Haikyuu!!: Can a reclusive genius fall in love?

Chapter 12 The Return of the King and the Reversal

The referee's whistle was like a whip cracking in the air, crisp and cold. The scoreboard showed a glaring 24:18, with Karasuno holding match point, and victory in the second set seemed to be theirs for the taking. The faces of the Aoki players were filled with resentment and helplessness, each breath heavy as if wrapped in soaked cotton.

In this suffocating low point, the figure everyone had been waiting for appeared at the players' tunnel entrance.

Oikawa Toru no longer used crutches; his right ankle had clearly passed the follow-up examination, but a subtle caution was still evident in his gait. His usual carefree smile was gone, replaced by a calm, almost sharp focus. Without hesitation, he walked straight to the coach's bench and nodded to Coach Irihata.

"Coach, I'm ready."

Coach Irihata gave him a deep look, and without any further words, decisively made the substitution gesture.

"Aoba Castle West makes a substitution! Number 1, Oikawa Tetsu, replaces Number 6, Yakinibu Shuu!"

The moment the announcement came over the loudspeaker, the entire Qingcheng Gymnasium seemed to come alive. The deathly silence was shattered, and the stands erupted in unbelievable cheers and applause!

"Oikawa-senpai!"

"Oikawa! It's Oikawa!"

"He's finally back!"

The Aoki team members on the field suddenly raised their heads, their eyes almost gleaming. Iwazumi exhaled a deep breath, his clenched fist slightly loosening. Even Kunimi Hide, who usually had little expression, brightened up a bit.

Oikawa Tetsu jogged onto the field, his steps not as light and bouncy as usual, but each step was steady and firm. He raised his hand to give a high-five to each of his teammates as he passed by.

"Sorry everyone, Lord Oikawa is a little late." His voice carried a smile, yet possessed an undeniable power. "Iwa-chan, don't look so scary."

"Stop talking nonsense, trash Kawa! Are you sure your foot is okay?" Iwaizumi frowned, his tone fierce, but his eyes were full of concern.

"Of course~ Oikawa-sama is in such good form he could go straight to the national tournament!" Oikawa Tetsu smiled and winked, then his gaze swept over all the teammates who had gathered around him. His smile faded slightly, and he became incredibly serious and sincere. "Listen, everyone."

He paused, his brown eyes, like warm amber, slowly and clearly looking at everyone.

"Today, I also believe in everyone."

These words seemed to possess a magical power, instantly smoothing away all the unease and anxiety, and a solid, surging sense of strength returned to the team.

"Oh, oh, oh! That sounds so nice!" Matsukawa Kazushige laughed first, instantly easing the atmosphere. "What if you make a mistake serving, Oikawa-sama?" Hanamaki Takahiro teased, a sly glint in his eyes. "Then you'll just have to treat me to ramen as an apology, right?" Kindaichi Yutaro replied憨憨地, swallowing unconsciously. "I want char siu and a soft-boiled egg!" Kunimi Hide lazily raised his hand, as if he could already see the menu. "Hey! You guys!" Oikawa Tetsu immediately exclaimed dramatically, feigning heartache, "Is this how you treat your captain who's just recovered from injury? Oikawa-sama can only afford the cheapest soy sauce ramen!" "Stingy!!!" Everyone laughed and cursed in unison.

The brief joke dispelled the last vestiges of gloom, and the familiar cohesion and fighting spirit of Aoba Castle West finally returned. Oikawa Tetsu's gaze finally settled on Yukimura Tsukihiro, who had remained silent all along.

"Yuki-chan," he smiled, extending his hand to him, "Ready to catch Oikawa-sama's pass?"

Yukimura Tsukishiro looked at the hand reaching out to him, then at Oikawa Tetsuya's strikingly bright eyes, took a soft breath, and then raised his hand to give him a high five. The pressure was light, yet it carried a solemn promise.

"Um."

Oikawa Tetsu finally stood at position one—the serve position. All eyes in the stadium were on him. The Karasuno players were on high alert, unaware of the deadly weapon that this returning setter's serve would be.

Oikawa Tetsu gently bounced the ball, feeling the leather against his skin, his eyes unusually calm. He slightly moved his right ankle to check the feel. Then, he took a deep breath, and his entire aura instantly changed, like a fully drawn bowstring, ready to be released.

He tossed the ball, took a running start—his stride was slightly slower than usual due to his foot injury, but the rhythm remained perfectly fluid. His core strength exploded, and he pushed off the ground to stand up! His arm swing was crisp and clean, with a pleasingly violent aesthetic!

boom! ! !

The volleyball, like a cannonball, carried astonishing momentum and spin, hurtling straight into Karasuno's backcourt with an extremely tricky trajectory! Its speed was so fast that it almost left a blur, and its angle was precisely aimed at the junction between the receiving players!

Karasuno's backcourt player's pupils contracted, and he desperately lunged to the side, but the ball's power and spin far exceeded expectations. It slammed heavily against the edge of his arm and was not completely controlled, but bounced out of bounds!

"Beep—!" "Serve directly to score! Aoba Johsai, 19-24!"

"Whoaaaaaah!!!" The entire arena erupted! An ace!

Oikawa Tetsu clenched his fist, a confident smile spreading across his face, and turned to wink at his teammates. Aoki's morale instantly soared to its peak!

"Next!" Oikawa Tetsu picked up the ball again without any hesitation.

The second serve was still powerful and heavy, heading straight for the baseline! Karasuno's backcourt was in a flurry of activity, barely managing to get the ball up, but the first pass was inaccurate, and their offensive organization was completely disrupted. The hasty spike was blocked by a double block formed by Iwaizumi and Matsukawa!

"Thump!!" "West of Aoba Castle, 20-24!"

"One more goal!" Oikawa Tetsu's voice carried a hint of laughter, yet it sounded like the pronouncement of death.

The third ball! The fourth ball! The fifth ball! Each serve was like a heavy hammer, slamming into Karasuno's defense and shattering their efforts to stabilize their position! The perfect power, angle, and spin, coupled with the immense psychological pressure brought by the return of the champions, brought Karasuno's first pass system to the brink of collapse!

They rallied to score four straight points! 24-22!

The entire stadium went wild! The cheers from Qingcheng were so loud they almost lifted the roof off!

Oikawa Tetsu received the sixth ball. The arena fell silent; everyone held their breath. He stood in the service area, exhaling softly, his eyes sharp as an eagle's.

Run-up, jump, swing your arms—!

This time, the ball seemed to be moving faster and spinning more violently, like a precision-guided missile, heading straight for Karasuno's weakest corner!

Karasuno's players tried their best to chase, but could only watch helplessly as the ball slammed heavily inside the baseline and then spun violently away!

"Beep beep—!!!" "Serve directly for a point! 25-24! Aoba Johsai takes the lead!"

"It's reversed!?!?!" Incredulous exclamations erupted.

Oikawa Tetsu didn't stop; he didn't even celebrate. He simply walked quickly to the service area and picked up the seventh ball. His eyes said it all—he was going to end the match.

Karasuno called a timeout, but clearly couldn't break the terrifying rhythm of the serve.

After the timeout, Oikawa Tetsu stepped back to the service line. The entire stadium fell silent.

Throwing the ball, pushing off the ground, swinging the arm—the movements are executed in one smooth motion, as perfect as art!

The volleyball whistled past, this time heading straight for Daichi Sawamura's arm as he prepared to receive the first pass!

"Tentacle out of bounds!!" The referee's whistle and verdict finally rang out!

"Match ended! In the second game, Aoba Josai won, 26-24!"

boom!!!!!!!!!!

A miraculous comeback! Oikawa Toru single-handedly crushed his opponent with seven consecutive serves!

The Qingcheng team members rushed onto the field and surrounded their hero, excitedly patting him on the shoulders and back.

"Damn it, Oikawa! Well done!" "Oikawa-senpai! You're a god!" "Ramen! It's a deal! I want the special chashu!" "With bamboo shoots! And two soft-boiled eggs!"

Surrounded by his teammates, Oikawa Tetsu finally managed a slightly exhausted smile. He rubbed his right shoulder, which he had strained too much, and complained with a laugh, "Ouch~ that hurts! You guys, all you do is eat! Iwa-chan, you need to do something about them! Oikawa-sama's wallet is crying!"

Iwaizumi stood on the outside with his arms crossed, a barely suppressed smile on his face, and snorted, "Serves you right."

Oikawa Tetsu's gaze swept past the cheering crowd and landed once more on the quiet, white-haired boy. Tsukishiro was also looking at him, her icy green eyes gleaming with a complex light—a light filled with shock, admiration, and a hint of something indescribable…longing.

Oikawa Tetsu gave him a bright smile, more dazzling than ever before.

"Did you see that, Yuki-chan?" he mouthed silently.
