The system guided Su Han in her mind, and Su Han pretended to casually overtake Shen Chengyin and Sun Liang, who had become crippled, and went to the front of the group.

He was the first to find the entrance to the research institute. The heavy alloy door's light flickered twice, then finally came on.

"There's still electricity here?" Su Han exclaimed in surprise.

Sun Liang walked over, groaning, "The hill behind here is covered with solar panels; there should be an independent power generation system."

Shen Chengyin patted Sun Liang on the shoulder, and his supernatural power suddenly appeared. Sun Liang straightened his back immediately, his waist and shoulders no longer ached, and he felt inexhaustible energy.

"Thanks." Sun Liang owed Shen Chengyin another favor.

Shen Chengyin strode into the alloy door, and as he moved, the ceiling lights gradually came on.

"How did you know the way here?" Su Han asked.

"When I came in, there was a layout map of the building on the wall." Shen Chengyin said this half-truthfully.

Su Han didn't intend to delve into the matter. After the three entered, the heavy alloy door slowly closed again.

This door should be lockable; take a look.

Following the system's prompt, Su Han locked the alloy door behind her. The door was so thick that even a mid-level zombie couldn't break through; they were safe for now.

Sun Liang finally breathed a sigh of relief.

"Staying here isn't a solution. Let's hold on for a few days and hope that our base will notice something's wrong and send someone over."

"There should be another way out here. Let's look for it." Su Han pointed to the depths of the corridor.

This was a system notification. As soon as he finished speaking, both Shen Chengyin and Sun Liang turned their gazes to Su Han.

"You've been here before?" Sun Liang was increasingly unable to figure this kid out.

"No, just guessing. A place this big should have at least two exits according to fire safety standards." Su Han held up two fingers.

Sun Liang choked for a moment, and Shen Chengyin also looked away.

To improve efficiency, the three split up to search for an exit.

The entire underground laboratory was very large, divided into countless small rooms.

Su Han searched the area, finding it littered with scattered papers and dried blood. It wasn't hard to guess how horrific the scene must have been during the apocalypse.

As he passed one of the laboratories, Su Han caught a glimpse of the enormous glass jars inside. He stepped inside, and as the lights came on, four two-meter-tall glass jars came into view.

Two of the glass jars contained two bodies floating inside, while the other two were broken and empty.

The corpse had been soaked and rotted, presenting a gruesome, gigantic appearance, with white fat bubbling in the water.

The other corpse was barely recognizable as human, with medium-length hair and a naked body; it was a boy.

The sign in front of the glass jar was covered with a string of data, with the experimental subject numbers written in bold black letters.

"They are conducting human experiments here, attempting to cultivate people into emotionless, highly capable humanoid killing machines for large-scale deployment on the battlefield." The system's voice sounded at the opportune moment.

If these test subjects were to become undercover agents and infiltrate enemy territory... the consequences would be unimaginable.

"How do you know all this?" Su Han asked, puzzled.

"Uh, it's written in the book. You didn't read it carefully, did you?" the system rambled on.

Su Han only read the original text once when she first regained consciousness, and she couldn't remember some of the details.

The two broken glass jars next to it were empty, presumably because the test subjects were also infected by the virus when the apocalypse came.

Those who survived broke free and escaped as mid-level zombies. Those who couldn't withstand the high fever became like the two corpses here.

"Hey, there's a cabinet on your left. See what's in there." the system said.

Su Han opened the cabinet and took out a document from inside.

These appear to be the files of the persons in charge of these four experiments; the names seem somewhat familiar.

"Does this person also have a role in the original story?" Su Han asked the system.

[...He made a cameo appearance later in the series. He has two students, and their roles are quite substantial.]

Su Han turned the page of the file, her pupils contracting.

Pan Taining.

A character who only appears later in the original story, a top-tier research doctor who becomes famous in the post-apocalyptic world. Because of his gray beard and hair, everyone calls him by his nickname, KFC.

In the original story, Pan Taining approaches the male protagonist as an elder, allowing him to experience a fatherly love he has never felt before. His true purpose is to destroy Shen Chengyin's brain, turning Shen Chengyin into a powerful tool solely for his own use.

Since we cannot become gods, we will manipulate them.

Pan Taining was the direct cause of Shen Chengyin's destruction of the world.

"What about the other student?" the system urged impatiently.

Su Han turned the page to the next page; it was a blank sheet of paper.

He flipped over again, but there was nothing there.

"The file states that the person in charge was only one student, Pan Taining."

[...I might be mistaken; the villains who appear later might not be his students. Sigh, I need to go review the original text again.]

The system listlessly dropped a sentence and then fell silent.

The abandoned laboratory was cold and empty. The nutrient solution smelled awful, nauseating, and made me want to vomit.

Su Han casually tossed the file into the cabinet and turned to leave.

They searched inside for three hours and only found half of it.

Su Han was so thirsty that she ran to a relatively open space and sat down to rest.

A short while later, someone sat down next to him.

Shen Chengyin placed a bottle of water on the ground, gently pushed it with his index finger, and the bottom of the bottle slid smoothly to Su Han.

Su Han didn't stand on ceremony with him and took a big gulp after unscrewing the bottle.

The cool water soothed the boy's unusually restless heart.

"Are you feeling unwell?" Shen Chengyin asked.

"..." Su Han remained silent, glancing up at Shen Chengyin's direction.

That glance was cautious, as if he felt a little guilty.

Sun Liang was still searching for the exit; it was just the two of them present. Shen Chengyin noticed Su Han's subtle movements, and his eyes darkened slightly.

He didn't urge him, and Su Han didn't keep him waiting too long.

He heard the boy speak slowly:

"Shen Chengyin, I lied."

The man looked at Su Han in silence.

"I lied to you," Su Han said, emphasizing each word.

"I actually knew how dangerous it was here, but I deliberately kept it from you. I was afraid you would come with me, I was afraid you would get hurt, and I was even more afraid you would die."
