The car traveled over 100 kilometers before stopping on a nearby road.

The surrounding area was a cluster of ruined bungalows, which was probably a town undergoing large-scale demolition before the apocalypse.

There wasn't a single building in sight, so it was safe to take a short rest here.

"Didn't they say there were zombies here? What? Forget zombies, I haven't even seen a bird!"

The woman in the car with Shen Chengyin and Su Han was a gold-type ability user in her early 30s with a wheatish complexion, named Jin Ting.

At this moment, she placed a can of luncheon meat on her lap and pried it open forcefully.

The aroma of meat filled the air.

"Isn't it great that there are no zombies? You won't be happy if the zombies really come."

The two men in the car ahead jumped out. The five of them joined together, but they couldn't see any trust or goodwill in each other's eyes.

Su Han and Shen Chengyin exchanged a glance and both tacitly chose to remain silent.

One of the men wandered around, looking at the large "demolition" sign on a section of broken wall, and sighed, "What a pity, so close. If it weren't for the apocalypse, we could have gotten a compensation payment for the demolition."

"Come on, it's still early." Another man raised his chin and pointed to a patch of shadow hidden in the woods not far away.

"There are houses over there, they haven't been demolished yet, I've seen them all."

It will take at least several more years to completely demolish this area.

Following the direction the man pointed, everyone could indeed see the shadow of a two-story building among the trees in the distance.

The windows were all shattered, revealing a pitch-black interior. The darkness inside, combined with the dilapidated, yellowed walls and the desolate surroundings, gave it a truly haunted feel.

Jin Ting felt a chill run down her spine. "Hey, watch your mouth. Stop spouting nonsense all the time."

The man didn't seem to care. "What could possibly happen? Women are just timid. Alright, you guys wait here, I'll go check it out."

The three of them built a campfire on the spot using simple flammable materials, and then used it to boil water and make instant noodles.

The place was deserted, so the group didn't take any precautions to hide. The smoke from the campfire and the aroma of instant noodles spread freely.

Less than ten minutes later, the man who had said he was going to check out the second floor returned.

He waved his hand: "It was a wasted trip. There was nothing inside, and I even got a face full of dust."

Jin Ting sneered, "If there's something inside, then that would be truly a ghost story."

The man snorted in protest. He had come back late, and no one had even heated up his food for him.

He didn't have time to say much. He sheepishly carried his tin box to the dying campfire to warm his lunch with the remaining warmth.

Half an hour later, the group finished eating and drinking and prepared to get into the car.

Seeing this, the slowest man immediately picked up the bowl and shoveled the contents into his mouth, a frightening sight.

"Who goes there?!"

Jin Ting's expression changed, and she grabbed the metal sheet used to open cans from the side and threw it away.

The piece of iron seemed to have a soul in her hand, spinning several times in the air before piercing through the gap between two pieces of ruins with remarkable accuracy, accompanied by a whooshing sound, and embedding itself in a person's shoulder.

puff.

"Aaaaaaahh ...

A heart-wrenching scream rang out, followed by the sound of a heavy object falling to the ground.

Several people gathered around. Su Han stepped over the broken wall and saw the shadowy figure lying on the ground—blood was gushing from the cut on the shoulder by the metal plate; it was a child who was about ten years old.

The boy was thin, his face and body were dirty, and his clothes were torn into strips.

You can tell he's had a very hard time these past few years since the apocalypse.

After a quick check of the boy's body, which showed no infected wounds or weapons, Jin Ting turned her pleading gaze to Shen Chengyin.

Shen Chengyin didn't move until Su Han gently tugged at his sleeve. Only then did he take a step forward and pull out the sheet metal deeply embedded in the wound with one hand.

The light of the supernatural power flashed by, and the horrifying wound slowly healed at a speed visible to the naked eye.

In the blink of an eye, all that remained on the boy's shoulder were holes in his clothes and bloodstains.

"Kid, what are you doing here? Aren't you afraid of being eaten by zombies?"

Jin Ting squatted down and asked the boy.

The boy was terrified after being beaten by her. He stared at Jin Ting with fear in his eyes, kneeling on the ground and shrinking back.

"Speak up, or I'll throw you to feed the zombies," the man behind Jin Ting threatened viciously.

"No! Don't feed me to zombies?!"

The boy, trembling, pleaded, "I'll tell you everything, please don't kill me! I... I came out to find food!"

"Food? Looking for food in a place like this? Kid... you don't think we're so easy to fool, do you?" Jin Ting scoffed.

"My mom said that the grass roots in the ground are edible."

The boy was both scared and embarrassed. He stared at the canned food that the group had left behind not far away, swallowing hard.

It tastes like meat.

He had no idea how long it had been since he had seen meat.

Their family of more than ten people has lived here for almost two years.

Before the apocalypse, they were the most despised holdouts. Even though the surrounding houses were demolished, this family still lived there despite the danger.

Who would have thought that after the apocalypse, this very fact would save their lives?

The surrounding area had been demolished, a complete wasteland where no one ever came. He hadn't even seen a zombie since the apocalypse began. He survived the dangerous period without any real danger.

Unfortunately, the town's farmland had been destroyed, leaving them without a food source. So much time had passed that they were long since exhausted and had to rely on digging for wild vegetables nearby to survive.

His mother recently gave birth to a baby boy, but she can't even produce breast milk. If he doesn't go out to find food, the baby boy will starve to death.

Jin Ting listened quietly to the boy's words, nodding earnestly as she listened.

Su Han was terrified that this woman would act on her saintly instincts and rush in to save the family, so she scoffed, "You don't actually want to save people, do you? Don't forget, we have a mission to complete."

"Of course not, the leader's mission is the priority," Jin Ting immediately retorted, then changed the subject:

"However... isn't our base's tradition to save as many people as possible? Even if these people are all ordinary people without superpowers, they are still an indispensable source of labor for the base."

Suhan:…………

This person is beyond saving.

The other two men in the group also unusually sided with Su Han, saying, "Never mind, let's just go. We only have two cars, we can't take more than a dozen people."

What's the point of taking the elderly, weak, sick, and disabled back with us?

"It's only a six-hour drive from here to the base. We can send one person back to the base to report, while the rest of us wait here until the base sends a vehicle to pick them up before we continue our journey."

Jin Ting calmly explained her arrangements.
