Highway Survival for All: My RV's Infinite Evolution
Chapter 193 Upper-Class Residents
"Aaaaaaahh ...
A heart-wrenching scream emanated from the flames.
The sound didn't sound like a human; it was more like the wail of some wild beast on its deathbed, or the crackling sound of wet wood exploding in a raging fire.
Flames danced wildly in the wind, and billowing black smoke rose into the air.
Lin Hui watched all of this with indifference.
His gaze did not linger on the flames, but rather fell upon the various expressions of the "residents" around him.
He discovered that the fear in these people's eyes was not fear of "killing," but fear of "demon." In their view, burning these two people was as justifiable as burning two plague-carrying rats.
"The rules of this town are based on absolute fear of demons."
It burned for a full ten minutes.
The two players finally stopped struggling, turning into two charred and curled-up remains, still vaguely recognizable as human figures, but more like two pieces of burnt, withered wood.
The flames gradually died down.
The square was deathly silent.
The Lyon police chief clapped his hands and ordered, "Bury them in the cemetery behind the church."
Then he turned around, his gaze passing over the crowd, and looked at Lin Hui again.
He took a step, his leather boots making a dull thud on the stone pavement.
As he walked, the surrounding crowd automatically parted to make way for him.
Sheriff Lyon stopped two meters away from Lin Hui, looked him up and down, and lingered on the axe-gun at his waist for a moment.
"Welcome to the Misty Town."
Leon's voice was hoarse. "I'm Leon, the sheriff of this town. I hope what just happened serves as a reminder to everyone—here, you can only survive by following the rules."
Lin Hui remained calm and said indifferently, "We are rule-abiding people. As long as the rules are reasonable."
"Reasonable?"
Lyon seemed to have heard a joke, and the corner of his mouth twitched slightly. "Here, staying alive is the greatest justification."
He paused, his gaze sweeping over the four women behind Lin Hui, as well as Chen Ye, Song Shan, and the others beside him, before finally settling back on Lin Hui's face:
"Karl should have told you that all new residents need to register at the town hall. There you'll find the credentials that allow you to 'legally' reside in this town."
"Of course, we'd be happy to cooperate." Lin Hui nodded, neither humble nor arrogant.
"very good."
Sheriff Lyon nodded in satisfaction, then looked at Chen Yi, "Take them to register!"
"Yes!" Chen Yi nodded.
Inspector Lyon nodded slightly, then looked at Raymond and the other two. "As for them... they inhaled the fog. Lock them in the police station's detention room. Whether they survive tonight depends on your luck."
"yes!"
Several police officers immediately stepped forward and took Raymond and his companions away.
The Lyon police chief left with his large entourage, and the crowd in the square gradually dispersed, but the oppressive atmosphere lingered for a long time.
Chen Yi said softly:
"Brother Lin, Brother Ye, let me take you to the city hall to register."
"Hmm!" Lin Hui nodded.
After walking through several streets paved with bluestone slabs, Lin Hui and his group arrived at the town hall located in the center of the town.
This is a typical Gothic building, and the interior of the hall is extremely empty and desolate.
Several rows of benches were scattered around, where a few townspeople sat with blank expressions, their heads bowed, like statues that had lost their souls.
Behind the curved counter at the front of the lobby, there was a female receptionist.
She was a tall foreign woman with striking long orange-red hair, which was tied up at the back of her head, revealing her slender neck.
Hearing footsteps, the receptionist lazily raised her head.
When her gaze fell upon Lin Hui and the others, her previously somewhat dim amber eyes instantly lit up.
"Ladies and gentlemen, are you new... players?"
She didn't use the term "residents," but instead used "players."
Lin Hui raised an eyebrow and lingered on the woman for two seconds.
The foreign woman brushed a stray hair behind her ear and smiled, "My name is Elenelu, and I'm also a player who just arrived in Misty Town yesterday."
As she spoke, she pointed to the people sitting blankly in the corner of the hall and said helplessly:
"The original inhabitants here... as you've seen, had empty eyes and numb expressions, just like NPCs in a game."
Elenelu seemed to be bursting with pent-up emotions, and once she started talking, she couldn't stop: "If I stay here too long, I'm afraid I'll go crazy. Or become like them, an NPC... So, it's really nice to meet you all."
"Hmm." Lin Hui nodded and said calmly, "Can we register now?"
"certainly!"
Elinie quickly took seven yellowed parchment forms from the drawer and handed them over. "The procedure is very simple. You only need to fill in basic information."
Lin Hui took the form and glanced at it.
It's really simple.
You only need to fill in three items: [Name], [Age], and [Whether you have awakened your specialization].
As for what specialization they awakened, their level, and where they came from, they didn't ask any of that.
This registration method doesn't seem to be for population management; it's more like some kind of...screening?
Lin Hui thought for a moment and filled in "Yes" in the "Whether to awaken specialization" column.
The four women, along with Chen Ye and Song Shan, quickly filled out the forms.
After filling out the form, Elinelle took it and glanced at it. When she saw that Lin Hui had checked "yes," a flash of envy crossed her eyes.
"Alright, the procedures are complete."
She stamped the form with a red seal, then said somewhat mysteriously, "Congratulations, in this town, players who have awakened their specialization are considered 'upper-class residents'."
"Can we sit here for a while?" Lin Hui pointed to the rest area next to the lobby.
"Of course, sit wherever you like." Elena rested her chin on her hand, smiling at him. "Just don't tear this place down."
Lin Hui led everyone to sit down on the benches in the rest area.
The light here is even dimmer, with only a few rays of light filtering in through a skylight high up.
"Chen Yi".
Lin Hui looked at Chen Yi sitting opposite him and asked bluntly, "Do you know what exactly happened with the residents of those towns?"
