Chapter 34 Impatience
Ye Tian laughed heartily, his laughter sounding somewhat abrupt in the sea breeze. "So, Officer Yuan is here today to recruit me as an informant?"
Yuan Haoyun's smile faded slightly, and his tone became serious: "We can't afford it. Mr. Ye is a well-known low-key and wealthy man with a substantial legitimate business. Our police station can't approve such a high informant fee."
Ye Tian's smile faded, his eyes sharpening as if all his previous laziness had vanished. "Let's cut to the chase. Everyone's time is precious, so let's get straight to the point."
Yuan Haoyun took a breath, his expression becoming much more serious. "I want to ask about something. About the undercover agents in the police force... Liu Jianming's gang."
Ye Tian's gaze suddenly turned strange as he looked Yuan Haoyun up and down again. "Huang Bingyao gave you this job?" He nodded as if answering his own question, "That's right. Giving it to the Ministry of the Interior would make him look bad if things got out of hand. Besides, the Ministry of the Interior and the Political Department... ha, let them investigate, who knows what they'll find out."
Yuan Haoyun's smile faltered slightly as he tentatively asked, "Mr. Ye seems quite familiar with our internal affairs?"
Ye Tian's lips curled into a cold smile. "Easy. I've been among the top three donors to the West Kowloon Headquarters for the past three years. If I couldn't even figure out this much, wouldn't my donations have been a waste?"
Yuan Haoyun was momentarily speechless, his expression shifting repeatedly, as if he had swallowed a fly and couldn't spit it out. It was truly unbelievable; this man was clearly a big brother of Hung Hing, with questionable hands, yet he was also one of the police force's "cash cows." This awkward feeling made him extremely uncomfortable.
Ye Tian watched with interest as his expression changed, his tone slightly teasing: "But I didn't expect that Inspector Wong would entrust this matter to you."
Yuan Haoyun raised an eyebrow, his words carrying a hint of barb: "Mr. Ye, do you think I'm not qualified?"
"That's not it." Ye Tian shook his head, his tone flat and straightforward. "You're good at solving cases, you're daring, and you have a good reputation. But you're the kind of person who does things based on sheer drive, you're too impatient, and you can't be patient and meticulous."
Yuan Haoyun's face darkened, and his voice turned cold: "What do you mean?"
"Literal meaning." Ye Tian maintained his calm tone. "Every time you go on a mission, the scene is always quite dramatic—gunfights, car chases, bloodshed. Not many of those who fall into your hands actually come back alive, right?"
Yuan Haoyun's eyes sharpened, and he forced out the words through clenched teeth: "They deserve to die. Anyone who pulls a gun on the police never ends well. You should know what kind of people we at the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau deal with."
Ye Tian suddenly took a step forward. The distance between them instantly shrank to less than half a meter, close enough to see their own reflection in each other's pupils. Even though the surroundings were empty and deserted, his voice was still low, carrying a cold quality: "That's right, whoever points a gun at me, I'll make them regret being born. But you're a policeman."
He stared into Yuan Haoyun's eyes and asked, word by word, "Have you ever considered what if... one of your own people is sitting opposite you?"
Yuan Haoyun was stunned, his anger froze, then his pupils shrank sharply, and he exclaimed, "What did you say?"
Ye Tian's eyes remained calm as he repeated, "I'm saying, what if you're pointing your gun at a policeman? Don't you understand? An undercover agent. Isn't that your specialty?"
"I would never shoot my own people!" Yuan Haoyun immediately retorted, his tone resolute.
Ye Tian chuckled softly, a laugh tinged with an ambiguous meaning, a mix of pity and mockery. "You, a senior inspector, should know the high level of secrecy surrounding the police undercover operation. How can you be so sure that the guy you killed was a gangster, and not just a colleague disguised as one?"
"Impossible!" Yuan Haoyun's face flushed red, he practically roared, "Absolutely impossible!"
Ye Tian sighed, the sarcasm gone, replaced by an almost helpless indifference. "Impossible? Last month, the gunfight at Fuyuan Teahouse was pretty big, wasn't it? Your colleague, Ah Long, died in that operation."
The color drained from Yuan Haoyun's face instantly. A look of pain flashed across his eyes like lightning, and his fists clenched so tightly that his nails almost dug into his flesh.
Ye Tian just looked at him calmly. "It's good that you still feel sad for your brother." He paused, then continued, "When you get back, you might as well ask your girlfriend... ask her what Superintendent Chen Xinjian secretly burned in his office that day."
Yuan Haoyun instinctively retorted, "I don't have any 'that person'!"
Ye Tian looked at him with a half-smile, his eyes seeming to know everything but he was too lazy to say it. "Alright, next time I see Inspector Cheng Silin, I'll definitely relay those words verbatim."
Yuan Haoyun's brows furrowed, his face extremely grim. "...Your information network is quite impressive. But Mr. Ye, what exactly are you trying to say?"
Ye Tian sighed again, as if talking to this person was particularly difficult. "I want to say, with your personality, you're really not suited to investigating this kind of case. Kang Daoxing from the Information Division, and Zhang Guozhan from the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau, they're both much more reliable and suitable than you. Of course, there must be a reason why Inspector Wong chose you."
Yuan Haoyun's heart sank. The feeling that something was wrong became clearer and clearer, and his expression changed completely: "You mean... I did something wrong before?"
"It's not that you did anything wrong," Ye Tian shook his head, "it's your system that's sometimes so stupid it's beyond words. You're a captain in the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau, a senior inspector, and you didn't even know you had an undercover colleague on the other side when you were in a shootout. Does that sound good if word gets out? Your undercover rules are rigid and inhumane."
In a moment of impulsiveness, Yuan Haoyun took a step forward and reached out to grab Ye Tian's collar, his eyes blazing with barely suppressed anger.
Ye Tian seemed to have anticipated this move, and raised his hand to push him away. The movement was not fast, even somewhat casual, but the force was very solid, carrying a short and fierce power.
Yuan Haoyun felt a powerful force slam into his chest, and he was sent flying backward uncontrollably, crashing onto the beach with a thud, kicking up a cloud of sand. Ye Tian's Bajiquan had long been honed to the point of complete control; a casual strike from him was something that someone like Yuan Haoyun, who made his living with a gun, couldn't withstand.
"Look," Ye Tian's voice came from above, still as calm as ever, "What did I just say? You're too impatient. Investigating undercover agents is a slow and meticulous process; you have to calm down and dig deep, bit by bit. If you don't change your fiery temper, you'll cause trouble again next time."
Yuan Haoyun struggled to his feet from the sand, his face and hair covered in sand, his eyes bloodshot, like a wild beast thoroughly enraged. He roared, "Tell me! What exactly happened at the teahouse!"
Ye Tian looked at him: "Bajiquan emphasizes close-quarters combat. If you really want to beat someone up, you have to get close to their arm and entangle them. I only pushed you just now, which was already being very lenient with you. Want to try again?"
Without saying a word, Yuan Haoyun rushed forward again, his eyes red.
---
West Kowloon Headquarters, Major Crime Unit lobby.
When Yuan Haoyun rushed in, he looked quite disheveled. His left cheekbone was bruised, his lip was cut and bleeding, his uniform was covered in patches of sand, and his hair was a mess. Several colleagues who were chatting were stunned when they saw him and gathered around.
"Inspector Yuan? You... got into a fight?"
Yuan Haoyun's face was as gloomy as the sky before a storm. He growled at the crowd, "What are you looking at? Nothing better to do? Get back to work!"
His colleagues trembled at his shout, exchanged bewildered glances, and quickly scattered like birds, returning to their seats, keeping their eyes down and not daring to look in his direction again.
Cheng Silin was startled to see him like this and quickly walked over, her voice filled with concern: "Haoyun? What happened to you? Who did you clash with?"
Yuan Haoyun grabbed her wrist and pulled her to a corner without saying a word. He stared intently at her, his voice low and urgent: "Last month, after the gunfight, what did Inspector Chen do alone in his office? I want to hear the truth, the kind that only you saw."
Cheng Silin frowned, her eyes filled with confusion and bewilderment: "What nonsense are you talking about? Everything was in chaos after that day, everyone was busy cleaning up the mess, what could Inspector Chen possibly do?"
Yuan Haoyun was about to explode with anger when Ye Tian's words, "Too hasty," flashed through his mind. He swallowed his anger, took a deep breath, and tried to calm his voice: "I'm not lying. Just tell me, did he... burn a file?"
