Re:Zero -Starting Life in Zero
Chapter 17 The Game Begins
"Hehehe, Master, you are truly the most handsome man in the world."
"Shut up, I know."
"Yes, Master."
The magic mirror faded the illusory face, restoring its original surface.
"Phew~"
Green blew a breath, making his bangs bounce up, and talked to himself narcissistically in the mirror.
"With your eyes swollen like that, you can still look this handsome? Tsk tsk tsk, you're simply outrageous."
"Excuse me, could you move aside? This windowsill hasn't been cleaned yet."
Rem interrupted Grimm's self-admiration and gestured for him to make room on the windowsill.
"Don't be so heartless, Rem. Look, the moonlight is so beautiful tonight."
Grimm was shooed aside by Rem, and he looked completely innocent.
This blue-haired brat is only slightly better to get along with than her older sister.
"Rem has a ton of work to do, she doesn't have time to play around with Grin."
After saying that, Rem began cleaning the windowsill, meticulously wiping every corner that might harbor dirt and grime.
"How much work is left? Let me help you."
As Rem cleaned, Green glided smoothly to the large vase beside her, casually picking a sprig of alpine white lily of the valley and putting it in his mouth, giving off the vibe of a domineering CEO.
"Mr. Green, lily of the valley is poisonous. Although it won't be fatal, holding it in your mouth can cause your tongue to become numb."
"What? Ptooey! Ptooey! I was wondering why the taste was weird."
Green quickly spat out the flower; his mouth was already slightly poisoned, and he began to salivate continuously.
Whoosh!
While the clumsy fellow was scratching his tongue, his elbow accidentally pushed the vase off the shelf.
The white porcelain vase fell to the ground with a crash, shattering into several pieces. The lilies of the valley inside were scattered all over the ground, and the dewdrops on the petals wet the dark red velvet carpet.
Green froze on the spot, as if the air around him had solidified.
Rem looked at Grimm calmly, and after a while said, "Are you alright, Grimm-kun?"
Grimm hurriedly snatched the broom and shovel from Rem's hands and said sincerely, "I'm so sorry, Rem, I'll clean it up right away."
Rem didn't stop her, but turned and left. A little while later, she returned with a bottle of fresh lily of the valley.
After skillfully changing the vase, Rem also joined in cleaning up the small porcelain shards.
"Grin-kun, these are the maid's duties. Your responsibility is to protect the mansion and Lady Emilia's safety."
"Okay, Rem-senpai, I'll take care of your and Ram's safety as well."
Green said confidently, speeding up the process of cleaning up the broken pieces. After all, it was he who had carelessly broken it, and it wouldn't be good if Rem's hand got cut.
Upon hearing Grimm's words, Rem visibly paused, and after a few seconds of hesitation, she spoke.
"As for Rem... it's okay."
This guy looks a bit down; it seems he's been thinking about some bad memories.
"Don't say such lonely things, Rem. Many people in the mansion care about you, especially Ram."
Through Green's tireless efforts, the ground was finally cleaned up.
The wet carpet was rolled up and replaced with a dry one, and then the job was done.
Rem's mood improved noticeably when Ram was mentioned.
The two sisters have a very close relationship and consider each other to be the most important person in their lives.
However, twins are taboo among the demons, because each twin only has one demon horn.
The tribe believed that Rem had taken away Ram's demon horn, thus hindering her sister's talent.
Rem grew up in her sister's shadow, both respecting and loving Ram, yet harboring feelings of inferiority and resentment.
When Ram lost her demon horns, she even had the evil thought that "it's finally broken," and this guilt plunged her into deeper self-loathing.
"Grimm, Rem will definitely repay the kindness of saving my sister's life."
Rem walked up to Grimm, bowed deeply, her expression sincere and resolute.
"You're here again. Why do you make yourself so tired?"
Grimm was at his wit's end; the shackles in Rem's heart firmly bound her free soul.
"Yawn~ So sleepy~ Oh right, Rem, what's my room again?"
"I'll take you there, Grin-kun. Your room is right next to Subaru's; it'll be easier to tidy up if we use the same room."
"Oh? So you're Subaru's neighbor..." Green smirked. "Won't some strange visitors come knocking at the door in the middle of the night?"
Rem tilted her head, revealing her rare full blue eyes, which were almost unfairly cute.
Rem doesn't understand what Grin-kun is saying.
"Don't try to fool me with cuteness, okay?"
Green was genuinely afraid that this blue-haired little brat would get up in the middle of the night and be killed by Subaru Natsuki, at which point the situation could easily spiral out of his control.
……
"Ah~ That feels so good~"
Finally arriving at his room, Green plunged into the soft bed.
Roswaal's mansion was very large, and the male retainers' quarters were located at the very edge of the west wing, so even if they were to carry out some kind of explosion, it might not disturb the women's quarters in the main house.
He had done too much today, leaving him feeling quite exhausted, both physically and mentally.
"I wonder if Subaru Natsuki is asleep yet. Let me put another layer of insurance on you."
In the next room, Natsuki Subaru was lying on the bed in a starfish position.
The feeling of having his "magic gate" hollowed out made him nauseous and unable to sleep peacefully.
"Damn it, I didn't expect the price of acquiring skills to be so high. But at least I've come into contact with power beyond that of ordinary people. My journey in this other world, Natsuki Subaru, is finally on the right track!"
Natsuki Subaru sat up and clenched his fist tightly.
He knew that he, who had been summoned to another world, must be the protagonist of that world.
"That's strange. When did a full-length mirror appear in my room? Did Rem move it in without me noticing?"
Natsuki Subaru stood up in confusion and looked around at the tall mirror standing next to the bed.
The mirror was about 1.7 meters long, a bit taller than him, and its frame was ornate and engraved with mysterious runes.
hum~
The mirror trembled, emitting eerie sounds, and lines of bloody characters appeared on its surface.
"Oh my god, it's haunted!"
Natsuki Subaru was startled, his knees buckled, and he collapsed to the ground.
"Ghost, please spare my life! I... I've never even had a girlfriend! Please!"
Natsuki Subaru immediately prostrated himself, kneeling in front of the mirror and kowtowing repeatedly, his shoulders trembling slightly, and his forehead already covered with tiny beads of sweat.
The mirror surface was faintly visible with streaks of black lines, as if the person was somewhat speechless.
Seeing that there was no reaction after a while, Natsuki Subaru tentatively raised his head to peek.
The mirror surface was shrouded in blood, and something was written in a script from another world.
To make it easier for Subaru to see, the mirror automatically increased the brightness of the text.
"Ghost Teacher, I haven't learned these words yet, what does this mean?"
Subaru asked cautiously, guessing that the ghost was trying to convey some kind of message to him, but unfortunately, he was too advanced to understand it at his current level.
"Damn! Another illiterate person."
A faint curse came from the mirror.
Then, all the text was transformed into sinister voices, which entered Subaru Natsuki's mind like the whispers of demons.
Welcome to the Ghost Comes: Rules and Tales
"Natsuki Subaru, you are a commoner, and have already been identified as a target by the demons. One wrong step, and you will be killed!"
