Divine punishment?

Jiang Yan frowned as he looked at the 'residents' yelling at him from the lower floors of the tower: "So these people turned into sea zombies? Then how come you're alright?"

Ellie shook her head, saying painfully, "The divine punishment doesn't directly turn the residents into sea zombies; it's a high tide that occurs every three days!"

She told Jiang Yan that when the tide comes in, the entire island will be submerged by seawater, and the town's residents must rely on boats to avoid being swallowed by the sea.

At first, they could keep going, but after a while, they couldn't.

The trees on the island died quickly because they were constantly being submerged by seawater. Without trees, it was impossible to repair damaged ships.

Over the years, the number of boats on the island dwindled, and residents fought each other over a spot on board, eventually resulting in a death.

But that wasn't the end of it. After being soaked in seawater, the dead resident turned into a sea zombie!

"The sea zombies retained their consciousness from their previous lives and were unaware of their own death, so they didn't harm anyone," Ellie whispered. "Back then, the townspeople argued fiercely about what to do with the sea zombies. Some suggested killing them, others suggested imprisoning them, since no one knew if they would become a sea zombie in the future... In the end, as you can see, the town built this tower to imprison the sea zombies here."

The sea zombies, still possessing consciousness from their previous lives… Jiang Yan looked at the sea zombies on the tower with some surprise. Sure enough, he found that these guys had rich expressions and colorful language. Several hot-tempered ones even cursed Jiang Yan for not going over to pick them up.

Ignoring the trolls, Jiang Yan looked up at Ellie and asked, "So you're the only living person in town right now?"

Ellie nodded: "Yes, I'm the only one left. If you hadn't come, I probably wouldn't have been able to hold on much longer."

Jiang Yan was about to ask another question when he discovered that the luxury ship beneath his feet was rapidly retreating.

He paused for a moment before realizing that the tide had gone out!

To avoid running aground, Jiang Yan quickly turned the boat around and steered it away.

A few minutes later, the tide receded, revealing a small island.

There were indeed no trees on the island, nor any insects, snakes, birds, or beasts; it was as silent as the end of the world.

Only from the direction of the tower came faint, mournful sounds, like the wailing of ghosts and howls of wolves.

"This shouldn't be Mermaid Town, right?" Jiang Yan frowned as he docked the boat at a place that resembled a pier, and then stepped onto the island.

Because the tide had just receded, the island was wet everywhere and smelled of the sea.

After walking for more than ten minutes, Jiang Yan finally arrived at the ruins of Xuri Town. Most of the buildings here had been rotten by the sea, and most of the remaining ones had collapsed. Jiang Yan looked inside a few times and found no trace of any living people.

Further ahead is the tall tower where the sea zombies were imprisoned.

As Jiang Yan walked over, Ellie was leaping gracefully from the top of the tower.

boom!!

Ellie landed on her feet, leaving two huge dents in the ground.

Jiang Yan looked over and found that the two dents were obviously not recent; the cracks on them were dense, and it was unknown how many times Ellie had stepped on them.

"I'm sorry to have made you laugh." Ellie scratched her head a little embarrassedly, her biceps bulging, showing off muscles that would make Jiang Yan blush!

Then she asked, "By the way, I still don't know your name."

"My name is Jiang Taigong." Jiang Yan went straight to the point and asked, "Ellie, do you know about Mermaid Town?"

"Mermaid Town?" Ellie scratched her head. "I think I've heard my mother mention it..."

Finally, there's a clue... Jiang Yan was overjoyed, looking at her expectantly, and said, "Then think about it quickly!"

Ellie's mind seemed a bit foggy; after thinking for a while, she finally remembered: "I remember now! My mother said there's a kind of conch in the sea called the Sea King Conch! If you blow it, it will attract a lot of mermaids!"

"Uh..." Jiang Yan was a little confused: "What does this have to do with Mermaid Town?"

Ellie gave him a look that said, "You big idiot!" and said, "Wherever you blow the conch shell, that's where Mermaid Town is!"

No way?

Mermaid Town isn't actually a fixed town?

Where am I supposed to find this...?

and many more!

Blowing the conch shell?

Jiang Yan's heart skipped a beat: Then all I need to do is find out which coastal place had the sound of conch shells during the year the steward traveled, wouldn't that be enough?

Jiang Yan was overjoyed: "Ellie, you've helped me a lot, thank you so much!"

If the other person hadn't been so burly and had such bold features, Jiang Yan would have loved to go up and give him a kiss!

"I helped you, so shouldn't you do me a favor too?" Ellie asked cautiously.

"Shall I take you back to the Siren City?" Jiang Yan asked.

Ellie nodded repeatedly: "Yes, we can't stay here any longer, or I'll turn into a sea zombie too. Please."

"No problem, but I need to explore this place first," Jiang Yan said.

As the Sunrise Island continued to drift, Jiang Yan sensed something strange beneath it, perhaps even an opportunity.

Ellie, however, refused to go down no matter what, and even tried to dissuade Jiang Yan from taking the risk: "If you anger the sea god, you might turn into a sea zombie too."

"Don't worry." Jiang Yanyi was bold and daring, and with the help of the shikigami - the scapegoat and the golden [return scroll], he was not afraid of danger.

Afterwards, Jiang Yan and Ellie went to the beach.

"Wait for me here." Jiang Yan cast a lightning shield on himself and jumped into the sea.

The water-repelling bead in the backpack immediately emitted a hazy glow, repelling the seawater.

After entering the sea, Jiang Yan did not immediately dive down. Instead, he looked at Ellie above him from the water. Seeing that she did not steal the boat, Jiang Yan turned around and dived down.

"What is this?" As he continued to descend, Jiang Yan noticed that the bedrock beneath Sunrise Island was rather strange, looking somewhat like plastic.

He reached out and gently touched it; it felt hard, yet somewhat slippery, as if the bedrock was secreting something.

"Could it be alive?"

Jiang Yan's heart skipped a beat. After moving slightly away, he continued to descend, while scanning his surroundings with his Golden Eye, trying to find any hidden information.

After diving for about twenty minutes, Jiang Yan discovered that the bedrock of Xuri Island had reached the bottom, and below that was a bottomless, pitch-black sea.

Jiang Yan only glanced at it, but felt his mind being drawn away, and quickly grabbed the bedrock beside him.

"This island is floating in the sea, no wonder it drifts." Jiang Yan withdrew his gaze and began to circle around the bedrock.

"Huh, what's that...?" Jiang Yan discovered a cave three meters long and wide in the bedrock facing west.

The cave was pitch black, with black water gurgling out. As Jiang Yan approached, he received a system notification:

[Ding! Player has been infected!]

Is this black water poisonous?

Jiang Yan opened the status bar and found that the poison did not seem to cause any damage, nor did it reduce his defense, speed, or magic attack. However, Jiang Yan did not dare to be careless and quickly took out a mid-level antidote pill and swallowed it.

After confirming the antidote, Jiang Yanxin steeled himself, took out the Water-Repelling Bead from his backpack, and swam into the cave with the help of the light emitted by the Water-Repelling Bead.
