazes, intentionally or unintentionally, drifted toward Fatty Li, who was slumped in a chair.
Fatty Li couldn't stand the stares and struggled, hissing, "What are you looking at! You guys just took the game console from Handsome Kun and made a quick buck, right? I want one too, but they won't give it to me! Do you expect me to rob them?"
He couldn't stay any longer, so he told Jiang Tiansheng that he wasn't feeling well, and with the help of two of his men, he limped away from Juyitang.
The smile on Jiang Tiansheng's face faded.
Thirteen Sister's eyes darted around, and she chuckled, "Mr. Jiang, don't take it to heart. Fatty Li is a cultured man; he thinks differently from us roughnecks. He's a bit high-minded."
A low, ambiguous chuckle escaped from the crowd.
Ye Tian thought to himself, "Thirteenth Sister really handed me the knife smoothly with those words." But he liked it.
"Sister, you're giving him too much credit," Ye Tian chimed in. "What kind of cultured person runs a smut magazine? My boss, Brother Kun, is only thinking of the gang's best interests. He opened up the arcade machines because he wanted to create a way for his fellow members to make money. Honestly, if a branch sets up twenty or thirty machines, they can easily rake in millions a month—clean money, no less. This is already out of consideration for our camaraderie. Who in any other gang would bother with this?"
Bucky nodded repeatedly in agreement, "Ah Tian is right." His gang was located on Hong Kong Island, a place teeming with wealthy people with a complex network of relationships, making many shady businesses difficult to run. The relatively clean and highly profitable arcade business was a godsend for him.
Ye Tian smiled at Bucky and continued, "We're all brothers in the Hongmen, and Mr. Chiang has instructed us to take care of our own people. We in Mong Kok have done enough. Arcade machines are in high demand right now, and we operate on a cash-on-delivery basis. Even if Mr. Chiang wanted one, that's the rule. Is there anything wrong with what we're doing?"
The gang leaders all nodded in agreement. The fact that Liang Kun and Ye Tian were willing to share this business was already a huge favor. Each gang had its own unique business, and no one was obligated to share. Mong Kok's willingness to share showed their loyalty.
"We originally reserved a share for North Point as well." Ye Tian's tone shifted, becoming slightly sarcastic. "But that Fatty Li is thinking of getting something for nothing. He said he'd wait until the machines are set up and make money before slowly paying us back... You guys, tell me, does that even make sense?"
