Unlimited Black Cards! A Mysterious and Wealthy Young Lady!
Chapter 34 Five-Card Stud 2!
She gently pushed all the chips in front of her forward. The pile of chips, like a small mountain, collided with the table, making a dull but pleasant clattering sound.
"I don't like testing the waters." Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried clearly throughout the quiet card room. "I prefer a single game to decide the winner."
She raised her hand, tapped her three face-up cards—10, 10, and A—with her fingertips, and then gently placed them on her face-down card.
"All in."
All in.
The air seemed to freeze. Ma Yun gasped. Qiao Jie's smile finally faltered, and his pupils contracted slightly. He stared intently at Jiang Wenxi, trying to find any trace of bluff on her face. But she was too calm, as calm as a bottomless ancient well.
His hole cards are K, and his face-up cards are Q, Q, and J. His chances of winning are high, but not absolute. For his opponent to go all-in like that, he's either crazy, or… has absolute confidence in winning. What are her hole cards? A? Or a 10? If she has three Aces… no, it can't be that coincidental.
A gambler's mentality and reason clashed fiercely in his mind. He glanced at his assistant behind him, who shook his head almost imperceptibly—meaning that during the dealing and Jiang Wenxi's all-in, they hadn't found any safe and unnoticed opportunity to switch cards. Jiang Wenxi's fingers always seemed to be "unintentionally" protecting the cards, and his gaze never left the card table.
"Young Master Qiao," Jiang Wenxi's voice rang out again, tinged with a hint of urging, "it's your turn. Call, or... fold. The eight million you won is still waiting for me to take it back."
That last sentence, like a needle, gently pierced Qiao Jie's carefully maintained composure. His expression shifted, and finally, a surge of anger at being looked down upon and the ruthlessness of a gambler rose within him. He refused to believe that this newcomer could possess such good fortune and courage!
"Miss Jiang, what a powerful presence!" Qiao Jie forced a smile and pushed out all the remaining chips in front of him. "I'll call! Let's show our cards!"
"Both sides, please reveal your hand." The dealer's voice rang out.
Qiao Jie took a deep breath and turned over his hole card first—the King of Hearts! "I have a pair of Queens, the hole card is the King, the board is Queen, Queen, Jack, King!" He stared intently at Jiang Wenxi.
All eyes were focused on Jiang Wenxi's last card.
Facing Qiao Jie's piercing gaze, Jiang Wenxi slowly, almost with an elegant sense of ritual, picked up the edge of the trump card with two fingers.
Then, gently flip it over.
Ace of Spades.
The cards are lying face down on the table: face up: 10 of hearts, 10 of diamonds, and Ace of clubs; hole up: Ace of spades.
Three Aces, with a pair of 10s.
"Three A's," Jiang Wenxi said calmly, as if stating a simple fact. "It seems that Lady Luck is still on the side of honest people today."
The color drained from Qiao Jie's face instantly. He stared intently at the two Aces, then abruptly looked at Jiang Wenxi, his eyes filled with disbelief and a sudden surge of suspicion. How could she... how dare she... did she know from the very beginning?
Jiang Wenxi stopped looking at him and turned to Ma Yun, who was standing there stunned. She said clearly, "Ma Yun, do the math. Take back what Young Master Qiao lost, along with the eight million you 'lost' before. Also," she glanced at Qiao Jie's pale face and the sudden tension in her assistant's body, "tell Young Master Qiao a message for me."
She paused, then spoke each word clearly and distinctly:
"The gambling table is like life; if the foundation is not solid, the building will collapse quickly. Next time you want to play, remember to clear away any 'excess' things first."
Having said that, she ignored the deathly silence across the card table, stood up, smoothed out non-existent wrinkles on her skirt, and turned to leave. The crisp, steady sound of her high heels clicking on the floor faded into the distance, leaving behind only an unbelievable silence and Qiao Jie's ashen face, as if he had been slapped hard by an invisible hand.
Under the dazzling crystal chandeliers of the card room, the open deck of cards, the one that would decide the outcome, lay silently on the green velvet table, like evidence in a silent trial. And in Jiang Wenxi's mind, that cold, mechanical voice echoed once more:
After saying that, the group prepared to leave.
The aftershocks of the all-in game hadn't subsided, and the crisp sound of chips being handed over was particularly jarring in the silent card room. Qiao Jie stared at the chips being taken away; they weren't just money, but also the reputation he'd built up over years in this place. A burning resentment surged to his head, burning away the last shred of his reason.
"Wait!" Qiao Jie's voice was a little hoarse, but unusually loud. He stood up abruptly, the chair legs scraping against the floor with a sharp sound. "Miss Jiang, luck in cards is unpredictable in one round. How about... another real game?"
Jiang Wenxi had just slightly turned her body when she heard this, so she stopped and slowly turned back. Her face showed no surprise, only a knowing indifference: "Oh? What else does Young Master Qiao want to play?"
"Let's play the simplest, and most exciting one!" Qiao Jie's eyes were bloodshot, like a gambler who had lost desperately. In reality, he was calculating rapidly in his mind. The simplest game was the least likely to be rigged, and also the easiest... for some "accidents" to happen. "One hand to decide the winner, bet on big or small! I'll be the banker!" He almost shouted, pointing to a bright green velvet gambling table next to him, specially prepared for dice.
"Okay." Jiang Wenxi walked back to the edge of the stage, her demeanor still composed. "What's the stake?"
Qiao Jie, panting heavily, pulled a document from his inner pocket and slammed it on the table: "My 51% controlling stake in the 'Brilliant Galaxy' club is valued at no less than fifty million!" He stared intently at Jiang Wenxi, "Ms. Jiang, what you just won, plus Ma Yun's eight million, and everything you have that can be used as collateral, do you dare to bet against me this time?"
This was almost a desperate, mad gamble. Ma Yun's expression changed drastically, and she tried to dissuade him: "Wenxi, don't..."
Jiang Wenxi raised her hand to stop him. Her gaze fell on the documents, then she looked up at Qiao Jie's bloodshot eyes, which couldn't hide a hint of cunning deep within. "Okay," she uttered softly, pushing all the chips she had just won, along with her black card, onto the center of the table. "I'll bet with you."
Qiao Jie lost all reason upon seeing the black card; if he won this round, he would gain far more.
"That's great!" Qiao Jie grabbed the crystal dice cup, a look of mixed ferocity and excitement spreading across his face. He shook it with flamboyant movements, the three dice clattering violently inside the sealed cup, producing a jarring clatter. His movements were exaggerated, almost theatrical, culminating in a "bang" as he slammed the cup onto the green velvet table, his hand firmly gripping the top.
