Day .

Since Zhu Yong invented the reverse slope warfare, the threat of Japanese artillery fire has been greatly reduced.

Without artillery support, the Japanese troops launched a forced attack on Gujia Town, but suffered heavy losses.

The Japanese command had completely lost patience after suffering repeated setbacks, heavy casualties, and slow progress.

Matsui Iwane issued a stern order aboard the Izumo, demanding that Gujia Town be taken swiftly by any means necessary!

In order to capture Gujia Town as soon as possible and encircle the main force of the National Revolutionary Army, the Japanese used the most vicious methods.

On the morning of the seventh day, the position suddenly fell silent, which gave Zhu Yong a bad feeling.

Soon, the Japanese launched another artillery barrage, but this time the shells did not explode; instead, they emitted thick, yellowish-green gas.

Zhu Yong witnessed this, his pupils suddenly shrinking to the size of pinpoints, and he roared hoarsely:

"Poison gas bomb!! Poison gas bomb!!"

"Quick! Prepare for the poison!"

Zhu Yong's eyes widened, bloodshot veins filling his eyeballs; the worst had still happened.

The 108th Division was poorly equipped, with a severe shortage of gas masks. How could such a unit possibly withstand the Japanese poison gas bombs?

"Quickly, find water!!"

"Immediately cover your mouth and nose with a wet towel or a soaked cloth. If you can't find water, use urine! Quickly!!"

Zhu Yong's voice was quickly relayed to every squad and platoon through messengers and a network of clones.

Soon, yellowish-green mustard gas drifted towards the 108th Division's position on the breeze.

A chorus of violent coughing and vomiting erupted on the battlefield.

However, many soldiers still collapsed from inhaling the poison gas, suffering from blisters on their skin, blindness, and burns to their lungs, enduring immense pain.

The most terrifying thing about poison gas is that, regardless of whether you inhale it or not, prolonged skin contact can lead to infection.

Half an hour later, the entire battlefield was enveloped in yellowish-green gas.

Even Zhu Yong himself had to use a wet towel to cover his mouth and nose.

Fortunately, the Japanese didn't have many poison gas bombs, and Gujia Town was close to the sea, so the sea breeze blew from time to time, preventing the poison gas from accumulating.

An hour later, the entire battlefield returned to deathly silence. The yellowish-green gas was still present, but it was now extremely thin.

The Japanese soldiers thought that the poison gas had broken down the resistance of the National Army, and the infantry wearing gas masks began their attack.

The battlefield was littered with the corpses of Nationalist soldiers who had died from poison gas, and the Japanese soldiers watched it all with savage grins.

"Stupid Chinese pigs! This is what happens when you oppose the Empire."

"Hahaha, these Chinese are probably all dead by now, right? No one can survive poison gas."

The Japanese soldiers thought they were just coming up to collect the corpses of the Nationalist soldiers, but when they came to the reverse slope again, something unexpected happened.

"Da da da da da!"

"Rat-a-tat-tat!"

The roar of machine guns shattered the silence of the battlefield.

Having survived the first wave of poison gas attacks, the soldiers of the 108th Division, their mouths and noses covered with urine-soaked clothes, suddenly raised their heads from the trenches, grabbed their weapons, and unleashed flames of revenge at the enemy so close at hand.

Machine guns roared amidst coughing, and grenades were thrown amidst panting! The sudden attack caused the Japanese soldiers, who had relaxed their vigilance, to pay a heavy price once again.

Zhu Yong personally directed operations on the front lines. He saw a clone whose movements were slowed down due to the poison gas. The clone was stabbed by the Japanese soldiers, but still managed to pull the pin on a grenade before falling.

His eyes were bloodshot. He grabbed a light machine gun and opened fire wildly on the charging Japanese soldiers: "You damn little devils! Come on!!"

The Japanese soldiers fell in a row, like wheat being harvested.

Then, a fierce tug-of-war began again.

The two sides waged a life-or-death war in the small town of Gujia, and in just seven days, at least 30,000 people fell.

When Matsui Iwane learned that the gas attack had also failed, he smashed his beloved teacup in anger.

He could not accept that the elite troops of the Empire, consisting of more than two divisions and equipped with powerful naval and air forces, could not defeat a small area defended by a ragtag Nationalist army division.

An enraged Matsui Iwane called the front lines directly and berated them mercilessly.

"You idiots, what are you doing?!"

"Eighty thousand men besieged Gu Family Town, defended by ten thousand, and you still couldn't take it after seven days??"

"Are your brains full of pig shit?"

"You're given three more days. If you still can't take Gujia Town, you'll all have to commit seppuku to atone for His Majesty's sins!"

"Hi!!"

In order to open up the road to Gujia Town, Matsui Iwane mobilized a part of the 11th Division, which had just arrived in Shanghai, to join the siege of Gujia Town.

The final battle devolved into the purest and most brutal war of attrition.

The Japanese launched an unprecedentedly dense Banzai charge.

The Japanese soldiers, wrapped in sanitary napkins, launched a mass assault in groups of battalions and regiments, led by their officers.

These men, like wild beasts that had lost their minds, launched wave after wave of desperate attacks on the 108th Division's positions, disregarding casualties.

The 108th Division now has less than 5,000 men left, all of them wounded, and Zhu Yong's clones have less than 1,000 men left.

In every attack, Zhu Yong's clone was always the first to charge, killing the most enemies, which naturally made him the most likely to be targeted by the Japanese.

Often, in order to kill Zhu Yong's clones, these Japanese soldiers would launch an attack on the clones together, which resulted in a large number of casualties among Zhu Yong's clones.

Besides being outnumbered, the 108th Division is now out of ammunition and supplies.

In seven days, Zhang Zhizhong found that not a single batch of supplies had been sent up from the rear.

It wasn't that he didn't try his best; it was just that the Japanese planes were like locusts, blotting out the sky.

The Japanese air force and carrier-based aircraft were all deployed in an effort to cut off the 108th Division's logistics.

Now that the Japanese have launched a desperate charge, Zhu Yong understands that the defense of Gujia Town has reached its final moment.

"Brothers!! Hang in there! Just one more day!!"

"We will never retreat!!"

Zhu Yong personally led his guards to the front line and engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the Japanese.

The two sides engaged in a fierce hand-to-hand battle throughout the entire Gujia Town position. When bayonets broke, they used rifle butts to smash them; when rifle butts were shattered, they used their fists and teeth.

Zhu Yong was blinded by rage. Like a tireless war god, he appeared at the most critical points on the front line.

If the broadsword in his hand got dull, he would switch to one that belonged to a fallen brother; if the bayonet broke, he would pick up a rifle from the ground and continue the bayonet fighting.

His uniform was soaked in blood, so much so that it was impossible to tell whether it belonged to the enemy or himself.

As the setting sun on the seventh day stained the sky above Gujia Town like blood, the deafening shouts and gunfire finally subsided.

The 108th Division suffered heavy casualties, with more than 3,000 dead and wounded, but repelled eight waves of Japanese attacks.

The entire division has fewer than two thousand personnel still capable of fighting, and they are exhausted to the extreme.

On the battlefield, corpses piled up like mountains, and the blood had stained the soil a dark red.

However, Zhu Yong still stands on the ruins of Gujia Town.

The Japanese flag never managed to be planted in the core position of Gujia Town.

Zhu Yong, covered in blood and leaning on a broken bayonet, stood on the main battleground where the smoke of battle had not yet dissipated. He watched the Japanese soldiers receding like a tide below the mountain. His face, stained with blood and smoke, still exuded a strong killing intent.

Seven days! He finally did it.

With only 10,000 remaining troops, Zhu Yong was fighting against 100,000 elite Japanese soldiers, plus repeated bombing raids from the navy and air force. He had already pushed himself to the limit.

Gazing at the battlefield strewn with corpses, Zhu Yong murmured softly:

"The fortifications at the rear must be complete; it's time to retreat."

Just as Zhu Yong was about to order a retreat, Zhang Zhizhong called again.

"108th Division, the situation has changed. Luodian has fallen, and the Japanese are surging south. Gujia Town cannot be lost."

"It will take another three days to build the defenses; we must hold on!!!"
