Haikyuu!!: Can a reclusive genius fall in love?
Chapter 14 Review and Extra Practice
"Line up!"
Both teams, their bodies weary yet still tense, stood in two neat rows at the net. Sweat dripped from their chins, splashing onto the smooth floor.
"Thank you for your guidance!" The unified shouts echoed through the stadium, carrying the complex emotions unique to the end of a game—the composure of the winner and the resentment of the loser.
After a brief greeting, Karasuno's team did not linger. Under the steady leadership of their captain, Daichi Sawamura, they quickly began packing up their equipment and preparing to leave.
Kageyama Tobio's gaze swept over Aoki's side, lingering briefly on Oikawa Toru and Yukimura Tsukishiro, his eyes carrying a barely perceptible desire for stronger opponents. Hyuga Shoyo, on the other hand, seemed to be still full of energy, helping to collect the ball while excitedly talking to Yamaguchi Tadashi beside him, his occasional glances at Yukimura Tsukishiro filled with pure curiosity and a desire for challenge.
The setting sun cast its golden rays through the high windows of the gymnasium, turning the dust motes floating inside golden. However, the atmosphere at the Qingcheng Volleyball Club after the practice match wasn't as relaxed and enthusiastic as one would expect after a victory. Although they ultimately won in a comeback, the problems exposed during the process were equally clear.
Yukimura Tsukihiro stood a little distance from the crowd, his head slightly bowed, his damp white hair clinging to his forehead and cheeks. He looked at his palms, slightly red from numerous powerful spikes and saves, still tingling with a numb sensation. His emerald eyes churned with complex emotions. The bitterness of defeat was clear, but even clearer was the completely different experience of the third set—the exhilarating feeling of being precisely guided, completely trusted, and able to unleash all his strength without reservation. These two contrasting feelings intertwined within him, leaving him momentarily silent.
"Alright, stop looking so gloomy." Oikawa Tetsu's voice broke the silence. He clapped his hands, and his usual smile, which seemed to dispel all gloom, returned to his face. "It was just a practice match. To play like this without Oikawa-sama is already quite impressive, and we still won in the end, didn't we? Right, Iwa-chan?"
He deliberately nudged Iwaizumi next to him with his elbow.
Iwaizumi glared at him, annoyed, but still spoke up, his voice as firm as ever: "Although we lost the first game, the problems that were exposed are more important than winning a game." His sharp gaze swept over all the team members, "Especially teamwork and communication! Go back and do a thorough review!"
"Yes!" the team members responded in unison, their spirits lifted considerably.
"However," Iwaizumi paused, his gaze lingering on Tsukishiro for a moment, "you played well in the last game."
This is already the highest level of recognition that Iwaizumi Kazunari can give.
Oikawa Tetsu grinned and moved closer to Tsukishiro, putting his arm around his shoulder. He felt Tsukishiro stiffen for a moment, but quickly relax. "Did you hear that, Yuki-chan? Even Iwa-chan said you played pretty well~ Okay, let's go listen to Coach Irihata's debriefing."
Yuebai was swayed slightly by him and nodded gently: "...Mm."
The team members sat around the sidelines, listening to Coach Irihata's post-match review. The coach's face didn't show much joy; his tone was calm but carried an undeniable weight. The whiteboard was covered with tactical diagrams and hastily written notes from the match.
"Although we won, the problems exposed are still obvious, especially in teamwork. Communication at crucial moments is still not smooth enough." The coach pointed heavily at the word "communication" with his pen, his eyes sweeping over everyone present. "The offensive lines sometimes overlapped, the defensive rotations were not decisive enough, and the intention and timing of the screens could have been better... These are not things that can be covered up by individual ability alone."
His gaze lingered on several key points before finally settling on the silent, white-haired boy.
"Xuecun," the coach called out, "Your talent is excellent, but volleyball is a team sport. You need to be more proactive in integrating into this system, understand?"
Yukimura Tsukihiro sat at the edge of the crowd, his head slightly lowered. Hearing his name called, he raised his eyes, his emerald pupils meeting the whiteboard before quickly lowering again. He nodded almost imperceptibly, letting out a barely audible murmur: "...Mm."
He silently memorized every word his coach said. Those terms about positioning, screening, timing, and trust were like pebbles thrown into a still lake, creating ripples that spread outwards. His hands, resting on his knees, unconsciously tightened.
After the debriefing, the team members dispersed to do relaxation exercises or prepare to go home. Yukimura Tsukishiro quietly put the equipment away, his movements meticulous. As Oikawa Tetsu walked past Yukimura Tsukishiro, he smiled and patted him on the shoulder: "Don't worry about it too much, Yuki-chan. Iwa-chan and the coach just like to scare people~ Next time, Oikawa-sama will pass you an even better ball!"
Yukimura Tsukishiro did not answer, but simply nodded slightly again.
"However," Oikawa Tetsu's tone became slightly more serious as he turned to face him, his brown eyes holding a rare, pure sense of guidance, "it's not enough to just have Oikawa-sama's perfect passes. Little One and Little Tobi... I hate to admit it, but they really taught us a good lesson, didn't they?"
He pointed to the Karasuno team that was leaving the field.
"Did you see that?" Oikawa Tetsu's voice wasn't loud, but it clearly reached Tsukishiro's ears. "They barely communicated beforehand. But the little guy could hit every ball Tobihiro gave him with his eyes closed. Trust isn't just talk, Yuki-chan."
He pointed to his eyes, then to his ears: "Use this and this to sense your teammates' positions and predict the ball's trajectory. Sometimes, a glance or a gesture is more effective than shouting yourself hoarse."
Tsukishiro listened intently, her icy green eyes fixed on Oikawa Toru. Iwaizumi Hajime might have said these words before, but hearing them from Oikawa Toru's mouth, combined with his personal experience on the field just now, seemed to carry a different weight.
"Of course!" Oikawa Tetsu suddenly regained his smug look, hands on his hips. "You're still a long way from reaching Oikawa-sama's level of understanding all attackers' thoughts~ But it's okay, Oikawa-sama will teach you properly!"
"Hey, trash Kawa, stop bragging and come help clean up!" Iwaizumi's shout came from not far away.
"Here she comes~ Iwa-chan, really, she's not cute at all..."
"Huh? What are you saying over there?!"
Oikawa Tetsu ran off while complaining, leaving Tsukishiro standing alone in the same spot.
He looked at his palm again, then slowly clenched it.
Trust...?
He raised his eyes, his gaze sweeping over Watari Chikaji, who was diligently wiping the floor; Hanamaki, who was discussing blocking opportunities with Matsukawa; Yakinibu Hide, who was silently practicing his serve; and the two first-year students, Kindaichi and Kunimi, who, though exhausted, were still encouraging each other.
Finally, his gaze fell on Toru Oikawa, who was helping to move equipment while being yelled at by Iwaizumi.
These are his... teammates.
A defeat, a powerful challenge from the crow, was like a heavy hammer blow, shattering some of the hard shell that encased him, allowing something new to peek through the cracks and quietly grow.
He knew he was strong. But he also began to understand that to become even stronger, he needed to learn how to build deeper connections with the people around him.
Night quietly descended.
The empty Qingcheng Gymnasium lit up again, a single lamp casting a faint halo in the center of the vast stadium. Xuecun Yuebai returned, having changed into clean training clothes, though his scalp was still slightly damp.
He stood in the service area, tossing the ball up, running up, jumping, and swinging his arm again and again. The resounding thuds of the ball echoed repeatedly in the silent arena, sounding exceptionally clear and persistent.
He practiced more than just serves. More often, he was repeating the spikes and adjusting his attacking movements that felt awkward during the day's matches. He would suddenly pause, frown and think for a moment, then try again, adjusting his footwork, the timing of his jump, and the angle of his arm swing.
It's like competing with yourself, trying to thoroughly digest and absorb all the information you received during the day and the slight sluggishness your body felt through countless monotonous repetitions.
Unbeknownst to him, a figure was standing in the shadows at the entrance of the stadium, leaning against the door frame.
Oikawa Tetsu returned sometime later. He wasn't wearing his gym uniform, just his school uniform jacket, his hands in his pockets, quietly watching the white figure on the field jumping and swinging his arms again and again. The warm yellow light outlined the focused and serious profile of Yukimura Tsukihiro's face, and sweat once again soaked his hair.
Oikawa Tetsu's face was devoid of its usual playful expression; his brown eyes held a rare, calm observation. He watched Yukimura Tsukishiro repeat and fine-tune the process time and time again, observing his almost clumsy persistence and silent effort.
He didn't make a sound to disturb them, nor did he step into the halo of light. He simply remained quietly in the shadows, like a silent guardian, or rather, a patient observer.
After an unknown amount of time, Yukimura Tsukihiro's movements gradually slowed down, his breathing became increasingly rapid, and finally he stopped. He rested his hands on his knees, lowered his head and breathed heavily for a while, then straightened up, wiped his face and neck with a towel, and began to pick up the volleyballs scattered on the floor.
He didn't see the figure at the door, packed his things, turned off the lights in the venue, and disappeared into the night.
The footsteps gradually faded away until they disappeared.
After a while, Oikawa Tetsu slowly emerged from the shadows and strolled to the place where Yukimura Tsukishiro had practiced. The venue was dark, with only moonlight streaming through the high windows.
He crouched down, his long, slender fingers gently touching the polished floor, as if he could still feel the vibrations left by the countless jumps and landings. Then, his fingers touched a volleyball that had been left behind in the corner.
He picked up the ball, held it in his palm, and unconsciously rubbed the leather surface with his fingertips, where the warmth and sweat of the practitioner's hands seemed to still linger.
In the darkness, Oikawa Tetsu's lips curved into a barely perceptible smile as he murmured to himself, his tone carrying a hint of barely perceptible anticipation and amusement.
"What an... wonderfully well-behaved child."
