Chapter 268 A Chance Encounter Leads to Friendship: The X-Men's On-Site Surrender
"Charles, we've lost."
Magneto spoke in a deep voice.
"It's not decided yet, old friend."
Charles wiped the blood from his nose and looked at Vision with a complicated expression.
Vision did not pursue, nor did he adopt any attack stance.
He simply stood quietly in place, the Mind Gem on his forehead emitting a gentle golden glow.
"Mr. Xavier," Vision spoke, his tone flat and devoid of any emotion.
"You want to access our memories to determine their authenticity, right?"
Charles was slightly taken aback.
"I will proactively open my mental link with you," Vision said.
"The Mind Stone records information left over from every corner of this building, including what they did across countless timelines."
Charles's pupils contracted sharply.
"Professor, don't listen to him! This is a trap!" Cyclops shouted.
"Shut up, Scott," Charles interrupted his most trusted student, a rare occurrence for him.
He stared at Vision for a full three seconds, then closed his eyes.
The mental energy extended out again, and this time there was no resistance.
The Mind Stone on Vision's forehead actively established a bridge with Charles's consciousness.
A deluge of information poured in.
It's not words, not language, but images.
Countless beings across timelines were reduced to ashes by TVA's editing tools.
In one universe, mutants have just established their home, when the entire timeline is wiped out by a reset bomb.
In another universe, a group of children are running on a school playground. An orange light sweeps across the field, leaving only empty swings swaying in the wind.
There is another universe where a bald old man in a wheelchair is smiling at a group of young mutants.
That face was exactly like Charles's.
Then the screen shattered, and that universe was marked as "off-timeline". Execution result: Reset.
Charles's body began to tremble violently.
"Professor!" Storm landed from mid-air, anxiously grabbing the armrest of the wheelchair.
Charles opened his eyes again, but the previous scrutiny and calmness were gone, replaced by anger.
"Eric." Charles's voice trembled, but not from weakness.
"They are slaughtering people from all timelines!"
Magneto froze.
"It wasn't trimming, it wasn't maintenance." Charles turned his wheelchair around, staring intently at the remaining people on the second-floor platform. "It was a massacre."
"Tens of thousands of universes were deemed to be off track, and then the entire timeline, along with all life on it, was erased."
"Including mutants, including our schools, including children who have just learned to control their abilities."
Charles's voice grew louder and louder.
"On some timelines, you established Kenosha, and mutants finally had their own nation."
"Then TVA came, a bomb, and everything was gone."
Magneto's expression changed completely at that moment.
A murderous intent appeared on his already weary face.
He experienced concentration camps and witnessed his people being sent to incinerators.
He spent his entire life fighting against humans who tried to exterminate mutants.
Now, someone is telling him that there exists an organization that transcends all universes and is carrying out systematic genocide against mutants across countless timelines.
"So, which side are you on?"
Magneto turned around and faced the person who had been left behind.
"That's taking things out of context!" the survivor retorted sharply. "The existence of those timelines would lead to the collapse of the multiverse! I'm saving more lives!"
"You call this salvation?"
Wolverine put away his claws, not because he gave up the fight, but because he changed his target.
Logan turned around, his back to Steve, facing the remaining people.
The veins on his neck bulged, and his teeth were grinding together.
"I've seen plenty of scum in my life," Logan said in a hoarse, rough voice, "but you're the first one to make killing sound so noble."
"Logan! What are you doing!" Cyclops exclaimed.
"Shut up, one-eyed man." Logan said without turning his head.
"Use your brain! If these lunatics in tight suits really wanted to destroy the universe, wouldn't that be easy? Why waste time attacking here?"
Cyclops opened his mouth, then was momentarily speechless.
He looked back at the TVA lobby, now a mess, and then at the TVA agents who had been knocked down by the Avengers but hadn't been killed.
If these people are truly destroyers, why show them mercy?
Storm descended slowly from mid-air and stood beside Charles. Her white hair fluttered in the remaining air currents, and her eyes had returned to their normal color.
"Professor, I trust your judgment."
Colossus rubbed the crack on his chest that Frank had punched him in, remained silent for a few seconds, and then strode over to the Avengers' side.
His metal feet stomped on the ruins with a dull thud.
Laser Eye looked around and noticed that his teammates were turning around one by one.
"Damn it," he cursed, removing his fingers from the side of his glasses and turning to face the person left behind.
"If the professor says you are slaughtering innocent people, then you are slaughtering innocent people."
The faces of those who remained were ashen.
"Superheroes' damn compassion!"
He practically spat out those words through gritted teeth.
"You have no idea what I'm doing! Maintaining the sacred timeline is the most important thing!"
The person left behind smashed the railing, scattering fragments everywhere.
"Without me, the multiverse would face endless war! Countless versions of me would be born from every branching timeline!"
"They won't choose order like I have! They'll kill each other, they'll devour each other's universes!"
"I am the only one willing to sit down and maintain peace! Killing me will only bring more fanatical conquerors!"
There was a two-second silence in the hall.
"So you mean..." Tony, carrying the steel hammer, stepped forward.
"Because your other versions might cause trouble, does that give you the right to format all disobedient timelines?"
"This is not a right! This is a responsibility!" the survivor roared.
"Ha." Tony laughed.
There was no mockery, no ridicule, not even anger in that smile.
"You know, I was locked in a cave for three months," Tony said calmly. "Back then, I felt like I had no choice, like my fate was already written in my head."
"But I chose to stand up on my own."
Tony raised the steel hammer, its tip pointing at the man left behind.
"You say the world will descend into chaos without you? Then let it be chaotic."
"I still prefer to take my destiny into my own hands, even if it means shedding blood and tears!"
"At least it was my own choice!"
